Meet your forecaster: Temira

For almost 30 years, Temira (they/them) has been making the most of the Gorge: riding river swell, shredding powder, and cycling all the gravel and pavement and trails. This is Temira’s playground, their gym… their life’s work.

This passion led Temira to take a vow: In 2006, Temira decided to provide the most accurate, hyper-local weather forecasts possible. Today, Temira’s forecasts have become an essential resource for thousands of skiers, snowboarders, wind sports enthusiasts and Gorge commuters. With Temira’s guidance, you can plan ahead, time your sessions perfectly, and just plain have more fun! But the story doesn’t end there.

There’s “Temira’s Awesome Travel Advisory Service” and “Valuable Advice for Gardeners Inhabiting Neighboring Areas” – the Gorge’s premier microclimate forecast and gardening information. When winter storms, extreme heat, hail, or avalanches on SR-14 and I-84 threaten, TATAS keeps everyone and their tomatoes and giant pumpkins and cash crops safe.

Temira’s relentless efforts keep the forecasts flowing. But it ain’t easy: each forecast takes a couple of hours. That’s where you come in. By contributing, you’re not just supporting Temira’s passion project – you’re investing in the safety and well-being of the entire Gorge community. Your financial support ensures these essential forecasts remain accessible to all, free of charge.

So please take a moment to click one of the buttons below. Donate $19.99 or more (how much does this forecast enhance your life?) and get the email in your inbox. Or just contribute enough for a cup or pound of coffee. I need coffee! Every contribution, no matter the amount, makes a difference. Help me keep this labor of love alive, so we can all commute safely, play in the river, and shred Mt. Hood with the best weather forecasts possible. Thank you!

Gorge Wind Forecast

Happy Tuesday morning! Yesterday’s weak frontal system seemed a lot more than weak, especially in the afternoon when the upper flow was enough to cause masses of lenticular clouds all over the sky. That certainly threw a wrench into the wind results. Ah well. On to today, gradients started off at .11 (pdx-dls) and .08 (dls-psc) with a 1032mb offshore high. A trough of low pressure will approach from the west late in the day. That could destabilize the wind field a bit, so get your windsports in by early afternoon for the best results.

We’ll see Dawn Patrol at 20-24 from Viento to Hood River with 5-10 in Cascade Locks and 13-16 further east. The wind will quickly jump to the 24-27 range from Viento to Hood River this morning, filling in from Cascade Locks to Rufus this afternoon. Looks like the wind will stay at 12-15 or so east of Rufus. Given the intensity of the offshore high pressure system and the large cross-Cascade gradient, it’s possible we’ll see strong wind late morning than the models and forecast are predicting. River flow is 116kcfs and temp is 67 degrees.

Looks like we’ll have a stronger influx of marine air tomorrow morning – not enough for clouds in Hood River, but enough for a cloud line east of the metro area. We’ll start the day with 24-27 from Viento to Mosier. By afternoon, we’ll have 22-26 from Cascade Locks to The Dalles with 12-15 or less further east.

Thursday currently looks like 17-20 early and 25-29 in the afternoon. As of right now, and this could change, we’re looking at 21-24 Friday, 27-31 Saturday, and 25-29 on Sunday. Mother Nature loves Kiteboard for Cancer!

Kiteboard for Cancer and Camp Koru Need You!

Kiteboard for Cancer happens July 14th through 16th at Hood River’s Event Site. They are still looking for a few volunteers. If you have some time, sign up now. If time is difficult to come by, make a donation to support camps for young adult survivors of cancer. I donated already. Your turn!

Random Morning Thoughts

It’s another beautiful day here in the Gorge. While I would love to take some time to reflect this morning, that’s going to have to happen during my drive to the city. Ah, if only I could stay here all the time, soaking up the beauty. I guess I’ll just appreciate it more when I return this afternoon. Have an amazing day in the beautiful Gorge, and don’t forget to take a few moments to bask in the natural wonders!

Disclaimer required by my grad school program: I am not your therapist (but I could be 27 graduate school credits from now). I am your weather forecaster. Take everything I say with a grain of salt, and consult with your actual therapist about your mental health issues. One other thing: I plan to keep doing this forecast indefinitely, even when I am a therapist.

Gorge Weather Forecast

Looks like we’ll have exactly the same weather today, tomorrow, and Thursday: temps in the mid 50’s early (open windows) and the low 80’s in the afternoon (close windows). Moderate west wind. No rainbows.

White Sprinter Van of the Day

Road and Mountain Biking

We have official confirmation that Gunsight is open. Photos on Facebook prove it. We do not have official confirmation of Plains of Abraham, but we have Strava rumors. No word on Huffman Peak. If you’d like to go for a long drive and do a big ride, Ollalie-Oleary-King’s Castle is open.

Upcoming Events

Today’s events start with the 11am community dance exercise class at the White Salmon Grange. There’s pickup touch rugby at 5:45 at the Hood River Marina, and the very popular community meditation at Yoga Samadhi at 6:30: free, and led by the monks from Pacific Hermitage.

Looking forward to the weekend, Cascade Locks has the Gorge Skiff Regatta Friday through Sunday, Hood River has Kiteboard for Cancer Friday through Sunday, Trout Lake has the Wild Woman 50k, half-marathon and relay on Saturday, the Gorge Outrigger race is set to run on Saturday, and the High Cascades 100 is in Bend on Sunday.

Mt. Hood Snow Forecast

The Mt. Hood snow forecast is currently on vacation. It will stay on vacation until I deem it to be close enough to winter that we need a Mt. Hood snow forecast. Be safe out there on the snow this summer!

Have an awesome day today!

Temira
