Outfound Series Festival – Hood River
OutFound is a 3-day adventure sports and outdoor innovation festival taking place on June 9-11th on The Event Site. The activities include a speaker series, a startup competition for outdoor driven brands, an expo, hands-on workshops, creatives games and art, outdoor activities and sports on site, networking hours, outdoor films and music performances.
OutFound’s goal is to bring outdoor enthusiasts and innovators together for 3 days of experiential activities. It’s about learning new skills, meeting inspiring leaders and engaging in unforgettable outdoor focused experiences. Outdoor innovation is about out of the box thinking and this mixture of activities encourages that. We believe that getting adventure enthusiasts and leaders together in a creative setting will be a catalyst for exciting new ideas, projects and businesses in the outdoor space.
Gorge Wind Forecast
It’s looking rather grey and wet out there this morning, which is not a great sign for wind. That said, a cold front will move across the Cascades this afternoon, bumping up the gradients and turning on the wind. Given the setup, the wind will be gusty and inconsistent. For this morning, expect rain combined with west wind at 0-15 depending on location. We’ll see the westerlies start to pick up around noon, becoming W 10-13. This will happen first near Hood River and then move out east. By 2pm, we’ll have 23-27 east of the low clouds, probably east of The Dalles, but possibly at Rowena/Doug’s as well. River flow is 471kcfs and river temp is 57 degrees.
An upper level low pressure system approaches the coast on Friday for decreased E/W pressure gradient. We’ll have calm to very light west wind to start the day. In the afternoon, we’ll see gusty 12-15 or so from Mosier (perhaps Hood River) to The Dalles. There’s also a slight chance of thunder and instability on Friday afternoon, which would make the wind both lighter and less consistent.

Gorge Wind Forecast, continued.
That low pressure system moves closer to the coast, just offshore actually, on Saturday. This leaves us under southerly flow with light E/W gradients and some afternoon instability. The wind looks light easterly in the morning and W 10-13 after 2pm, but given the amount of instability, it’s possible the wind could be less (or even more!). Anyway, there’s a good chance of thunder on Saturday afternoon.
As of right now, the GFS is suggesting that the low pressure system will move inland on Sunday afternoon. If that happens, we’ll see gradients ramp up. An additional aspect of this is the possibility of thunderstorms on the east side of that low. Interpretation: you’ll probably want to aim for the western Gorge on Sunday afternoon. Now, this isn’t certain by any means, but the GFS is now calling for 26-30+ in the western Gorge on Sunday afternoon. Let’s not get too excited yet, k? The GFS also suggests a very windy day on Monday.

Random Morning Thoughts
Humans, despite what individualistic philosophies would have you believe, are pack animals. Like other pack animals, we are capable of transmitting emotions to the people around us. Anxiety, for one, is easy to transmit, because it is a signal that danger is near. This is a self-protective mechanism. Further evidence for the transmission of emotions exists in situations where pack mentality becomes apparent (riots, mobs, etc.) People’s sensitivity to and awareness of others’ emotions varies on a spectrum running from people with empathy disorders (sociopathy, for example) to true empaths (yes, like Deanna Troi from Star Trek TNG – that shit’s real).
Anyway, my point is that it’s worth taking care with the people we choose for friends. Their emotions will impact ours. I’m not referring to transitory emotional states – we all have our ups and downs, and one of the great honors of being human is being able to support someone on a rough day. I’m talking about personality.
If we surround ourselves with people who are consistently angry, who have closed hearts, who are greedy, jealous, spiteful and hateful, our energy will likely shift to match. If we surround ourselves with people who radiate love, kindness, and joy, our hearts will open as well.
It’s also important to take a moment to reflect on why we spend time around the people we do, whether they are joyful people or unhappy people. By reflecting on our choice of companions, we can learn more about who we are. I’m not saying it’s time to unfriend everyone and start over. This is just an opportunity to learn more about you and develop some healthier relationships. Have an awesome day!

White Sprinter Van of the Day
Road and Mountain Biking
We’ve had 1/4” of rain in Hood River so far in this system. It usually takes about 1/10” rain to bring the trails back from dry to tacky, so it’s likely to be slick out there right now. Just keep that in mind if you are riding. Also, the snow level will be around 5000′ Friday and Saturday with periods of precipitation. Keep that in mind when choosing your rides the next few days!
Upcoming Events
Today’s events start off with a free yoga class at 6:30am at Flow. There’s ping pong tonight at the Hood River Armory at 5:30 for $5, and there’s free Zumba at St. Francis House in Odell at 6.
If you use the trails up on the 44 Road, make some space tomorrow night for the 44 Trails Association fundraiser at Kickstand Coffee in Hood River at 7pm. There will be drinks, raffles, and a mountain bike movie. Speaking of 44 Road trails, everything below the 450 trail is open and clear of downed trees.
Looking at Friday, the Outfound Series Festival is at the Hood River Event Site. Lots of worshops, talks, activities and more, which could be a great way to spend a weekend that has some rain in the forecast. There’s a free half-day meditation retreat at Yoga Samadhi on Saturday from 1-5pm. It will be led by the monks from Pacific Hermitage.
Have an awesome day today!
