Saturday. Unreliable wind. Happy Canada Day!!!

Gorge Wind Forecast

One of the things I said yesterday about today was that we were going to want to get on the water for dawn patrol to get the strongest, steadiest, most reliable wind. Unfortunately, that became a pre-dawn patrol; if you look at the iWindsurf/iKitesurf graph for Swell, you’ll see that there was a very steady 2-3 hour period in the middle of the night. We’re left this morning with a very big gradient (.17 pdx-dls, .05 dls-psc) and wind in the low to mid 20’s throughout the Gorge. Before I forget, river temp is 64 degrees, flow is 216kcfs, and 2136 summer Chinook made it past Bonneville yesterday. If you want fish, stop by the Windance parking lot and get some of my friend Doug’s Native-caught fish.

As today goes on, a trough of low pressure will continue to shift eastward, destabilizing the wind field. We’ll also see a chance of convection and thunder in the eastern desert this afternoon and evening. As you may have guessed, these are not good signs for predictable, reliable wind. So… we’re going to see periods of strong wind today, with 26-30 possible at times. Heck, we’ll probably see a period of 30+ at Doug’s. What times? What places? Well… I’d skip Roosevelt/Arlington today due to afternoon convection (p.s. Pow-wow is July 14-16 – no camping at Roosie then/there). Next thought: the western Gorge will have a more stable setup as the day progresses, so perhaps Stevenson after the marine layer burns off or Swell early afternoon. Avery because it’s always windy. The Wunderbar/Event Site because they always seem a little stronger in these complicated setups. So.. to put it succinctly, we are looking at a day of gusty 20-30 with periods of stronger wind, probably becoming steadier from Stevenson to Doug’s late in the day. Not helpful, is that? Just pick a place and rig something and you’ll be good!

Gorge Wind Forecast, continued.

Tomorrow looks more stable for the first ½ of the day. A system to the north will likely impact the wind quality in the afternoon. That said, we should start the day with Dawn Patrol at 21-24 from Swell to Mosier with 15-18 at Cascade Locks. We’ll see a mid-morning to early afternoon period of 24-27 from Stevenson to The Dalles, followed by a gustier afternoon at 24-27 from Stevenson to Rufus.

Monday sees a weather system pass by to the north, probably impacting the wind quality. That said, we should see 23-26 all day long from Hood River to The Dalles. Cascade Locks will start the day at 13-16 under a deep marine layer. It should pick up to 20-23 by afternoon as a deep marine layer burns off. Tuesday currently look like 20-23. The picture gets a little more complicated after Tuesday, so let’s hold off for now.

Random Morning Thoughts

Most of us are very busy, as you may have noticed. If you are not busy, I have some tasks I could use assistance with, so please let me know when you are available! Anyway, I have found that the more tasks I have, the more overwhelming each individual task can seem. I find ways to think of each little step that a particular job involves, and can’t make a move to start the seemingly endless chain of events. Perhaps you have had this experience?

For example, one of the things I’ve been meaning to do for a while is redo this email. A big reason for this is the spam filter readings – they have been high enough to keep the email out of some providers’ inboxes. I was exhausted yesterday because I overclimbed on my bicycle the last week, so I sat down and tackled the email. It’s not quite done, but it’s close, as you can see. I had anticipated it would take me at least a full day to accomplish this task due to all the steps involved. It took about 2.5 hours.

This was a good reality check for me. And possibly for all of us. If there’s a task you just can’t seem to make yourself tackle, tackle it on paper first. Write down the steps. Estimate how long they’ll take. Maybe show your list to someone and have them reality-check it. See if you can make yourself check off just that first task and get yourself on the road to getting that darn thing off your mind forever. You can do it. You are awesome. Have an awesome day!

White Sprinter Van of the Day

Road and Mountain Biking

Nothing new to report today. Plains of Abraham, Gunsight, and Boulder Lakes are all still closed as far as I know. Same goes for Huffman Peak, unless you have different information. The Forest Loop above Trout Lake is rideable – there are two washouts on the 88 Road. Ainsworth to Larch Mountain is still the best road ride in the Gorge.

Upcoming Events

Today’s events include the Ft. Dalles Fourth celebration, starting off with the Rocket Run on the riverfront trail at 7:30 and ending with fireworks tonight. Lots of fireworks! If you want to run today but not race, there’s a group run in Post Canyon at 8. Same every Saturday. There are Gorge Cup windsurfing races today and tomorrow at Hood River’s Event Site and the WIND youth regatta sailboat races at the Cascade Locks Marina both days this weekend.

There’s free yoga this morning at 9 at Hood River’s Waterfront Park and also at Lewis and Clark Park in The Dalles. There are three free yoga classes tomorrow. Mountain View Cycles has a shop ride just for women at 9am today. At 1 today, Pacific Hermitage in White Salmon has a garden party and tea party. There’s also a potluck at 10:30. Looking at tomorrow, Windance has a swap meet starting at 8am. For the 4th, there are two running races: the Kollas Kranmer from Odell to Hood River and the Hero’s Challenge bike/run race in Washougal.

Have an awesome day today!
