Gorge Wind Forecast
Yesterday ended up being much more up-and-down than I’d expected. Not to say that it wasn’t fun – the swell and ramps near Swell were lovely, but it sure was gusty! That was caused by an unexpected, unknown, and unanticipated weak weather disturbance moving overhead. Scouring the models this morning, I see nothing of the sort for today. Fingers crossed that I’m missing nothing. So, in theory, today should be steadier and more consistent. Morning gradients of .15 (pdx-dls) and .07 (dls-psc) indicate good potential, but marine cloud penetration past Hood River is limiting the morning wind. As of 6:30, we had 18-22 everywhere except Maryhill, where the sensor reads whatever it wants with little correlation with reality, and Arlington, with low double-digits.
The wind should climb into the 22-25 range from Mosier to Rufus this morning. Swell and Hood River, under the clouds, should remain at 18-22 or so. By early afternoon, we should be seeing 25-29 from Swell (gusty, likely) to Rowena. Rufus is going to be on the eastern edge of the strongest wind area this afternoon. I’d give it 50/50 for 22-25 or 25-29. Areas east of Rufus will remain in the low double digits today. If Stevenson clears up (likely), it’ll rise to 22-25 this afternoon. River temp is 63 degrees. Flow is 239kcfs. 2699 summer chinook made it past Bonneville yesterday.

Gorge Wind Forecast, continued.
We’ll see high pressure start to build over the western half of the state on Thursday. This will minimize the marine layer and the cross-Cascade gradient. Models currently suggest 12-15 from Viento to Hood River in the morning and 12-15 from Stevenson to Hood River in the afternoon. If we see slightly more cloud cover than expected, we’ll also see slightly more wind than expected.
Friday starts off with slightly stronger west wind than Thursday, perhaps 16-19 or so. As the ridge shifts inland, cooler air will filter inland. That combines with hot air in the desert for a late-day push of gusty 22-26 from Stevenson to Doug’s. As of this morning, it looks like we’ll see gusty 25-29 Saturday, 23-26 Sunday, and 25-29 Monday. But that could all change, because forecasting that far out is a very silly idea!

Random Morning Thoughts
Following up on yesterday’s thought about our emotional experience, pleasant or unpleasant, merely being an indicator of aliveness… Unless we are deeply self-connected, we have strategies to avoid feeling unpleasant emotions. In some cases, this is an adaptive function – if we don’t have the capacity to manage intense pain, it’s healthy to distract ourselves (preferably through the use of means other than substances). However, if that’s the case, it’s also important to develop the capacity to handle higher levels of emotional distress.
But that’s not my point. Actually, in a way, it is. When we feel overwhelmed by certain emotions, we begin to fear them in a subtle, unconscious way. We start to avoid situation that may trigger those emotions. We develop secondary emotions to avoid the emotions that give us trouble. For example, we may lash out in anger rather than feeling our sadness or shame.
Almost all of us avoid some of our emotions. For a fun project, see if you can figure out which emotions you are avoiding and what your strategies are. Then see if you can feel that emotion just a little bit. Notice that the world doesn’t end if you do. You’re still sitting where you are and nothing bad is happening. Doing this will increase your capacity to be present with your experience. Have fun with yourself. Have an awesome day.

White Sprinter Van of the Day
Road and Mountain Biking
Latest: a trustworthy report on the Forest Loop above Trout Lake appeared to be not-so-trustworthy. Careful Strava research by Viggers™ revealed that 10 or so people rode the loop over the weekend. It appears that there is a second washout on the 88 road, but that the loop is rideable. In other news, the Gifford Pinchot website reports that as of 6/20, solid snow began one mile from the Ape Canyon trailhead. Wow. It’s going to be a long time before Plains of Abraham is accessible from that side!
Upcoming Events
Today’s day two of the White Salmon Riverfest. There’s an extreme kayaking race on the Green Truss this morning and possibly at Husum Falls this afternoon – give Wet Planet a call for more details. At 10 today, there’s a river restoration project and kids art project at Northwestern Park.
Tonight is ladies kite and windsurf night at the Event Site in Hood River. Other women’s only-events around the area include the Post n’ Pinot mountain bike ride Thursday nights at Dirty Fingers and the Mountain View Cycles shop ride on saturday at 9am.
Other events tonight include ping pong at the Hood River Armory at 5:30, and Sailboat races at 6pm at the Hood River Marina. If you want to sail, Cascade Locks has community sailing every Thursday night at 6.
Coming up this weekend, there are windsurfing races at the Event Site both days, sailboat races in Cascade Locks both days, and a work party at Pacific Hermitage on Saturday morning.
Have an awesome day today!
