Gorge Wind Forecast
It’s a cloudy morning with showers in the forecast later and just a slight chance of thunder. This weather is driven by a low pressure system sitting right off the coast. That low will drift southward today and slowly move inland over the Cali border the next couple of days, setting up gusty, inconsistent wind for the weekend and then a massive day on Monday. For today, Saturday, we’ll have light wind through the morning hours. The wind will pick up to 7-10 or so around 2pm and inconsistent 16-19 from Rowena to Arlington after 3pm. The western Gorge, Stevenson to Mosier or so, will remain cloudy with on-and-off showers that increase this afternoon. That will make the wind in those locations unreliable and/or non-existent.
Looking at Sunday, that low begins to move eastward, shifting the showers eastward as well. This weather picture is still quite complicated. One thing worth noting is that the atmosphere will start to stabilize west of the Cascades and in the near east as the day goes on, increasing the wind consistency a little bit. So, we’ll start off Sunday with westerlies at 10-13 through most of the Gorge. by 11am, we’ll have gusty 13-16 from Swell to Mosier or so. The wind will pick up to gusty 20-24 from Stevenson to Rufus in the afternoon, although if Rufus is still showery, you can scratch it off the list. River flow is currently 453kcfs, so it’s probably off the list for most people anyway!

Gorge Wind Forecast, continued.
Now, let’s talk about Monday, because it looks very exciting for those of us who like strong wind. That pesky low pressure system will be over the Rockies, where it can’t cause damage here in the Gorge. We’ll have very strong high pressure off the coast and a cap in the atmosphere that gives us stability. All those gradients will be pressed down to the river, setting up a huge day. As of right now, the GFS says we’ll have Dawn Patrol at 26-30+ from Mosier eastward. By 11am, on through sunset, we’ll have wind averages in the 30-40 range east of the low clouds. This begs the question of where the low clouds will be. At this point, it looks like they may push past Hood River, keeping conditions at Swell and HR and Stevenson less windy and much more gusty. SAD. If you have time to drive out east on Monday, you’ll find nuking wind and massive waves. This is the kind of day where you’ll want to consider a PFD, because it’s quite possible your gear will blow away. Ride with a partner, and keep them in sight.
Looking at Tuesday, our gradients will flatten just a bit, but we’ll still have the same general picture of offshore high pressure and inland low pressure. I’m thinking we’ll have Dawn Patrol at 25-29 from Mosier to Arlington with afternoon wind at 28-32 from Swell to Arlington. Wednesday currently looks to max out at 20-24.

Random Morning Thoughts
I was talking to a friend yesterday, and he asked me about how I compare the painful events that happen in people’s lives. For example, is it worse to lose a job or to have a friend die. For me, comparing events is a false paradigm. As both a therapist and a friend, I take a person’s suffering at face value. The cause of suffering is less important than the level of suffering.
Comparing suffering may occasionally serve to make us feel better, but it often brings up shame and guilt. When we’re suffering, it’s important to validate how we feel. Telling ourselves that we ‘should’ hurt less or that we’re not entitled to be hurting makes us hurt more. It also keeps us from processing the grief we may be experiencing.
Because each of us has a different worldview and a different life experience, we will interpret events in our own way. We will suffer in different ways. Because of this, it’s important to be kind to ourselves, and others, when they are hurting. Try to understand why the pain is so intense. Empathize with it. Sit with yourself and others in kindness and with respect, and the pain will slowly fade. Have an awesome day.
Disclaimer required by my grad school program: I am not your therapist (but I could be 40 graduate school credits from now). I am your weather forecaster. Take everything I say with a grain of salt, and consult with your actual therapist about your mental health issues. One other thing: I plan to keep doing this forecast indefinitely, even when I am a therapist.

White Sprinter Van of the Day
Road and Mountain Biking
We’ve had some rain over the last 24 hours, and I suspect the higher levels of Post are getting muddy and the lower level are a bit slick. But you could ride and check it out! I suggest doing that early, as we’re likely to see showers after 11am today. The snow level will be around 5000′-6000′ today, so keep that in mind if you’re considering a high-elevation ride of some sort. It’s going to be rainy and cold up high.
Upcoming Events
Events today include the outfound series festival at Hood River’s Event Site. You can pick up tickets at outfoundseries.com or at the entrance. There are lots of other events today too – free yoga in Spanish at 7 at Flow, a trail run in Post Canyon at 8, and free yoga at the Mosier Plateau Trail at 9. There’s a free 4 hour meditation seminar at Yoga Samadhi at 1 today with teachers from Pacific Hermitage.
Tomorrow morning at 10, there’s a ping pong clinic at the Hood River Armory, followed by open play – apparently there are some pretty good table tennis players around here. There’s a work party tomorrow morning on the Weldon Wagon Trail in White Salmon – that starts at 9am.
Have an awesome day today!
