Gorge Wind Forecast

Today’s forecast is a bit tricky. Models are suggesting we will end up with east wind, but the morning gradient was .04 from Portland to The Dalles. We started the day with light westerlies -not whitecaps, but not glassy conditions either. The current forecast suggests the thermal low will develop over the Cascades today. If that happens, we should stay with light westerly flow through the Gorge. If not, we could see a switch to light easterly. Either way, models actually predict E 15-20 midday near Stevenson and Rooster. I think your best bet today is going to be keeping an eye on the trees and seeing what happens.

Tomorrow is a much more clear-cut picture. The thermal trough starts off well west of the Cascades, setting up E 25-30 at Rooster and E 20-25 near Stevenson for the first half of the day. As the low pressure moves a bit eastward in the afternoon, the wind will die off; models think we’ll have E 5-10 after 2pm. The wind will peak at E 5ish in the rest of the Gorge.

Monday looks like the doldrums all over the region: light easterlies early in the Gorge, calm wind midday, and light westerlies in the afternoon. No wind at the coast. No wind at Jones or Sauvie’s. This pattern is predicted to start breaking down on Tuesday (although these things often last longer than predicted – the last heat wave ended up being two weeks longer than the original forecast!). If that happens, we’ll start with light wind on Tuesday and see W 16-19 or so in the afternoon.

As of right now, Wednesday looks like gusty 24-27 and Thursday looks like 22-25, but that’s a very long ways out to be predicting. One last thing – I’m not sure if this applies in the wind section, but it does appear the fall Chinook and Steelhead runs have started. There are lots of boats out there right now, and the fish counts are in the 2000 region for Chinook and 700 region for Steelhead. Yum.

Random Morning Thoughts

I’m not in the mood to reflect this morning. I’m more in the mood to get my day started so I can ride my bike before it gets too hot out there. You enjoy the beautiful day, okay?

Disclaimer required by my grad school program: I am not your therapist (but I could be 27 graduate school credits from now). I am your weather forecaster. Take everything I say with a grain of salt, and consult with your actual therapist about your mental health issues. One other thing: I plan to keep doing this forecast indefinitely, even when I am a therapist.

Road and Mountain Biking

Whoopdee, Hospital Hill, and all other SDS and Kreps lands are closed from today on through the end of fire season. That’s when “significant rain” falls and the fire danger is considered over. Also currently closed: Dethman Ridge Road at Odell Creek and Highway 30 at Chenoweth Bridge. The second one has a bypass for bikes and pedestrians in place along The Dalles waterfront trail.

Mt. Hood Snow Forecast

The Mt. Hood snow forecast is currently on vacation. It will stay on vacation until I deem it to be close enough to winter that we need a Mt. Hood snow forecast. Be safe out there on the snow this summer!

Have an awesome day today!
