Wednesday. Sunshine, wind, and … rain??

As you might have noticed by looking out the window, it’s a calm morning in the Gorge. Fisherfolk and spandexfolk are dancing with joy in anticipation of Chinook (10232 yesterday), Steelhead (2367) and road bikes. We’ll see calm wind this morning. Midday brings 12-15 from Stevenson to Hood River. By 2pm or so, maybe a…

Meet your forecaster: Temira

For almost 30 years, Temira (they/them) has been making the most of the Gorge: riding river swell, shredding powder, and cycling all the gravel and pavement and trails. This is Temira’s playground, their gym… their life’s work.

This passion led Temira to take a vow: In 2006, Temira decided to provide the most accurate, hyper-local weather forecasts possible. Today, Temira’s forecasts have become an essential resource for thousands of skiers, snowboarders, wind sports enthusiasts and Gorge commuters. With Temira’s guidance, you can plan ahead, time your sessions perfectly, and just plain have more fun! But the story doesn’t end there.

There’s “Temira’s Awesome Travel Advisory Service” and “Valuable Advice for Gardeners Inhabiting Neighboring Areas” – the Gorge’s premier microclimate forecast and gardening information. When winter storms, extreme heat, hail, or avalanches on SR-14 and I-84 threaten, TATAS keeps everyone and their tomatoes and giant pumpkins and cash crops safe.

Temira’s relentless efforts keep the forecasts flowing. But it ain’t easy: each forecast takes a couple of hours. That’s where you come in. By contributing, you’re not just supporting Temira’s passion project – you’re investing in the safety and well-being of the entire Gorge community. Your financial support ensures these essential forecasts remain accessible to all, free of charge.

Plus, it’s worth checking the out-east cams to see if Old Lady Creek fire is sending smoke towards Maryhill. Anyway, the GFS suggests a weak disturbance in the flow off the coast this afternoon, and that could mean this setup will favor Stevenson over the Swell-Hood River section. Something to keep in mind… River temp is 68 degrees and flow at The Dalles is 103kcfs. Continued after the chart…

Gorge wind forecast, continued…

High pressure continues both offshore and over the region on Thursday for another west wind day. Expect 12-15 to start the day from Viento eastward to Arlington. Wind in the eastern Gorge will die off by late morning, but the wind in the western Gorge will keep on blowing. Expect the speeds to build to 22-25 from Stevenson to The Dalles on Thursday afternoon.

Friday looks a bit tricky. Models suggest light wind all day long, but they’re also predicting strong high pressure off the coast and low pressure inland. This is much like last Friday, when models predicted zero wind for several days in a row. The river eventually settled on 28-32. Going that far in opposition to the models is out of my comfort zone, but I think it’s possible we’ll see 20-23 on Friday afternoon, despite the model predictions of 5-10. I guess we’ll just have to wait and see, won’t we?

Looking at the weekend, we’ll see a shift in the weather pattern. A strong, wet front heads our way over the Saturday to Sunday period. This will set us up for west wind of some nature on both days. That nature will probably contain a lot of gustiness and short-lived wind, but still… wind is wind. Let’s give the models a day or two to settle on timing and then talk more about the probabilities.

Random Morning Thoughts

A friend of mine was talking last night about how each of our positive actions or words has a positive impact on the world around us. Just the other day I was thinking about the opposite – how each negative action or word ripples out, creating more negativity and unhappiness and suffering.

Not sure this is true? Think about the last time someone attacked you verbally. What did that bring up in you? How did you respond in the moment? How did you interact with others for the rest of the day? It’s likely you weren’t as loving or happy as is your usual. Maybe you were guarded, quiet, solitary. Perhaps you lashed out at others, venting your anger, frustration and helplessness. If so, the cycle continued with them, and unhappiness spread through your six degrees of separation like the wake of a boat from shore to shore of the Columbia.

In this last situation, if you’d responded to the one unfortunate act with love and kindness, you would have ended the cycle. If, upon seeing an unkind act, you were to be more kind and more loving for the rest of the day, you’d reverse the cycle. I suspect this is much like a restaurant review, where negative experiences are shared with more people than positive experiences. If so, we need to be vigilant, doing a number of kind acts in response to each negative act we witness.

It ain’t going to hurt to try, so let’s give it a shot. Each time you witness a negative act, set your intention to respond by being kinder, more loving, and more compassionate for the next few hours (or days, months, years or lifetimes). We can reverse the ripples of negativity by canceling them out with ripples of love. Have an awesome day.

Road and Mountain Biking

Hospital Hill and Whoopdee are closed for fire season. That even applies to the four cars that were parked at the Spring Street trailhead yesterday. If you insist on trespassing, you will end up paying the consequences, and so will the rest of us in the form of restricted access. Yes, the rules apply to YOU too!

Coming up this afternoon, there’s ping pong at the Hood River Armory at 5, sailboat races at the Hood River Marina, and Zumba at the Parkdale Community Center at 6:30. Coming up tomorrow night at 5:30, it’s the race-pace Post n’ Pint bike ride at Dirty Fingers, followed by NFL football.

There’s a half-day meditation retreat at the White Salmon Grange Saturday afternoon. Sunday is the Gorge Kids Triathlon at Hood River’s Waterfront Park. The Pacific Hermitage Pah Bah is on Sunday, with a huge potluck meal at the White Salmon Grange (be there at 10:30 with your donation) followed by chanting and dharma talk and socializing.
