Gorge Wind Forecast
This is your forecast for Monday and Tuesday. I’ll be back for you Wednesday morning, or perhaps even Tuesday evening. For Monday, we’ll see the heat low shift east of the Cascades during the afternoon, turning the wind slightly onshore. Timing will be everything, and models have been trending later with the move. So, we’ll have E 15-20 near Stevenson and Rooster Rock for the first half of the day. The wind will die off midday, and turn to west 5 or so late in the afternoon, or perhaps not until early evening.
Tuesday sees the heat low in the desert and an approaching weather system off the coast. This will nudge the winds up a few notches, but it will also make for gusty wind, especially late in the day. Tuesday starts with W 5-10 from Stevenson to The Dalles. Expect 12-15 by midday, and gusty 21-24 from Stevenson to The Dalles after 2pm or so. That wind will likely be short-lived near Swell City and longer-lasting near Stevenson.
Gradients and wind speeds ramp up overnight Tuesday as a trough of low pressure sends marine clouds into Portland. The current model run is stronger than yesterday’s run; we’re now expecting 26-30 right off the bat from Viento to The Dalles (betcha Mosier is strongest!) with rangy 28-32 pretty much all day from Cascade Locks to The Dalles. That said, this is driven by an approaching weather system, and that tends to make the wind less consistent. I should probably have said 25-32, with periods of stronger wind possible, most likely in the morning. The most consistent locations will likely be Rowena/Doug’s, Avery, and the Maryhill grain elevators.
Thursday also looks a bit on the rangy side of steady, with westerlies at 22-26 between Viento and Mosier in the morning and Stevenson and The Dalles in the afternoon. The long-range-not-reliable forecast suggest 13-16 on Friday.

This morning will start out with some smoke, but it will start to clear out this afternoon. Temps will be in the mid 60’s early and low to mid 90’s this afternoon. Light and variable wind. No rainbows. Tomorrow starts off in the upper 60’s and rises to the low 90’s. Light wind early. Moderate later. No rainbows. Wednesday starts off in the high 50’s and climbs to the mid 80’s. Strong westerlies. No rainbows. Thursday looks like Wednesday but not as windy.

Road and Mountain Biking
Whoopdee, Hospital Hill, and all other SDS and Kreps lands are closed from today on through the end of fire season. That’s when “significant rain” falls and the fire danger is considered over. Also currently closed: Dethman Ridge Road at Odell Creek and Highway 30 at Chenoweth Bridge. The second one has a bypass for bikes and pedestrians in place along The Dalles waterfront trail.
Upcoming Events
Our community events today include $5 Tai Chi at the Hood River Adult Center at 2:30. There’s meditation at Trinity Natural Medicine at 12. At 6, there’s pickup kickball at Daubenspeck Park and by-donation yoga at Samadhi. There’s also by-donation yoga at the Mt. Hood Town Hall at 6:30 and at Pure Yoga in The Dalles at 6:45. Tomorrow’s events include pickup touch rugby at the Hood River Marina at 5:45. The usual 6:30 meditation at Yoga Samadhi this evening will be led by two former nuns from the Thai Forest Tradition, a pretty special opportunity if meditation is your thing.
Wednesday evening is the last kid-friendly Families at Family Man event of the season. Be there at 6 with the kids for mountain biking and pizza. Friday is First Friday in Hood River with the annual Rock Paper Scissors contest at Andrew’s Pizza. The Maryhill Loops Road hosts the Gravity Sports Festival all weekend, and the Bunker to Bonneville ultramarathon is Saturday. Next Monday is the sold-out Roy Webster Cross-Channel swim.
On Wednesday, there’s a free daylong meditation retreat with Willa Thaniya & Jitindriya at Underwood Community Center 9am-4:30pm on Wednesday. This is a unique opportunity to receive instruction from two highly-respected female meditation teachers.

Mt. Hood Snow Forecast
