Gorge Wind Forecast

In a really fabulous twist, the GFS has drastically downgraded today’s wind from yesterday’s forecast. I’m sure that most of you are as delighted as I am, as less wind means less fire spread. I’m guessing the size of the fire is also having an impact on the weather and gradient, so I’m not expecting all that much accuracy today.

We have a .06 westerly gradient (pdx-dls) to start the day and single digit to teens on the river. We’ll have 12-15 out of the west this morning between Viento and Swell with 5-10 near Cascade Locks and Mosier to The Dalles. The wind will hang out in that range for the morning, picking up to 22-25 this afternoon between Cascade Locks and Arlington. That said, the atmosphere looks unstable this afternoon, so let’s downgrade that to 17-22.

Friday starts off with a very saturated atmosphere and a good chance of marine clouds as far east as Hood River. Once again, the wind will probably be impacted by the fire. That said, we’re looking at 12-15 Cascade Locks to Hood River and 22-25 Mosier to Arlington to start the day. It looks like the western Gorge will stay cloudy with 15-18 in the afternoon, maybe a bit more, with 25-29 between Viento and Rufus. Although that may sound scary for the fire, dewpoints in the upper 50’s to low 60’s (50% humidity) will help a lot.

Saturday currently looks cloudy with 10-13 in the western gorge in the morning with 13-16 east of Hood River. As a front moves in later in the day, we’ll see the wind pick up to 23-26 in the afternoon between Cascade Locks and Rufus. The GFS suggests this front with saturdate the air column, bringing a chance of sprinkles and high humidity. Sunday looks like light westerlies early and light easterlies in the afternoon and Monday looks like E 15-20.

Random Morning Thoughts

I put on my N95 mask last night and took my bike down to the waterfront. I don’t recommend you do that when the air quality monitor is reading 422. Anyway, it was eerie: nobody out. Oppressive mood. Dark. Smoky. It seems that everyone is hunkering down at home, breathing filtered air and packing valuables.

The wind forecast for today has been downgraded substantially, and the humidity forecast for the next three days is pretty impressive. Normally I’d be bummed about those two things. Today, I am thrilled. This points to the fact that our perspective is what causes us to like or dislike things, in the process creating pleasure or suffering.

Sure, there are situations that are truly horrible, bad, and sources of pain. That’s just an unfortunate reality. But we do have a choice of perspective for most of the mundane daily happenings. And our choice of perspective, good, bad, or just-plain-in-the-moment, creates more or less suffering in our lives.

This goes far beyond changing our thoughts. That’s superficial. It’s about developing the capacity for equanimity, accepting things as they are while still striving to make things better. Anyway, that’s all I have for today. I hope you are surviving the smoke and the worry. Have the most awesome day you possibly can, given the situation.

Gorge Weather Forecast

It’s a smoky morning, and given the radar image, I suspect we have high clouds above the smoke. Southerly flow brings a slight potential for thunder and/or sprinkles tonight. Temps will be near 70 early and in the mid 80’s this afternoon with high humidity and moderate west wind. Tomorrow looks even muggier with 50% relative humidty / dewpoints near 60 all day. Temps will be near 60 early and in the low 80’s later. Moderate wester wind. No rainbows. Saturday starts off near 60 and ends up in the mid to upper 70’s. Moderate west wind. No rainbows.

White Sprinter Van of the Week

Road and Mountain Biking

ATTENTION: Post Canyon and all other Hood River County lands (Pine Mont, Kingsley, etc.) and all county roads that access county forest (Riorden Hill, Kingsley, Post Canyon) are now CLOSED due to extreme fire danger and a lack of resources to fight any fires that might start. No biking. No hiking. No equestrianing. No nothinging. Please obey the closures – there will be sheriff patrols in place. Other closed lands include Kreps (Hospital Hill) and SDS (Whoopdee and Underwood). In addition, all forest lands east of Dee Highway and north of Mt. Hood’s peak are under a level one (get set!) evacuation order.

Upcoming Events

Tonight’s events include one for the first responders – instead of the usual shop rides at Dirty Fingers Bikes at 5:30, the shop will be serving up a free pint of beer to each firefighterwho shows up. Other events include by-donation yoga at Samadhi at 6 and Tai Chi at Our Savioir Church in Bingen at 6:30. There’s also a community fire meeting at Hood River Valley High at 6.

Just a reminder that all Hood River County forest lands and trails are closed to all users, along with all Kreps and SDS lands. There’s no fire or smoking allowed in the Gifford Pinchot forest until further notice. As of today, the Huckleberry Festival in Bingen is still on for the weekend, as is the Hood River Fly-In and the Aluminum Man triathlon. There’s a half-day meditation retreat at Yoga Samadhi from 1-5pm on Saturday.

Mt. Hood Snow Forecast

The Mt. Hood snow forecast is currently on vacation. It will stay on vacation until I deem it to be close enough to winter that we need a Mt. Hood snow forecast. Be safe out there on the snow this summer!

Have an awesome day today!
