Mt. Hood Snow Forecast
Saturday is starting off overcast on Mt. Hood. And before I get into the forecast, I’d like to remind you that my birthday is today, and that I love birthday cards! They can arrive late, and they’re even better. PO Box 841, Hood River, Oregon 97031. In an interesting twist, the sounding model is suggesting all snow on the mountain today, but rising temps and the 850mb temp model are suggesting we see rain. It’s quite difficult to guess what’s going to happen, but I can tell you that the falling snow, if it stays snow, will be quite wet! The snow level today will ostensibly be at the surface, but temps will climb to 32 degrees all the way up to 8000′ during the day. After 4pm, the snow level will slowly fall to 1000′. Between 7am and 4pm today, we’ll see 1”+ water value (WV) of mixed snow, wet snow, sleet, and possibly some rain. We’ll see another .2-.3” WV between 4pm Sunday and 4am Monday, for 2-3” of snow. Wind today will be S 10 early, rising to SW 30 in the afternoon and turning to WSW 40 in the evening, dropping to W 25 after midnight. Continued after the chart…

Mt. Hood Snow Forecast, continued…
Monday brings light snow flurries in the morning, a foggy break midday, and more snow in the evening. The snow level will fluctuate between 500′ and 1500′ during the day before dropping down to 0′-500′ overnight. We’ll see .2” WV between 4am and 4pm, for 2-3” of dry snow. We’ll see another .4” overnight, for 4-6” of dry snow. Wind on Monday will be W 25 in the morning, turning to SW10-15 in the afternoon and rising to WSW 30 after midnight.

Mt. Hood Snow Forecast, finished
Tuesday looks snowy in the morning, but the track of the evening storm system is still shifting a lot. That makes it hard to be precise with this forecast. Anyway, the snow level will be at the surface all day long on Tuesday. As of right now, it looks like the mountain will see .4-.5” WV between 4am and 4pm, for 5-6” of dry snow. The evening system has been all over the place the last couple of days, varying from a few tenths to a couple inches of moisture. Therefore, I shall say nothing at this time. Wind on Tuesday will be out of the WSW in the morning, but a deepening cold poll is likely to turn the wind easterly in the afternoon. That has all sorts of snowy implications for the lowland forecast, so stay tuned to that too!
Gorge Wind Forecast
East wind at 60 this morning holds through the daylight hours. It backs off to 45-55 by 4pm and 15-20 around 10pm, going light and variable overnight. Monday looks light and variable except for a short period of E 20-25 late in the evening. Tuesday brings light east wind to start with E 40 in the afternoon and evening. Wednesday looks like E 40 in the morning and E 10-15 in the afternoon.

Random Morning Thoughts
I got completely distracted making myself a green bean casserole for birthday breakfast, and now it’s getting late. So, I shall inspire you with a few oddities from the last couple of days and sign off to go play.
First, I went ice skating at the Hook yesterday. I knew this was (relatively) safe because an ice hockey game was played at the Hook yesterday. Another ice hockey match happened on the pond under the overpass at Mosier. In addition to the skaters, someone was out ice-windsurfing at both the Hook and the Nichols Boat Basin.
In an even stranger twist, I was able to find someone to sharpen my ice skates within two hours of a friend giving me a pair of ice skates. You gotta love small town living. While this weather is almost certainly a big pain in the ass for many of you, take a moment to delight in the craziness. Have an awesome day.
Disclaimer required by my grad school program: I am not your therapist (but I could be 40 graduate school credits from now). I am your weather forecaster. Take everything I say with a grain of salt, and consult with your actual therapist about your mental health issues. One other thing: I plan to keep doing this forecast indefinitely, even when I am a therapist.
Gorge Weather Forecast
Expect a cloudy and cold start to the day with heavy snow starting up around 9am. It’s possible we’ll switch to a light glaze of freezing rain overnight. Expect temps in the upper teens early and mid 20’s later. 5-7” of snow today, ending by 6pm, possibly followed by .1” of ice. East wind. No rainbows. Monday is really tough to call. Given the stubbornness of the cold air and lack of anything powerful scouring it out, let’s say we’ll most likely stay just below freezing all day. We’ll see .1-.2” of freezing rain or sleet during the day. Another round of moisture hits around 8:30 Monday night, for 2-3” of snow overnight. Light and variable wind. No rainbows. Tuesday looks snowy all day, especially in the western Gorge, and that’s followed by another round of snow Tuesday night. Temps will be in the mid to upper 20’s all day. East wind. No rainbows.

Road and Mountain Biking
No, there is no biking, not unless you have a trainer bike or a gym membership. It has been pointed out to me that fat biking is available, so there’s that. There is snow kiting potential, backcountry skiing potential in the Gorge, and XC skiing available at the Twin Tunnels.
Upcoming Events
It’s really hard for me to say what events are on and off today. So, you will have to sort that out for yourself by checking in with your usual activity leader. =)
Have an awesome day today!
