Meet your forecaster: Temira

For almost 30 years, Temira (they/them) has been making the most of the Gorge: riding river swell, shredding powder, and cycling all the gravel and pavement and trails. This is Temira’s playground, their gym… their life’s work.

This passion led Temira to take a vow: In 2006, Temira decided to provide the most accurate, hyper-local weather forecasts possible. Today, Temira’s forecasts have become an essential resource for thousands of skiers, snowboarders, wind sports enthusiasts and Gorge commuters. With Temira’s guidance, you can plan ahead, time your sessions perfectly, and just plain have more fun! But the story doesn’t end there.

There’s “Temira’s Awesome Travel Advisory Service” and “Valuable Advice for Gardeners Inhabiting Neighboring Areas” – the Gorge’s premier microclimate forecast and gardening information. When winter storms, extreme heat, hail, or avalanches on SR-14 and I-84 threaten, TATAS keeps everyone and their tomatoes and giant pumpkins and cash crops safe.

Temira’s relentless efforts keep the forecasts flowing. But it ain’t easy: each forecast takes a couple of hours. That’s where you come in. By contributing, you’re not just supporting Temira’s passion project – you’re investing in the safety and well-being of the entire Gorge community. Your financial support ensures these essential forecasts remain accessible to all, free of charge.

Gorge Wind Forecast

Yesterday played out almost as expected, with a few hours delay in the development of the strongest wind. That, folks, is what the Gorge can do when there’s high pressure offshore and low pressure in the desert combined with an atmospheric cap that keeps the wind down on the river. Despite the presence of a weak weather disturbance moving through today, models are insisting the cap will stay in place, keeping the wind where it belongs.

So, you’ll want to head east of the low clouds for the strongest wind. Under the clouds, from Stevenson to The Dalles, you can expect gusty 18-23, unless the clouds burn back (not so likely) in which case the Rowena stretch will have stronger wind. Further east, we’ll have 26-30 this morning (that 33 iWindsurf reading at Arlington doesn’t count, because it reads 3-5mph high compared to Swell) and 30-35 this afternoon, definitely at Arlington/Threemile, but possibly also near Rufus. River flow is down to 370kcfs today at The Dalles. Temp is 58 degrees.

Gorge Wind Forecast, continued.

High pressure builds east of the Cascades on Wednesday, knocking gradients way down. The strength of the offshore high also wanes on Wednesday, for a double whammy. We’ll start the day with west wind at 7-10mph. By 2pm, we’ll have 12-15 from Stevenson to The Dalles. The wind will pick up a little more to 15-18 or so from Stevenson to The Dalles from mid-afternoon on.

Thursday doesn’t hold much in the way of wind, but it does carry impressive potential for rain. There will be no wind in the morning, and a short-lived burst of teen-strength westerlies in the afternoon as this weather system moves through.

Looking at Friday, Oregon will be sitting under week high pressure with no offshore or inland support for gradients. That sets us up for W 10-13 all day. As of right now, the weekend looks sunny with westerlies in the mid-teens or so, but that’s really too far out to be making predictions.

Random Morning Thoughts

It’s already 9 o’clock, and my Rockstar isn’t working. So, I’ll set this aside for today and move on to something more athletic. Have an awesome day!

Disclaimer required by my grad school program: I am not your therapist (but I could be 40 graduate school credits from now). I am your weather forecaster. Take everything I say with a grain of salt, and consult with your actual therapist about your mental health issues. One other thing: I plan to keep doing this forecast indefinitely, even when I am a therapist.

Gorge Weather Forecast

It’s mostly cloudy this morning in Hood River as a big bad marine layer blankets the western Gorge. Expect similar weather today with temps in the mid 50’s early and the low 60’s in the afternoon. Moderate to strong west wind. .05% chance of rainbows. Wednesday looks mostly sunny. Temps will be in the upper 40’s early and the low 70’s in the afternoon. Light west wind. No rainbows. White Sprinter Van of the Day

Road and Mountain Biking

I betcha the dirt is amazing in Post Canyon right now and also on the 44 Road trails. And now that it’s Monday, it’ll be YOURS, all YOURS. The Kreps are rounding up the cattle on Hospital Hill. They’re not done yet, but soon, soon, you will be able to take your dog for a ride there to pick up ticks and poison oak. People keep asking, so I’ll say it again: as of a week ago, Falls Creek was not open from the top. Lewis River is open.

Upcoming Events

Today’s community events start with a dance exercise class at the White Salmon Grange at 11. There’s pickup touch rugby tonight at the Hood River Marina at 5:45 and meditation at Yoga Samadhi at 6:30 with sage advice from the monks of Pacific Hermitage. At 5:30 tonight, Big Winds is hosting Gorge Green Drinks with a discussion about the Towns to Trails master plan.

Looking ahead to the weekend, Arlington hosts the A-Town Throwdown windsports contest on Saturday, with vendors and music. Cascade Locks has opening day of sailboat season with free sailboat rides for everyone. The White Salmon Backyard Half Marathon also happens Saturday, benefiting the White Salmon cross-country team. Many thanks to the Kreps for the generous use of their land and trails.

Have an awesome day today!
