Mt. Hood Snow Forecast Today’s models runs have gone gangbusters on the precipitation totals compared to yesterday’s model run. That’s due, in a large part, to the fact that the models have changed their minds on the area of highest precipitation, moving it over Mt. Hood rather than the lowlands. Meet your forecaster: Temira

For almost 30 years, Temira (they/them) has been making the most of the Gorge: riding river swell, shredding powder, and cycling all the gravel and pavement and trails. This is Temira’s playground, their gym… their life’s work.

This passion led Temira to take a vow: In 2006, Temira decided to provide the most accurate, hyper-local weather forecasts possible. Today, Temira’s forecasts have become an essential resource for thousands of skiers, snowboarders, wind sports enthusiasts and Gorge commuters. With Temira’s guidance, you can plan ahead, time your sessions perfectly, and just plain have more fun! But the story doesn’t end there.

There’s “Temira’s Awesome Travel Advisory Service” and “Valuable Advice for Gardeners Inhabiting Neighboring Areas” – the Gorge’s premier microclimate forecast and gardening information. When winter storms, extreme heat, hail, or avalanches on SR-14 and I-84 threaten, TATAS keeps everyone and their tomatoes and giant pumpkins and cash crops safe.

Temira’s relentless efforts keep the forecasts flowing. But it ain’t easy: each forecast takes a couple of hours. That’s where you come in. By contributing, you’re not just supporting Temira’s passion project – you’re investing in the safety and well-being of the entire Gorge community. Mt. Hood Snow Forecast

Today’s models runs have gone gangbusters on the precipitation totals compared to yesterday’s model run. That’s due, in a large part, to the fact that the models have changed their minds on the area of highest precipitation, moving it over Mt. Hood rather than the lowlands. Fingers crossed that this plays out in reality. Along with the ambiguity today in precip amounts, we’re going to have a rapidly fluctuating snow level that will impact the lightness of being of the snow. Okay, disclaimers out of the way, here’s the forecast. Continued after the chart…

Mt. Hood Snow Forecast, continued…

The snow level starts near 4500′ today, rising to 5000′ mid-morning before dropping to 2000′ this afternoon and jumping back to 5500′ between 7pm and midnight or so. After that, the snow level will fall back to 2500′. Models currently predict Mt. Hood will receive 1.5” water value (WV) between 7am and 4pm. That’s followed by .3” WV between 4pm and 10p, and then another round of heavy precip, 1.2” WV or so, through 4am on Friday. That’s a total of 3” of water value. This seems a bit overblown to me, but let’s roll with it for now!

Okay, so what’s that going to mean for snow? Let’s call it 10-16” between this morning and 4pm. If that’s really going to happen, the front needs to move its butt east pretty fast. I’m thinking 5-8” is more likely. Anyway, the 1.5” WV between 4pm and tomorrow is more complicated, and may be mixed with rain or snain between 7pm and midnight. Let’s call that 8-12” of dense snow topped with fluffy snow. Wind today will be SW 30 early, WSW 25 midday, and SW 40 overnight with much stronger wind up high. Total snowfall in the 24 hour period: 18-24” if you like the models, 13-20” if you’re a doubter like me.

Mt. Hood Snow Forecast, finished

Friday brings snow flurries during the day with steadier wet snow or perhaps a mixed bag overnight. The snow level will be 2500′ early, 4000′ in the afternoon, and 5500′ overnight. We’ll see trace accumulations during the day and .3” WV overnight. Call that 1-2” of wet snow. Wind Friday will be WSW 30 early, fading to SW 10 in the afternoon and rising to SW 25 overnight.

Saturday sees more snow with a dropping snow level that starts at 5500′ and finishes up at 2000′. That 5500′ is borderline, so we may start the day with snain or mixed precip, but we’ll be seeing snowfall by 7am. Approximately .6” WV falls between 4am and 4pm, for 3-5” of new snow. Another inch falls overnight in flurry form. Wind on Saturday will be SW 25 early, fading during the day and becoming W 10 in the afternoon. Sunday looks clear and cold with moderate to strong west wind.

Gorge Wind Forecast

We do have some easterlies at 20-25 this morning at Rooster, but they’ll fade to very light west wind by 10am. Friday looks light and variable all day with east wind at 15-20 after sunset. Saturday looks light and variable all day. Sunday’s forecast currently calls for W 24-27 and Monday’s forecast calls for W 26-30, fading in the afternoon.

Random Morning Thoughts

It’s Thanksgiving today, and many of you will be headed home for your yearly dose of weird family dynamics. Others will be headed to gatherings where controversial topics of conversation will arise. You know, conversations about the merits of turkey vs. turducken vs. Tofurkey. People may want to engage you in debate about your stance on slaughtering innocent large delicious birds for the sole purpose of filling your belly. Or they may want to involve you in an easier conversation, say, one about politics.

While some people enjoy a good debate or shouting match over the holiday table, many others do not. What strategy do you have in place for understanding someone who holds different views, values and opinions than you? If you’re bold and self-controlled, you can opt for understanding their underlying interests and needs. For example, your Tofurkey-loving cousin may value all life to such an extent that eating an animal is unconscionable and brings up massive guilt. You, on the other hand, may believe that turkeys aren’t self-aware, and are thus more like plants than animals. From this stance, you can understand the positions better.

Another oft-employed strategy might be to change the subject. “So, anyway, what are you grateful for on this Thanksgiving…?” Not only does that change the subject, it might lead to a deeper conversation about the other person’s life.

The only wrong way to head into a potentially high-conflict Thanksgiving is to have no plan. From that space, you’ll be reacting instead of responding. So, head to your meal with a plan. Commit to taking a pause between listening and replying. And remember that we’re all just doing the best we can on each day of our lives. Have an awesome day, and happy Thanksgiving.

Gorge Weather Forecast

It’s a cloudy and showery start to Thanksgiving, and the only thing that will change in the weather is an intensification of the rainfall later today. Temps will be in the low 40’s early and the mid 40’s in the afternoon. Cold, dark and soggy is today’s mantra. Light wind. 0.5% chance of rainbows. Friday looks mostly cloudy and showery all day long. Temps will be in the mid 40’s all day. Light wind. 3% chance of rainbows. Saturday looks mostly cloudy with showers and sprinkles. Temps will be in the upper 30’s early and the mid 40’s in the afternoon. Light wind. 7% chance of rainbows.

Road and Mountain Biking

No, really. Post Canyon and Whoopdee are too muddy to ride. Consider riding the gravel roads instead. There are lots of them around here, and you won’t be doing trail damage if you ride on the roads.

Upcoming Events

Today is the annual Turkey Trot, benefiting the Mosier Community School. The run takes place Thursday morning on the Twin Tunnels Trail, Hood River side. More information is available here, including the fact that you get $5 off registration if you ride your bike or run to the event. If you’d like to add even more jogging (and calories) to your life, Friday morning at 7am is the Kickstand Coffee Run. Meet at the coffee shop at 7am for a free cup of coffee and a donut. Well, you have to jog 4 miles first…

Have an awesome day today!
