Gorge Wind Forecast
It’s a windy Monday morning, and you should get out and get it. The overall setup will change tonight, making the wind less reliable and not-as-strong for the next couple of days. For today, we have a relatively stable atmosphere, strong gradients, and, and, and… well, we have wind. At 7am, the pdx-dls gradient was .15, with an addition .05 out east. River flow is way down at 189kcfs, and river temp is 65 degrees.
This setup should give us 26-30 with slight chance of “+” for the morning from Swell to Mosier with 18-23 further east and 15-18 under the clouds at Stevenson. The GFS suggests the wind will back off a bit as Portland heats up today, but I think maybe it’s underestimating the clouds. Let’s contradict the GFS and go with 25-29 for the Swell/Hood River area until the mid-afternoon die-off to gusty 20-24. The Rowena to Rufus stretch will join in the fun by late morning, holding through the evening. Arlington will probably be too far east for more than an afternoon session at 17-21. Stevenson, once the clouds burn off, should see 23-16. Enjoy!

Gorge Wind Forecast, continued.
The picture gets more complicated tomorrow as the offshore high weakens and a low pressure system near Alaska strengthens, creating a trough of low pressure along the coast and over the PNW. High pressure over the Rockies adds to this picture. We’ll still see weak onshore flow: expect 5-10 out of the west in the morning, 10-13 by noon from Cascade Locks to Hood River, and 15-18 in the afternoon from Cascade Locks to The Dalles.
Wednesday looks similar, but we’ll be under southerly flow. That could disturb the wind field more by firing off some convection and thunder, but the atmosphere currently looks stable enough for that not to happen. So, let’s go with 10-13 out of the west for much of the day. A weak weather impulse late in the day might give us a short-lived burst of 16-19 from Stevenson to The Dalles. In the long-range-not-reliable forecast, an approaching front on Thursday afternoon gives us gusty 24-27, and a more stable setup on Friday starts us off with Dawn Patrol at 25-29.

Mt. Hood Snow Forecast
The Mt. Hood snow forecast is currently on vacation. It will stay on vacation until I deem it to be close enough to winter that we need a Mt. Hood snow forecast. Be safe out there on the snow this summer!
Random Morning Thoughts
I’m finding it quite hard to concentrate this morning on reflection because I can see the huge whitecaps on the river. I want to be doing that, not this. Ah goodness. We do this all the time. We think that That Thing will bring us more happiness than This Thing. What we forget is that happiness is a matter of running the “happy” neural networks, and that those networks are contained in our bodies.
Happiness is not a thing that comes in from outside. Yes, outside things may trigger the “happy” neural networks, but that’s a pretty inconsistent and unreliable way to force happiness to arise. It is better, I think, to train the mind to find happiness and ease and well-being across situations.
There are simple things you can do to make happiness more likely to arise spontaneously. Start your day by making a list of three things you are grateful for. Do lovingkindness meditation. Be around people who are happy, kind, caring and at ease.
Hmm… interesting. Simply by taking a couple of minutes to reflect upon happiness, I’m less concerned with the whitecaps. I am, however, hungry, and quite grateful that I’m privileged enough to have food in the fridge. What are you grateful for? Have an awesome day!

White Sprinter Van of the Day
Road and Mountain Biking
I received a report yesterday that the wildflowers are currently amazing up at the 44 Road trails. Guess I will have to go ride them to confirm if this is true or not. Falls Creek reports give trees-down at 5-6 on the trails from Old Man Pass to Falls Creek proper with no trees down on Falls Creek itself. No word on Gunsight. No word on Boulder Lakes. Ape Canyon and Plains of Abraham are not yet open.
Upcoming Events
We’ll have the regular Monday community events today: meditation at noon at Trinity Natural Medicine, $5 Tai chi at the Hood River Valley Adult Center at 2:30, pickup kickball at 6 at Daubenspeck Park in Bingen, and three free yoga classes: 6pm at Samadhi in White Salmon, 6:30 at the Mt. Hood Town Hall, and 6:45 YogaFaith class at Pure Yoga Hood River. Tonight from 6 to 8, Big Winds in Hood River has their 30th anniversary party.
Coming up tomorrow, it’s the 42nd annual Kollas Kranmer run from Odell to Hood River and the hero’s challenge race in Washougal. I’m not sure which of the regular Tuesday events are on or off tomorrow night. I don’t even know if meditation at Samadhi (6:30pm) is on or off!
Have an awesome day today!
