Sunday. November: nicer than October. Enjoy!

Mt. Hood Snow Forecast I’m glad that I’m not the person responsible for the weather, because I don’t have anything exciting to say about the Mt. Hood weather for the next week or so. But then again, it’s going to be nearly 70 degrees and sunny in the valley, so maybe a lack of snowfall…

Meet your forecaster: Temira

For almost 30 years, Temira (they/them) has been making the most of the Gorge: riding river swell, shredding powder, and cycling all the gravel and pavement and trails. This is Temira’s playground, their gym… their life’s work.

This passion led Temira to take a vow: In 2006, Temira decided to provide the most accurate, hyper-local weather forecasts possible. Today, Temira’s forecasts have become an essential resource for thousands of skiers, snowboarders, wind sports enthusiasts and Gorge commuters. With Temira’s guidance, you can plan ahead, time your sessions perfectly, and just plain have more fun! But the story doesn’t end there.

There’s “Temira’s Awesome Travel Advisory Service” and “Valuable Advice for Gardeners Inhabiting Neighboring Areas” – the Gorge’s premier microclimate forecast and gardening information. When winter storms, extreme heat, hail, or avalanches on SR-14 and I-84 threaten, TATAS keeps everyone and their tomatoes and giant pumpkins and cash crops safe.

Temira’s relentless efforts keep the forecasts flowing. But it ain’t easy: each forecast takes a couple of hours. That’s where you come in. By contributing, you’re not just supporting Temira’s passion project – you’re investing in the safety and well-being of the entire Gorge community. Your financial support ensures these essential forecasts remain accessible to all, free of charge.

Mt. Hood Snow Forecast

I’m glad that I’m not the person responsible for the weather, because I don’t have anything exciting to say about the Mt. Hood weather for the next week or so. But then again, it’s going to be nearly 70 degrees and sunny in the valley, so maybe a lack of snowfall isn’t such a bad thing! The snow level Sunday will be between 5500′ and 6000′ all day, rising to 10,000′ by Monday morning. Sunday’s wind will be WSW 20-25 early, fading to SW 10-15 mid-morning and holding for the rest of the day. Continued after the chart…

Mt. Hood Snow Forecast, finished

A weak weather system swings through late Tuesday or early in the morning on Wednesday. This will bring just a few sprinkles or showers to Mt. Hood. Expect clouds and rain early in the morning with sunshine by late morning. The snow level will be 12,000′ early, falling to 9000′ when the weather system pushes through. We’ll see, at most, .1-.2” of rain. That’ll be followed by sun for the rest of the day. Wind on Wednesday will be SW 20ish early, turning to WSW 25 mid-morning.

Although earlier model runs suggested significant rainfall on both Wednesday and Friday, the models are now trending drier. The next system is currently forecast to swing through late Friday or early Saturday. It looks too warm to bring snow.

Random Morning Thoughts

As you may have heard, there’s an election coming up. What concerns me most about this election cycle is not the immediate results. Instead, it’s the long-term ramifications of the use of fear to drive votes. Open conversations that fan fear lead to changes in brain functioning. Operating from a state of fear, we simply cannot make rational, open-minded decisions.

In this election cycle, we’ve been told we should be afraid of immigrants, Mexican-Americans, Syrians, nebulous “terrorists”, people wearing Trump shirts, people wearing Hillary shirts, Jews (that’s me), transgender individuals, the rich, the poor, corporations, the media, men, women, etc… Whether we believe these suggestions or not, our mind becomes primed to fear Those Who are not Like Us.

When we fear, our amygdala – the fight/flight/freeze part of our brains – is activated. To a lesser or greater extent depending on our past experiences, we go into fight or flight, survival, mode. From here, survival becomes our priority, not connection with others. Rather than seeking to understand, we seek to fight, to defend, to protect ourselves. We lose our ability to be rational human beings. We descend into the animal kingdom, where the mantra “survival of the fittest” drives our actions.

Fear, as I’m sure you’ve experienced, leads us to do things we regret. Rhetoric that inspires fear will inevitably incite violence, or at least a dire lack of compassion. Come next Wednesday, our job as humans, as people who care about other people, is to end the cycle of fear. We need to soothe each other, settling our fight/flight instinct and bringing our thinking brains back online. Long-term, fear will do more damage than any politician. What’s your plan for settling our animal souls and bringing out our humanity? You’re awesome enough to help us heal. Have an awesome day.

Disclaimer required by my grad school program: I am not your therapist (but I could be 51 graduate school credits from now). I am your weather forecaster. Gorge Weather Forecast

It’s a cloudy morning in the Gorge, and it’ll probably stay that way all day. At least things look mostly dry! Expect temps in the upper 40’s early and the upper 50’s in the afternoon. Light wind. 2% chance of rainbows. Monday is likely to start off with the Nothing. Hopefully it’ll burn off in the afternoon, leaving us with sunshine. Temps will be in the mid 40’s early and the upper 50’s in the afternoon. Light east wind. No rainbows. Tuesday almost certainly starts off with a massive Nothing as temps in the valley sit in the 40’s and temps on the mountain climb into the 50’s. The nothing should burn off in the afternoon, leaving us with high clouds due to an approaching warm but dry frontal system. Light wind. No rainbows.

Road and Mountain Biking

I went for a jog in Post Canyon yesterday afternoon, and it was just a little slick. You’d be better off riding the Whoopdee Trail or something at Syncline. Even better would be helping out at the work party at the Whoopdee this morning at 9am and then doing some riding afterwards. In road biking news, you can expect light and variable wind and very little rain today, especially in the afternoon.

Upcoming Events

Today’s community events include free or by donation yoga at Samadhi at 9, Pure Yoga in The Dalles at 4, and Pure Yoga in Hood River at 6. There’s pickup touch rugby at the Mosier School at 3pm and pickup Ultimate at Westside Elementary at 5pm. There’s a work party on the Whoopdee trail from 9am to 1pm. Make sure that you’ve reset your clocks so you make it to these events on time!

Have an awesome day today!
