Gorge Wind Forecast
In a nice twist, the wind forecast for today has backed off a bit, most likely because the surface thermal trough is taking its time shifting east of the Cascades. 5am gradients were a mere .04 (pdx-dls) and .00 (dls-psc). The gradient will increase during the day, causing the wind to pick up. A complicating factor in today’s forecast is the somewhat unstable atmosphere late in the day; that could cause the wind to be gusty, unreliable, rangy, and potentially less than models suggest.
So, let’s go with west wind at 5-8 for Dawn Patrol between Cascade Locks and Mosier. We’ll see a slow but steady build to 15-18 this afternoon between Cascade Locks and Hood River. After 5pm, as a trough of low pressure moves northward bringing cooler air to the west side, we’ll see the wind pick up to inconsistent 21-25 between Cascade Locks and The Dalles.
A trough of low pressure will sit over us on Thursday, bringing clouds to the western Gorge and an unstable atmosphere to areas east of Rowena. A weather impulse late in the day will potentially kick off some sprinkles in the western Gorge and thunderstorms to the eastern Gorge. With all that happening, the wind will be gusty and unreliable for windsports as well as firefighters. For now, it looks like we’ll have Dawn Patrol at 23-26 between Viento and Mosier (10-15 at Cascade Locks) with the wind picking up to gusty 25-29 between Cascade Locks and Rufus in the afternoon. If we see thunder, the wind will likely back off. Most consistent locations will probably be Stevenson, Avery, and the Maryhill grain elevators. Arlington could pick up to 20-24 Thursday afternoon.
Looking at Friday, we’ll have a weak weather system move through early. After that, high pressure will build off the coast. The disruption early in the day will likely impact wind steadiness for the entirety of the day; expect rangy, inconsistent westerlies. Models suggest we’ll start with 24-27 between Viento and The Dalles with 13-16 west and east of those locations. As the day goes on, the wind will build to rangy 25-30 between Cascade Locks and Avery with double-inconsistent wind near Swell. Saturday currently looks like west 14-17 to start and 20-24 in the afternoon.

Random Morning Thoughts
I’m not sure where this is going, but it’s on my mind… I was reflecting last night on how losses bring us together. When someone dies and our community is impacted, we form a web of support. When a natural disaster like the #eaglecreekfire happens, we talk openly about our feelings and our sense of grief and anger. I find that it feels good to experience this sense of connection despite the fact that it arises from pain.
This makes me wonder how we can connect in the same way when positive things happen. In some sense we do: graduations, weddings, the birth of a baby… but somehow these happy events don’t seem to evoke the same long-lasting web of connection that painful events do.
Perhaps part of it is that we assume people need support when they are hurting. And part of it is our cultural value of humility. But research shows that relaxing into positive feelings and savoring them has a positive impact on our neural networks.
I vote for longer-lasting celebration of good things. Let’s tell people how much we appreciate who they are and the things they’ve achieved. Let’s tell them we are proud. Let’s take them out to dinner, buy them cards, and keep the positive encouragement going, just as we keep up the support in tougher times. What have we got to lose? Celebrate the awesome. It’s going to be very smoky and ashy today as west wind brings “stuff” from the Eagle Creek fire this way. Temps will be in the mid 60’s early and low 90’s later. Moderate west wind. No rainbows. Chance of thunderstorms overnight. Thursday might see a few sprinkles and/or thunder early with smoke all day. Temps will be in the mid 60’s early and mid 80’s in the afternoon with high humidity. Moderate to strong west wind. No rainbows. Friday may see a few clouds early in Hood River, but that chance is diminishing. Temps will be in the low 60’s early and low 80’s in the afternoon. Strong west wind. No rainbows, although a smoky rainbow would be cool.

Road and Mountain Biking
ATTENTION: Post Canyon and all other Hood River County lands (Pine Mont, Kingsley, etc.) and all county roads that access county forest (Riorden Hill, Kingsley, Post Canyon) are now CLOSED due to extreme fire danger and a lack of resources to fight any fires that might start. No biking. No hiking. No equestrianing. No nothinging. Please obey the closures – there will be sheriff patrols in place. Other closed lands include Kreps (Hospital Hill) and SDS (Whoopdee and Underwood). In addition, all forest lands east of Dee Highway and north of Mt. Hood’s peak are under a level one (get set!) evacuation order.
Upcoming Events
Air quality this morning was 154, considered unhealthy for outdoor exercising. Just FYI, yo. Events tonight are ladies kite and windsurf night at the Event Site at 5. Ping Pong ($5) at the Hood River Armory at 5:30. Sailboat races at the Hood River Marina, Zumba at St. Francis House in Odell at 6, and Tai Chi at Our Savior Church in Bingen at 6:30.
Other fun things this weekend include the huckleberry festival in Bingen Friday through saturday. The Hood River Fly-in is this weekend at WAAAM, and The Dalles has the Aluminum Man triathlon on Saturday morning. There’s a Hood River County trail work party on the 130 and 133 this Saturday from 8 to 1. There’s a half-day meditation retreat at Yoga Samadhi on Saturday afternoon from 1 to 5.

Mt. Hood Snow Forecast
