Gorge Wind Forecast
It wasn’t all that windy this morning as I was writing the forecast, but the gradients and models indicate we’ll have some wind this afternoon as high pressure offshore moves closer and the heat low sets up in the desert. HOORAY! We’ll start with westerlies at 5-10 pretty much everywhere. By midday, we should be seeing 14-17 from Stevenson to Mosier. In the afternoon, the wind will rise to gusty 22-25 from Cascade Locks to The Dalles. River flow is 129kcfs and river temp is 71 degrees.
Saturday sees the high pressure move even closer to the coast with the heat low shifting near the Idaho border. Models suggest the strongest wind will be in the morning, with afternoon westerlies impacted by the heat low filling back to the west. We’re currently on track for 16-19 early from Cascade Locks to Hood River with 10-13 from Mosier to Arlington. The eastern Gorge wind will die off completely and the western Gorge wind will likely drop off to 12-15 or a bit less in the afternoon.
The GFS and Euro have different ideas about Sunday. The GFS says we’ll have light westerlies early and light easterlies in the afternoon. The Euro gives us westerlies at 5-10 all day. Similar conclusions can be reached about Monday and Tuesday: east or west with the wind speed in the light and variable to 5-8 range.
The GFS currently indicates that this pattern will start to break down late next Wednesday or Thursday. Putting a lot of faith in that forecast is not a good idea; this particular setup (Rex Block), tends to last longer than initial model impressions.

Random Morning Thoughts
We humans are very good at rationalizing our decisions. We create stories that allow us to do things that go against our integrity and sense of fairness. Our internal dialogue can drown out our underlying sense of what is right and wrong. When this happens, we do things that may lead to regret, guilt, shame, embarrassment, or harm to others.
Developing the ability to notice when we are rationalizing is important. This ability is not one that is based in our thoughts; after all, thoughts are the basis of rationalization! In the case of decision-making, our body is often the source of wisdom.
If we notice ourselves creating a story about why we are making a choice, we can further explore the choice by shifting attention from cognitive processes to physical processes. Is the body tight? Relaxed? Are there emotional signals present: a heaviness in the heart, tightness in the throat, constriction of the physical posture, expansion of the physical posture? What actual emotions are present? Fear, worry, a sense of rightness, anger?
There are times we can think ourselves through a decision, but our understanding of our reasoning will be enhanced by checking in with the body. Thoughts can only get us so far, and they can often trick us into doing the easy thing, rather than the right thing. Be good. Be kind. Be brave. Have an awesome day.
Disclaimer required by my grad school program: I am not your therapist (but I could be 27 graduate school credits from now). I am your weather forecaster. Take everything I say with a grain of salt, and consult with your actual therapist about your mental health issues. One other thing: I plan to keep doing this forecast indefinitely, even when I am a therapist.
Gorge Weather Forecast
In case you were wondering, yesterday’s high temp of 107 shattered the same-day record of 99. Today’s record is 100, and it’s going to be close… It’s very smoky out there this morning, and the air quality index has climbed into the “unhealthy” range. That’s an improvement from last night when it was “very unhealthy”. Anyway, the smoke will lessen a little this afternoon and return tonight. Temps will be near 70 early (open windows) and near 100 this afternoon (close windows). Building west wind. No rainbows. Tomorrow looks hot and smoky. Temps will be near 60 (?) early and in the mid 90’s in the afternoon. Light westerlies. No rainbows. Sunday looks hot and stifling. Temps will be near 60 (?) early and in the mid to upper 90’s in the afternoon. Light wind. No rainbows.

White Sprinter Van of the Day
Road and Mountain Biking
Hospital Hill, Whoopdee, and all other Kreps/Stevenson lands will close to the public on Saturday morning and remain closed until “significant rain”, aka the end of fire season. Oh wait, there is! Chenoweth Bridge in The Dalles will be closed for replacement from 8/1 to 8/30. That’s the bridge just west of the gas station at the west end of town. If you want to ride Sevenmile Loop, it is still possible by taking the waterfront path via the Discovery Center. Also closed for the next several months is Odell Creek Bridge at the west end of Dethman Ridge Road.
Upcoming Events
It’s First Friday in Hood River tonight, and it should be tolerable if you bring a spray bottle to spritz yourself. Tonight is also the movie Zootopia at Cascade Locks Marine Park, outdoors, free, at dusk. Tomorrow is the Double-Damned sailboat race from Cascade Locks to The Dalles. You can watch movies tomorrow night: The Jungle Book at Jackson Park in Hood River and The Secret Life of Pets at Sorosis Park in The Dalles.
Other events tomorrow include a trail run in Post Canyon at 8, a women’s bike ride that leaves Mountain View Cycles at 9, the Uphill Challenge at Mt. Hood Meadows, and a potluck (10:30), work party (1pm) and tea party (3pm) at Pacific Hermitage.

Mt. Hood Snow Forecast
The Mt. Hood snow forecast is currently on vacation. It will stay on vacation until I deem it to be close enough to winter that we need a Mt. Hood snow forecast. Be safe out there on the snow this summer!
Have an awesome day today!
