When I woke up (after 8am, my goodness!) the iWindsurf said there was an easterly gradient. The clouds are moving from west to east, so if that gradient hasn’t shifted yet, I’ll eat my own socks! Anyway, a 969mb low pressure system is hanging out off Vancouver Island this morning. As it moves inland the wind will pick up in the eastern Gorge. This is most definitely not an ideal setup, so the wind is going to be gusty and unreliable. That said, the models insist we’ll see a period of 26-30+ from 2pm to 6pm or so east of Maryhill. Don’t expect much between Steven’s Locks and Maryhill today – the gradient will be more conducive to southerly synoptic-scale wind than westerly wind. Continued after the chart…

Gorge wind forecast, continued…
Saturday looks interesting weather-wise as the remains of Typhoon Songda move into western Washington in the afternoon. We’ll start off the day with light east wind. As the 972mb low moves off the OR/WA coast, we’ll see easterlies at 30-40 near Rooster Rock with east wind at 10mph in the rest of the Gorge. Or maybe more. Or maybe less. Anyway, the storm will move onshore (unless the forecast changes) after 5pm, turning Gorge wind onshore. As an aside, I should mention that this setup is just right for a massive windstorm in the Portland area.
Sunday brings light and variable wind all day. Monday starts out light and variable and turns weakly westerly in the afternoon.

Mt. Hood Snow Forecast
I believe there’s been some on-and-off wet snowfall around 5000′ on Mt. Hood in the last 24 hours. That’s all fine and dandy because we like snow. However, the next three days are bringing in lots of moisture with relatively high snow levels.
The snow level to start Friday will be around 6500′, rising to 8000′ in the afternoon and falling to 6000′ overnight. We’ll see around 1” rain or mixed precip between 8am and 5pm followed by another 1” of mixed precip overnight. Wind today will be in the SW 30-40 range most of the day.
Saturday is going to be quite wet on the hill, although models aren’t really showing that this morning. The snow level will be 6500′ early and 9000′ in the afternoon and evening. We’ll see several inches of rain on the mountain Saturday along with SW wind at 40-50mph.
Sunday sees the snow level drop as low as 5500′ before rising to 6500′ in the evening. We’ll just see on-and-off mixed precip showers (more likely wet snow). Wind will be SW 30 early and SW 15 in the afternoon. No big snowstorms are in the forecast.
Random Morning Thoughts
Today’s suggested happiness activity from Gorge Happiness is to wear your favorite thing. While I love this idea, I’m not quite sure that I want to be out in public in my Seahawks fleece onesie on a day when my team isn’t playing.
Picking a favorite of anything can be a bit problematic. The idea of favorites rests on the idea that there are hierarchies into which we can arrange things from better to worse. In many cases, the world is more nuanced than this. For example, my ‘Hawks onesie can be my favorite piece of clothing on gameday, but my favorite piece of clothing last night in the Portland downpour was my Goretex onesie.
When we pigeonhole ourselves into answering the favorites question, we discount the good things about the discarded choices. We subtly diminish our affection for That Which is not Favorite. Or Who is not BFF. Or Where is the Best Place.
So, the next time you have to place someone or something at the very top of a list, take a moment to appreciate the not-bests too. Doing so won’t reduce your connection with your number one – this isn’t a zero-sum game. Instead, shift your view to appreciating your favorite aspect of everything that crosses your path. That will make your world and you even more awesome than you already are. Have an awesome day!

Gorge Weather Forecast
It’s mostly cloudy out there this morning with a few scattered sunbreaks. This is ideal rainbow weather, although I haven’t seen one yet. Expect showers this morning with moderate to heavy rain tonight (we had just over 1” of rain yesterday!). Temps will be in the upper 40’s early and the low 60’s in the afternoon. Light wind, 99.99999999% chance of rainbows.
Saturday looks very wet for almost the entire day with showers after 5pm. Temps will be in the upper 40’s early and the upper 50’s in the afternoon. Light wind will be followed by easterlies of some sort. 4% chance of rainbows. Sunday looks sprinkly with periods of light rain. Temps will be in the upper 40’s early and the upper 50’s in the afternoon. Light wind. 23% chance of rainbows.

Road and Mountain Biking
I went for a jog in Post Canyon yesterday. The puddles were as big as I’ve ever seen them. Post, in other words, is too wet to ride. So is Whoopdee. I suspect Hospital Hill is too wet too. Syncline’s a possibility today, and so is road biking. You’re not riding Saturday, but Syncline might be an option Sunday.

I’m not really in a mood to list events today, so I’m not going to. =)
