Thursday. Incoming snow and ice for everyone!

Mt. Hood Snow Forecast

It’s actually warmer on Mt. Hood than many valley locations this morning. Temps are in the teens. Expect sunshine and teen-temps all day today (Thursday). East wind at 25-30 this morning becomes light and variable this afternoon. Oh, the free air freezing level, as I’m sure you’ve noticed, will be at the surface, your house, sea level, all day long. Continued after the chart…

Mt. Hood Snow Forecast, continued…

Friday looks like a repeat, but it will be much warmer on Mt. Hood than at your house. The free air freezing level will remain at the surface, but temps on the mountain will be in the mid 20’s. Head up there if you’d like to be warm. NW wind at 10 in the morning and SW wind at 10 in the afternoon.

The fun starts up again on Saturday. Clear sky early gives way to snowfall by midday and a mix of precipitation types overnight. The snow level will be at the surface in the morning (see the TATAS forecast for sea level conditions), rising to 5500′ by 10pm. We’ll see .5” WV between noon and 4pm, for 4-5” of dense new snow. We’ll see another .5-.7” WV between 4pm and 4am, some of which will likely fall as a rain-snow-sleet mix. Call it 3-5” of wet snow. Wind will be S 15 early, SSE 30 midday, and SW 30 overnight.

Mt. Hood Snow Forecast, finished

Sunday sees a second weather system move in. This will likely start as snow, turn to rain, and switch back to snow mixed with rain. The snow level will be 5500′-6000′ early, briefly dropping to 2500′ or so before rising to 6500′ mid-morning and holding at 5500′ for the rest of the day. This makes predicting the snow amounts very difficult, as temps will be borderline and the precip type will be switching. We’ll see 1.5” WV mixed precip between 4am and 4pm, for I-have-no-idea-how-much snow and rain. I do know this will make a huge mess of ice on the lifts. We’ll see another .4” WV wet snow in the afternoon and evening, for 2-4” of new. Wind on Sunday will be SW 20 early, rising to SW 30 in the afternoon and switching to WSW 30 in the evening.

Random Morning Thoughts

I’m uncertain how my life appears to outsiders. My life is definitely charmed on many levels, and for this I am filled with gratitude. On the other hand, like many of you, I have struggled for much of my life with emotional pain. Years of meditative practice have led me to believe that much of this pain is of my own making. I’ve also learned that equally delightful states of peace and happiness exist within me, and that these states can be cultivated, encouraged to arise more frequently.

Along this path, I’ve learned that one think I do to cause myself pain is to rush. I hurry to get to the next task, worrying that there isn’t enough time in the day. While this is often the case, I also frequently complete my tasks with time to spare.

When I have this free time, I scramble to find something to do. Rather than relaxing and enjoying the unexpected spaciousness over a slow cup of tea, I rush to cram in more activities, more achievements, maybe even starting something new, adding to my long-term stress load.

Maybe this endless scramble to do more resonates with you? You, like me, have probably trained your nervous system for constant motion. You’ve trained in a fear of stopping. Next time you notice you’re rushing, intentionally slow down, even for just a footstep or two. Notice your reaction.

Although you’ve trained yourself to feel like there’s never enough time, there’s probably more time than you think, if you only slow down to notice it. You’re awesome. Have an awesome day.

Gorge Weather Forecast

It’s a beautiful sunny day. Temps will be in the single digits this morning and low 20’s this afternoon. East wind. No rainbows. Friday starts out butt-ass cold. Temps will be near zero early and in the mid 20’s in the afternoon. Sunshine, east wind, and no rainbows. Saturday starts off cold and clear, quickly becoming cloudy and snowy by 1pm. We’ll see 5-7” of snow in Hood River by Sunday morning, quite possibly transitioning to ice overnight. See the TATAS forecast for other locations on I-84 and for the complete horror story of this storm. East wind. No rainbows. Sunday looks like a total shitshow with snow in the morning and freezing rain for the rest of the day. Temps will be in the upper 20’s to low 30’s. There’s a slight chance we’ll warm above freezing in late afternoon, but probably not. East wind. No rainbows.

Road and Mountain Biking

No, there is no biking, not unless you have a trainer bike or a gym membership. It has been pointed out to me that fat biking is available, so there’s that. There is snow kiting potential, backcountry skiing potential in the Gorge, and XC skiing available at the Twin Tunnels.

Upcoming Events

There’s community yoga at 6pm at Samadhi, Tai Chi at Our Savior Church in Bingen at 6:30, and Zumba at St. Francis House in Odell at 6:30. Coming up tomorrow morning, it’s the f***ing cold 10 Speed Coffee Run, where that free coffee and donut is going to feel oh-so-good after a single-digit 4 mile jog.

Have an awesome day today!
