The snow level today will be 7500′ with this morning’s system and 9000′ with this evening’s system, falling back to 7500′ after midnight. We’ll see .2” of rain or so this morning. Mt. Hood Snow Forecast, continued…
Tuesday starts off with a few sprinkles, turns clear midday, and sees snow, yes snow, overnight. The snow level will be 7500′ in the morning, 4500′ when the snow hits, and 2000′ after midnight. We’ll see approximately .5-.6” water value (WV) between 1pm Tuesday and 4am Friday. That should work out to 5-7” of new snow at 5000′, definitely enough for that social media blitz we’ve talked about before. You know… picnic table photos and such. Wind on Tuesday will be WSW 35 in the morning and SW 15-20 in the afternoon and evening.

Mt. Hood Snow Forecast, finished
Wednesday sees intermittent snow flurries all day long. The snow level will be 2000′ early and 3000′ in the afternoon. Given the forecast of light wind, I don’t expect we’ll see a lot of additional snowfall on Wednesday. Call it .1-.2” WV for 1-2” of new snow. Wind on Wednesday will be W 15 in the morning and light and variable in the afternoon.
Looks like we’ll see partly cloudy sky on Thursday morning followed by clear sky on Thursday afternoon. The free air freezing level will be 2000′ early and 3000′ in the afternoon. Light and variable wind in the morning turns to W 10 in the afternoon. The next weather system is forecast for the wee hours of Saturday morning. This will be a warm, wet system riding over the top of cold sub-arctic air from the east. Although it’s possible we’ll see snow to start this out, it’s more likely we’ll see a shot of freezing rain before a switch to plain-old-rain.
Gorge Wind Forecast
The Fall of No Westerlies continues today with light westerlies at 10-13 or less this morning and light and variable wind this afternoon and evening. Tuesday sees a break in the no-west-wind. Expect W 18-22 through the whole Gorge in the morning, with the wind action limited to the Mosier to Maryhill stretch in the afternoon. Wednesday looks light and variable and so does Thursday. We’ll have nuking (and cold) east wind on Friday and Saturday.

Random Morning Thoughts
Many Americans are raised in mainstream American culture. Beliefs of that culture include the idea that each of us stands alone, each of us is responsible for our own successes or failures, and the idea that we need to rely on our inner strength, rather than the strength of our communities.
Internalizing such beliefs leaves us less likely to reach out for support. In addition, we find ourselves blaming people for their own life situations. We find ourselves shaming, rather than supporting.
Individualism is a cultural construction. Our nervous systems were created in tribal, communal systems. Pre-industrialization, we relied on tight-knit networks of support to raise ourselves and our children. Despite our industrial isolation, our nervous systems still crave the support of other individuals and the love of a community. Because of industrial isolation, we shame ourselves for craving these connections.
I don’t have any power to change this, but I’m offering you permission to go against your cultural programming. It’s okay to want the support of others. It’s okay to crave that support. It’s even okay to need that support. Your inner strength won’t be compromised by that. Instead, it’ll be solidified by your knowledge that you aren’t alone. Be well. You’re awesome. Have an awesome day.

Road and Mountain Biking
Despite the look of utter gloom out there this morning, we’ve only received a tenth of an inch of rain since midnight. However, that’s enough to make Post too wet to ride. With rain or sprinkles in the forecast for the next 48 hours, it will remain too wet to ride. You’ll have to try Whoopdee or Syncline instead. Or try road biking in The Dalles at the Petersburg Loop.
