Tuesday. Bye-bye lowland snow.

Mt. Hood Snow Forecast As predicted, it rained a lot on Mt. Hood last night. Mixed precipitation continues early this morning but should switch over to snow before daybreak. We should see a few inches of orographic (terrain-enhanced) snowfall today before the sky clears this afternoon. The snow level today will be 6000′ early, 4500′…

Meet your forecaster: Temira

For almost 30 years, Temira (they/them) has been making the most of the Gorge: riding river swell, shredding powder, and cycling all the gravel and pavement and trails. This is Temira’s playground, their gym… their life’s work.

This passion led Temira to take a vow: In 2006, Temira decided to provide the most accurate, hyper-local weather forecasts possible. Today, Temira’s forecasts have become an essential resource for thousands of skiers, snowboarders, wind sports enthusiasts and Gorge commuters. With Temira’s guidance, you can plan ahead, time your sessions perfectly, and just plain have more fun! But the story doesn’t end there.

There’s “Temira’s Awesome Travel Advisory Service” and “Valuable Advice for Gardeners Inhabiting Neighboring Areas” – the Gorge’s premier microclimate forecast and gardening information. When winter storms, extreme heat, hail, or avalanches on SR-14 and I-84 threaten, TATAS keeps everyone and their tomatoes and giant pumpkins and cash crops safe.

Temira’s relentless efforts keep the forecasts flowing. But it ain’t easy: each forecast takes a couple of hours. That’s where you come in. By contributing, you’re not just supporting Temira’s passion project – you’re investing in the safety and well-being of the entire Gorge community. Mt. Hood Snow Forecast

As predicted, it rained a lot on Mt. Hood last night. Mixed precipitation continues early this morning but should switch over to snow before daybreak. We should see a few inches of orographic (terrain-enhanced) snowfall today before the sky clears this afternoon. The snow level today will be 6000′ early, 4500′ around daybreak, and 1500′ in the afternoon and evening. That’s going to snap the snow and make it rather icy, given all the rain last night. Sharpen your edges. Anyway, we’ll see .2-.5” water value (WV) between this morning and noon, giving us 2-5” of new snow before the sun comes out. Wind today will be W 45 in the morning and NW 45 in the afternoon. That’s going to slow down those high-speed lifts. Continued after the chart…

Mt. Hood Snow Forecast, finished

Friday looks very interesting, as an upper level low crosses eastward to the south of Mt. Hood. The actual path of this storm track is going to make a huge difference in snow amounts and snow quality. We’re going to have to wait until we get closer to actually make a call on what happens. The last similar system dumped 2-4” of snow in Portland, 5-6” in Hood River, and 12-18” in Bend, with 5-7” on Mt. Hood. Now, I’m not saying it’s necessarily going to snow in Portland (it looks too warm), but I’m hesitant to predict a snow amount this far out.

Models are predicting an area of lighter wind from Mosier to The Dalles. Wednesday starts with E 30-35 and picks up to E 40-45 in the afternoon. Thursday looks like light easterlies before dawn, light and variable wind midday, and light westerlies in the afternoon.

Random Morning Thoughts

Life’s pretty complicated, right? It seems like most decisions we make and most actions we take have multiple layers. For detail-oriented people, those layers can seem innumerable, endless, overwhelming. This proliferation of decisions to make and actions to take can lead us to be stuck, not making decisions or moving forward.

There’s really nothing surprising about this. For a very, very, very long time, we lived simple lives. We wandered with the seasons, stored foods, hunted… Our tribal legacies taught us what would happen from season to season and year to year. We weren’t forced into endless anticipation and endless decision making. We just aren’t wired for modern life.

Yeah, take a deep breath. It’s not your fault!

So, what do we do about this? We can have an idea of the big picture of where we’re headed, but if the path seems overwhelming, we can concentrate on one piece at a time. Breaking things down into little pieces makes them more manageable. You wouldn’t stick an entire cow or tofurkey into your mouth, would you? No, you’d cut it up. In the same vein, you can chop your problems into bite-sized pieces. You can even write those pieces down and check them off, giving yourself a concrete sense of accomplishment as you work towards the final goal (and sometimes those goals are very simple – like visiting a new restaurant).

That is it. Have an awesome day, awesome people.

Gorge Weather Forecast

Expect a rainy start to Tuesday with a quick transition to scattered showers with sunbreaks. Temps will be in the mid 30’s early and the low 40’s later. Strong west wind after 10am, 76% chance of rainbows. Watch out for icy roads tonight. Wednesday probably will start off with the Nothing, but will likely clear up quickly if the models are right. Temps will be in the low 30’s early and the upper 30’s in the afternoon. East wind. No rainbows. Thursday starts off partly cloudy and turns cloudy in the afternoon with light rain possible in the evening. Temps will be in the upper 20’s early and the low 40’s in the afternoon. Light wind early goes light westerly in the afternoon. Models are showing some weird stuff happening Friday afternoon into Friday evening, giving us an off-chance of some snow Friday into Saturday. Stay tuned.
