Gorge Wind Forecast
First off, a few quick news bites that don’t fit into other sections: the Cross-Channel swim has been canceled, Indian Heaven Wilderness closed yesterday due to a brand-new 1000 acre wildfire, and the Eagle Creek fire (caused by kids with fireworks) was already at 3000 acres yesterday. Wind is not helpful for wildfires, and most unfortunately, we will have wind for the next few days.
This morning (Monday) started off with a light westerly gradient, but that will change as the heat low shifts over the Willamette Valley and high pressure builds in the desert. We’ll see the wind build by midday to E 20-25 near Cascade Locks with 15-20 near Viento and Rooster Rock.
The easterlies pick up overnight, giving us 20-25+ to start the day near Cascade Locks and Rooster Rock with 15-20 between Home Valley and Viento. This is better for fire control than the previous forecast of 30-35, but still not good. The wind will fade to E 10-15 in the afternoon and turn to W 10-13 between Cascade Locks and Hood River after 10pm.
Wednesday sees the heat low shift into the eastern desert in the afternoon, causing the west wind to pick up, especially late in the day. We’ll see W 12-15 for much of the day between Cascade Locks and Hood River. After 2pm, the wind will build to gusty 24-28 between Cascade Locks and The Dalles. We also have a good chance of thunderstorms on Wednesday afternoon and evening. With the unstable atmosphere, the wind will be gusty and unreliable.
The long range forecast suggests a cold front will approach on Thursday and move inland later in the day. This will drop high temps 15+ degrees and also bring some rain, clouds, and high humidity to the western Gorge starting in the morning. We’ll end up with west wind at 26-30+ east of the low clouds and 16-19 under the clouds.

Random Morning Thoughts
I’m looking out my window at the smoky air this morning and thinking about the underage kid who started the Eagle Creek Fire with fireworks. This has me contemplating the topic of forgiveness.
It’s a messy subject; we so often equate forgiveness with forgetfulness or acceptance or even condoning something that happened. For myself, I find compassion to be a more achievable goal than forgiveness, however it is defined.
Understanding what led someone to certain actions lowers my reactivity towards that person and gives me more peace. For example, I’m mad that a careless kid scared the crap out of 153 hikers, terrified residents of Cascade Locks and forced them from their homes, and scarred the beautiful Gorge forest for my lifetime (among other things). The impacts from this kid’s actions will last for a generation.
And… I’m trying to put myself in this kid’s shoes. They’re probably terrified and regretful and feeling guilty and ashamed. They too will be impacted for years by a few minutes of thoughtlessness. Starting a huge wildfire and impacting thousands of lives and damaging a national scenic resource and having to deal with the fallout is the sort of thing that can traumatize someone for life. This kid fucked up, and they are going to pay for it for a long time.
I guess what I’m saying this morning is that if you’re struggling to forgive someone for something, perhaps set that aside and go for the easier goal of compassion. Baby steps are often easier than going whole hog. Even making an attempt shows you are awesome. Have an awesome day.

Road and Mountain Biking
Heads up: Mosier is testing out some new bike-friendly intersections from today on through the 9th. They’d really appreciate it if you’d go check them out and provide feedback: cityofmosier.com/feedback. In other news, all Kreps and SDS lands remain closed due to fire danger. Dethman Ridge Road and Erchk Hill are both closed at their west ends due to bridge rebuilding. To the best of my knowledge, everything else is open. Hydrate!

Mt. Hood Snow Forecast
The Mt. Hood snow forecast is currently on vacation. It will stay on vacation until I deem it to be close enough to winter that we need a Mt. Hood snow forecast. Be safe out there on the snow this summer!
