Meet your forecaster: Temira

For almost 30 years, Temira (they/them) has been making the most of the Gorge: riding river swell, shredding powder, and cycling all the gravel and pavement and trails. This is Temira’s playground, their gym… their life’s work.

This passion led Temira to take a vow: In 2006, Temira decided to provide the most accurate, hyper-local weather forecasts possible. Today, Temira’s forecasts have become an essential resource for thousands of skiers, snowboarders, wind sports enthusiasts and Gorge commuters. With Temira’s guidance, you can plan ahead, time your sessions perfectly, and just plain have more fun! But the story doesn’t end there.

There’s “Temira’s Awesome Travel Advisory Service” and “Valuable Advice for Gardeners Inhabiting Neighboring Areas” – the Gorge’s premier microclimate forecast and gardening information. When winter storms, extreme heat, hail, or avalanches on SR-14 and I-84 threaten, TATAS keeps everyone and their tomatoes and giant pumpkins and cash crops safe.

Temira’s relentless efforts keep the forecasts flowing. But it ain’t easy: each forecast takes a couple of hours. That’s where you come in. By contributing, you’re not just supporting Temira’s passion project – you’re investing in the safety and well-being of the entire Gorge community. Your financial support ensures these essential forecasts remain accessible to all, free of charge.

So please take a moment to click one of the buttons below. Donate $19.99 or more (how much does this forecast enhance your life?) and get the email in your inbox. Or just contribute enough for a cup or pound of coffee. I need coffee! Every contribution, no matter the amount, makes a difference. Help me keep this labor of love alive, so we can all commute safely, play in the river, and shred Mt. Hood with the best weather forecasts possible. Thank you!

Gorge Wind Forecast

I’m quite sleepy still this morning, even though it’s around 8am, and my Rockstar isn’t working. So, I shall do my best to give you an accurate forecast. Once again, we have a bit of a complicated picture today. A weak weather system approaches in the afternoon with a stronger system hovering offshore along with an upper level low pressure system. This setup will increase the gradient in the afternoon, but also leaves us under southerly flow with an unstable atmosphere. These factors will impact wind quality, reliability, and adherence to forecaster predictions. (that’s a joke, yo)

So, we’ll start the day with a .05 (pdx-dls) gradient and wind speeds generally in the 5-10 range. We’ll see the wind pick up to 12-15 from Stevenson to Hood River in the early afternoon. Models suggest gusty 21-24 late afternoon from Stevenson to Hood River, with gusty 24-27 after 5pm, extending eastward to Arlington. That said, atmospheric instability over the Cascades will probably impact the wind quality and duration from Swell eastward, possibly at Stevenson too. This definitely isn’t an ideal setup, but you’ll still have an opportunity to get on the water this afternoon. Flow is 454kcfs and river temp is 57 degrees. (continued after the chart)

Gorge Wind Forecast, continued.

Thursday doesn’t look much less complicated than Wednesday. A cold front crosses the Cascades during the day and a low pressure system sets up east of the Cascades in the afternoon as another low starts to approach the coast. We’ll start off Thursday with calm wind in the western Gorge and west wind at 7-11 east of The Dalles. As all that complicated stuff happens midday, we’ll see the wind pick up to 13-16 in the eastern Gorge by noon and 23-26 from Mosier to Arlington after 2pm. The western Gorge, from Stevenson to Hood River, will likely stay cloudy with sprinkles all day.

Friday sees a weak weather system move through. In addition to that, the region will be under southerly flow, setting up atmospheric instability and a chance of afternoon thunder. Yup, once again we’ll have a chance for “gusty and unreliable” wind. Expect calm conditions through 2pm followed by gusty 14-17 from Stevenson to The Dalles after 2pm.

As of right now, Saturday looks windy late afternoon (20-23?) and Sunday looks very windy (30-35?).

Random Morning Thoughts

The unconscious mind works more quickly than the conscious mind. For the purposes of this discussion, let’s take that as a given. This means that our unconscious decides how we are going to engage in a situation before our conscious mind creates an assessment. Sometimes this is good, and sometimes this is bad.

It is, I think, important to know what our unconscious is up to so that we can respond in the now, not because of things that have happened in the past. One way to “see” the unconscious is to check in with the body. Is there tension? Energy? An impulse to move? To pull away? Or perhaps there is relaxation and openness.

Our bodies are being primed by the expectations of the unconscious, and the bodily response will prime our conscious minds to react in a certain way. We gain more control over our behavior when we are attuned to this. We can take a step back and look at situations anew. Knowledge is power. Have an awesome day.

Disclaimer required by my grad school program: I am not your therapist (but I could be 40 graduate school credits from now). I am your weather forecaster. Take everything I say with a grain of salt, and consult with your actual therapist about your mental health issues. One other thing: I plan to keep doing this forecast indefinitely, even when I am a therapist.

White Sprinter Van of the Day

Road and Mountain Biking

Lewis River is open. Falls Creek is not. Everything below 450 is open on the 44 Road. Lake Branch Road has two patches of snow, each about 100′ long. Vista Ridge is open. The 88 and 23 Roads above Trout Lake are not yet clear of snow.

Upcoming Events

Today’s events start off with a free yoga class at 6:30am at Flow. There’s ping pong tonight at the Hood River Armory at 5:30 for $5, and there’s free Zumba at St. Francis House in Odell at 6.

If you use the trails up on the 44 Road, make some space tomorrow night for the 44 Trails Association fundraiser at Kickstand Coffee in Hood River at 7pm. There will be drinks, raffles, and a mountain bike movie. Speaking of 44 Road trails, everything below the 450 trail is open and clear of downed trees.

Looking at Friday, the Outfound Series Festival is at the Hood River Event Site. Lots of worshops, talks, activities and more, which could be a great way to spend a weekend that has some rain in the forecast. There’s a free half-day meditation retreat at Yoga Samadhi on Saturday from 1-5pm. It will be led by the monks from Pacific Hermitage.

Have an awesome day today!

Temira
