Mt. Hood Snow Forecast
It’s really starting to look likely that we’ll have both Timberline and Meadows open this weekend. Although Skibowl should get some snow out of these systems, I’m not sure they’re going to get quite enough to start running lifts. That said, I’ll be watching my inbox for a press release from Hans! Anyway, it’s Tuesday, and you can expect a partly cloudy day on the mountain followed by snow this evening. The snow level will be 4000′ early, 5500′ midday, 5000′ when the precip hits, and 2000′ after midnight. We’ll see .7” water value (WV) or so between 7pm and 4am, giving us 5-7” of new snow at 5000′. Wind today will be light this morning, slowly picking up to S 15 this afternoon and turning to W 35 after midnight. Continued after the chart…

Mt. Hood Snow Forecast, continued…
Wednesday looks mostly cloudy with snow flurries or light snowfall all day and all night. The snow level will be 2000-2500′ all day, rising to 4000′ after midnight. We’ll see .1-.3” WV during the 24 hour period, for 1-3” of new snow. Wind on Wednesday will be WSW 30-35 for most of the day, turning to the SW after midnight.
Thanksgiving day looks interesting. Lots of moisture is predicted, but models aren’t agreeing on the snow level. The sounding model suggests the snow level will fluctuate between 4000′ and 5500′, but the 850mb temp forecast suggests a peak snow level closer to 6500′ overnight. Here’s my best guess: between 4am and 4pm, we’ll see .7-1.0” WV, some of which may fall as snain (very wet snow). That’ll give us 5-7” of new snow. We’ll see another .5-.9” WV between 4pm Thursday and 4am Friday. We may see a rain/snow mix at some point during this time period, but we may not. Let’s call it 4-7” of new snow. Wind on Thursday will be SW 25 for much of the day and SW 40+ overnight. Wind speeds above tree line will be much stronger.

Mt. Hood Snow Forecast, finished
Friday looks cooler with less precipitation. The snow level will be 4500′ early and 2500′ in the afternoon. We’ll see .1-.2” WV, for a couple inches of new snow. Wind will be SW 30 early and light and variable in the afternoon.
The long-range forecast suggests we’ll see another wet system Saturday afternoon into Sunday with a 5000′ snow level. Another system arrives Sunday night through Monday night with a 5500′ → 4000′ snow level. Seems like a pretty good chance we’ll have a lot more terrain open for shredding this weekend and next week, doesn’t it?
Gorge Wind Forecast
We have east wind at 25-30 at Iwash (Rooster) Rock this morning and 20-25 at Steven’s Locks. You can expect that to continue until 1pm or so, after which the wind will fade, eventually switching directions after sunset. Wednesday brings west wind at 7-10 in the morning with 12-15 from Stevenson to The Dalles from late morning on through late afternoon. Thursday looks like E 15-20 becoming light and variable in the afternoon. In an interesting twist, the long-range models are suggesting a 30-35mph west wind day on Monday. I wouldn’t trust that, but it’s worth watching just in case. One small problem with that is the quantity of rainfall forecast between now and then – the water will likely be filled with obstacles…

Random Morning Thoughts
Thanksgiving is just a couple of days away, and I’d like to encourage you to remember the “strays” in your life. You know, those single folks without family. It’s likely you’ve assumed your friends have somewhere to go on Thanksgiving. It’s likely that’s an erroneous assumption.
Strays often don’t want to impose on intimate family gatherings. They may hesitate to ask for an invite, not wanting to put you in the uncomfortable position of having to refuse. Because of the dynamics, strays often end up alone and isolated during the holidays.
I’d like to encourage you to contact the strays in your life during this holiday season. Invite them over for your celebrations. Invite them out for dinner. Let them know you care. There’s a lot of baggage that goes along with being a stray during the holidays. Help your friends carry that baggage by sending some love their way. Be awesome. Have an awesome day.
Disclaimer required by my grad school program: I am not your therapist (but I could be 51 graduate school credits from now). I am your weather forecaster. Take everything I say with a grain of salt, and consult with your actual therapist about your mental health issues. One other thing: I plan to keep doing this forecast indefinitely, even when I am a therapist.
Gorge Weather Forecast
The Nothing is intense and hungry this morning. It’s swallowed all of Burdoin Mountain and all of Underwood Mountain. If this keeps up, there will be nothing left of the Gorge by the end of winter. Expect Nothing for most of the day followed by mostly cloudy sky, rain, and a chance of sunbreaks from mid-afternoon on. Temps will be in the mid 30’s early and the low 50’s this afternoon. Wednesday looks showery and mostly cloudy all day long. Temps will be in the upper 30’s early and the upper 40’s in the afternoon. Light westerlies. 99% chance of rainbows. Thanksgiving starts out cloudy and turns rainy for the rest of the day. Temps will be in the upper 30’s early and the mid 40’s in the afternoon. Light easterlies. 3% chance of rainbows.

White Sprinter Van of the Day
Road and Mountain Biking
No, really. Post Canyon and Whoopdee are too muddy to ride. Consider riding the gravel roads instead. There are lots of them around here, and you won’t be doing trail damage if you ride on the roads.
Upcoming Events
It’s Tuesday. There’s free yoga at Flow at 4:30 and at HAVEN (Strong Women Yoga) in The Dalles at 5. There’s pickup touch rugby at 5 at the Hood River Marina Park. There’s $12 Prime Rib at Cebu tonight from 5pm to 9pm. At 6:30 this evening, there’s meditation at Yoga Samadhi led by community members until the monks return. This remains, and most likely always will, my favorite activity of the week.
Thursday is the annual Turkey Trot, benefiting the Mosier Community School. The run takes place Thursday morning on the Twin Tunnels Trail, Hood River side. More information is available here, including the fact that you get $5 off registration if you ride your bike or run to the event.
Have an awesome day today!
