Meet your forecaster: Temira

For almost 30 years, Temira (they/them) has been making the most of the Gorge: riding river swell, shredding powder, and cycling all the gravel and pavement and trails. This is Temira’s playground, their gym… their life’s work.

This passion led Temira to take a vow: In 2006, Temira decided to provide the most accurate, hyper-local weather forecasts possible. Today, Temira’s forecasts have become an essential resource for thousands of skiers, snowboarders, wind sports enthusiasts and Gorge commuters. With Temira’s guidance, you can plan ahead, time your sessions perfectly, and just plain have more fun! But the story doesn’t end there.

There’s “Temira’s Awesome Travel Advisory Service” and “Valuable Advice for Gardeners Inhabiting Neighboring Areas” – the Gorge’s premier microclimate forecast and gardening information. When winter storms, extreme heat, hail, or avalanches on SR-14 and I-84 threaten, TATAS keeps everyone and their tomatoes and giant pumpkins and cash crops safe.

Temira’s relentless efforts keep the forecasts flowing. But it ain’t easy: each forecast takes a couple of hours. That’s where you come in. By contributing, you’re not just supporting Temira’s passion project – you’re investing in the safety and well-being of the entire Gorge community. Your financial support ensures these essential forecasts remain accessible to all, free of charge.

So please take a moment to click one of the buttons below. Donate $19.99 or more (how much does this forecast enhance your life?) and get the email in your inbox. Or just contribute enough for a cup or pound of coffee. I need coffee! Every contribution, no matter the amount, makes a difference. Help me keep this labor of love alive, so we can all commute safely, play in the river, and shred Mt. Hood with the best weather forecasts possible. Thank you!

Gorge Wind Forecast

Yesterday did just what it was supposed to do in the morning: 28mph near Swell with massive rollers coming down the river. Things got wonky all through the Gorge in the afternoon as a weak front moved in and thunderstorms destabilized the atmosphere, turning the wind gusty and even non-existent for periods. Today’s setup looks a bit less wonky, but less windy as well. River flow today is 446kcfs and the water temp is 57 degrees.

We’ll start off the day with 16-19 from Swell to Rufus. A weak disturbance approaches late in the day. While this will bump up the wind a bit, it will also make it gusty and unreliable. We’ll see gusty 21-24 after 1pm from Hood River to Arlington. If the clouds clear at Stevenson, that will be the steadiest place. Next best bets are the Hood River Area (not Swell), Avery and Arlington. It’s likely there will be an hour or two of the stronger wind at Swell before the wind shifts to the HR/Wunderbar area.

Gorge Wind Forecast, continued.

The Wednesday afternoon/evening weather system moves through on Thursday morning, giving us clouds and showers in the western Gorge. The wind will be light to start the day, perhaps 5-10 out of the west. As the weather system clears the Cascades early in the afternoon, the wind will pick up to 20-23 east of the low clouds. That probably means east of Hood River, all the way to Arlington. This setup is going to make for gusty wind, once again, but you’ll still be able to get on the water.

High pressure builds inland on Friday. The day starts with light westerlies and builds to 10-13 or 12-15 in the afternoon, probably the lighter side of that. As of right now, the long-range forecast is calling for strong to very strong west wind Saturday through Tuesday, with the strongest days being Sunday and Monday. There are currently no thunderstorms in the forecast to mess up the wind. =)

Mt. Hood Snow Forecast

The only snow on Mt. Hood right now is all the snow on the ground.

Random Morning Thoughts

One of my monk friends was talking last night about how our desire for things to be different can impact our life in the here and now. For example, you may walk around the house looking at all the small projects you’ve been putting off. You may focus on these projects, rather than the things you’ve already done to make your place a cozy home (whether your place is a campsite, van, or traditional home of some sort).

By focusing on what we change, we create dissatisfaction with what is. If we can shift our view, even for a few moments, to appreciate what we already have, we’ll be happier. Our anxiety level will drop. We’ll relax. This, of course, applies across all domains of life. The more we focus on what we don’t have in the now, the less we are able to appreciate what we do have.

This has very practical implications: sitting around feeling like we lack something or need to do something is more unpleasant than recognizing that we are somewhere nice and that we’ve done good things. This doesn’t mean we don’t plan for the future. It just means we keep the present goodness in mind while creating a to-do list. There’s good stuff all around you if you can rest in the moment and see it. Have an awesome day!

Disclaimer required by my grad school program: I am not your therapist (but I could be 40 graduate school credits from now). I am your weather forecaster. Take everything I say with a grain of salt, and consult with your actual therapist about your mental health issues. One other thing: I plan to keep doing this forecast indefinitely, even when I am a therapist.

Gorge Weather Forecast

It’s partly cloudy and cool this morning, and today’s temps should be a-ok for you to leave the windows open all day long. Imagine if you could do that year-round? Expect upper 50’s early and low 70’s in the afternoon. Moderate west wind. No rainbows. We’ll probably have showers or sprinkles on Thursday morning. Temps will be in the upper 50’s early and right around 70 in the afternoon. Moderate westerlies. 98% chance of rainbows. Friday looks mostly clear. Temps will be near 50 early and near 70 in the afternoon. Light west wind. No rainbows.

White Sprinter Van of the Day

Road and Mountain Biking

First, the Rowena Curves have reopened. If you are riding out there, please use lights on your bikes because the traffic has been quite hectic. Next, a reminder that many of the 44 Road trails are open: Surveyor’s, Dog, Oak Ridge, Knebal, 8-Mile, Bottle Prairie, Superconnector. If it’s not listed, it’s not open. =) No dogs on Hospital Hill. No riding Innerwoods, Dr. Who, or trails leading to the Bench, as those trails are currently closed due to logging. Post is riding great, especially GP. Lake Branch and Vista Ridge are not open. 44 Road is open. No word on the Mt. Adams rides, but they better open soon because the Mt. Adams Country Bike Tour is happening June 24th.

Upcoming Events

Today’s free community events include an early-morning yoga class at Flow at 6:30. There are sailboat races at the Hood River Marina this evening, finishing up around dusk, follow by social time on the docks. There’s community Zumba tonight at St. Francis House in Odell at 6. Tomorrow night bring the Dirty Fingers shop bike rides, with a race pace ride and a women’s only ride both leaving the shop at 5:30.

Coming up Saturday, Pacific Hermitage in White Salmon has a garden party at 1. There’s a half-day meditation retreat with the monks the following Saturday afternoon at 1pm at Pacific Hermitage. All Oregon State Parks are free on Saturday, and there’s a beginner’s table tennis clinic at the Hood River Armory on Sunday.

Have an awesome day today!

Temira
