Thursday. Wet.

Watching the pouring rain and grayness outside, I’m finding it hard to imagine going kiteboarding or windsurfing. But some of you may feel differently. If so, you’ll find east wind at 20-25 at Iwash (Rooster) Rock all day today. After 5pm, the wind will become westerly. Continued after the chart… Today’s Gorge Wind – these…

Meet your forecaster: Temira

For almost 30 years, Temira (they/them) has been making the most of the Gorge: riding river swell, shredding powder, and cycling all the gravel and pavement and trails. This is Temira’s playground, their gym… their life’s work.

This passion led Temira to take a vow: In 2006, Temira decided to provide the most accurate, hyper-local weather forecasts possible. Today, Temira’s forecasts have become an essential resource for thousands of skiers, snowboarders, wind sports enthusiasts and Gorge commuters. With Temira’s guidance, you can plan ahead, time your sessions perfectly, and just plain have more fun! But the story doesn’t end there.

There’s “Temira’s Awesome Travel Advisory Service” and “Valuable Advice for Gardeners Inhabiting Neighboring Areas” – the Gorge’s premier microclimate forecast and gardening information. When winter storms, extreme heat, hail, or avalanches on SR-14 and I-84 threaten, TATAS keeps everyone and their tomatoes and giant pumpkins and cash crops safe.

Temira’s relentless efforts keep the forecasts flowing. But it ain’t easy: each forecast takes a couple of hours. That’s where you come in. By contributing, you’re not just supporting Temira’s passion project – you’re investing in the safety and well-being of the entire Gorge community. Your financial support ensures these essential forecasts remain accessible to all, free of charge.

So please take a moment to click one of the buttons below. Donate $19.99 or more (how much does this forecast enhance your life?) and get the email in your inbox. Or just contribute enough for a cup or pound of coffee. I need coffee! Every contribution, no matter the amount, makes a difference. Help me keep this labor of love alive, so we can all commute safely, play in the river, and shred Mt. Hood with the best weather forecasts possible. Thank you!

Gorge wind forecast, continued…

Friday starts off with westerlies at 10-13 or so in the western Gorge. East of The Dalles, or possible only from Arlington eastward, models suggest 26-30 all day on Friday. I can’t imagine it’s going to be steady or reliable. However, if you’re desperate for time on the water, you may be able to soothe your desperation way out east on Friday.

Saturday currently looks light and variable in the morning with east wind at 20-25 in the afternoon. Sunday currently looks like W 22-25 in the eastern Gorge in the morning with light and variable wind in the afternoon.

Mt. Hood Snow Forecast

I really don’t have much to say about the Mt. Hood snow forecast today. It’s going to rain a lot up there over the next few days. Today, Thursday, sees the snow level between 9000′ and 11,000′ with lots of rain until midnight or so. Wind will be SW 40 early and SW 65 in the afternoon. Friday looks sprinkly during the day with rain after 10pm. The snow level will be 8000′ early and 6500′ after 5pm. Wind will be SW 55 early and SW 40 later in the day. Saturday looks very wet. The snow level will be 7000′ early and 10,000′ after 2pm. Wind will be SW 45 early, rising to SW 65 in the afternoon. Sunday also looks wet, but the snow level will fall back to 6500′.

Random Morning Thoughts

I opened up my Gorge Happiness email this morning and couldn’t help but giggle. Today’s happiness suggestion was to hide money in the pocket of a coat. I’m not sure if I’m supposed to hide money in one of my coats or a coat owned by someone else. The latter seems like a better way of paying it forward. So, there’s today’s happiness suggestion: hide money in someone’s coat (or freezer or pants pocket or piggybank). Or do something equally delightful and pay-it-forwardy, by setting up a suspended coffee, paying the bridge toll for the person behind you, leaving an extra-large tip, or doing some other kind act that doesn’t require money.

Disclaimer required by my grad school program: I am not your therapist (but I could be 51 graduate school credits from now). I am your weather forecaster. Take everything I say with a grain of salt, and consult with your actual therapist about your mental health issues. One other thing: I plan to keep doing this forecast indefinitely, even when I am a therapist.

Road and Mountain Biking

It’s way too wet to ride Post Canyon. It’s probably way too wet to ride anywhere except the gym. You have a better chance of getting out on your road bike or perhaps riding Syncline on Friday when there will be breaks in the wetness. If you must ride when it’s too wet to ride, consider the Kitchen Sink moto trail. It’s already a mess, and you’re less likely to do massive damage there than in Post, Whoopdee, etc.

Upcoming Events

There’s community yoga tonight at 6 at Samadhi. At 6:30, there’s Tai Chi at Our Savior Church in Bingen and Zumba at the Parkdale Community Center. At 7am tomorrow, Kickstand Coffee will give you a cup of coffee and a donut for running 4 miles. What could be better than that?

Have an awesome day today!

Temira
