Monday. It’s a chilly start, eh?

See what I mean about fall winds being tricky to predict? Yesterday’s models were predicting low 20’s, I said 23-26, and the Mighty Columbia Gorge decided on 28-32. The picture is clearer for the next three days, with high pressure for the first two and an incoming something-or-other for Wednesday. Before I forget… the river…

Meet your forecaster: Temira

For almost 30 years, Temira (they/them) has been making the most of the Gorge: riding river swell, shredding powder, and cycling all the gravel and pavement and trails. This is Temira’s playground, their gym… their life’s work.

This passion led Temira to take a vow: In 2006, Temira decided to provide the most accurate, hyper-local weather forecasts possible. Today, Temira’s forecasts have become an essential resource for thousands of skiers, snowboarders, wind sports enthusiasts and Gorge commuters. With Temira’s guidance, you can plan ahead, time your sessions perfectly, and just plain have more fun! But the story doesn’t end there.

There’s “Temira’s Awesome Travel Advisory Service” and “Valuable Advice for Gardeners Inhabiting Neighboring Areas” – the Gorge’s premier microclimate forecast and gardening information. When winter storms, extreme heat, hail, or avalanches on SR-14 and I-84 threaten, TATAS keeps everyone and their tomatoes and giant pumpkins and cash crops safe.

Temira’s relentless efforts keep the forecasts flowing. But it ain’t easy: each forecast takes a couple of hours. That’s where you come in. By contributing, you’re not just supporting Temira’s passion project – you’re investing in the safety and well-being of the entire Gorge community. Your financial support ensures these essential forecasts remain accessible to all, free of charge.

Or just contribute enough for a cup or pound of coffee. I need coffee! Every contribution, no matter the amount, makes a difference. Help me keep this labor of love alive, so we can all commute safely, play in the river, and shred Mt. Hood with the best weather forecasts possible. Thank you!

Gorge wind forecast, continued…

For today, Monday, expect light and variable wind for the first couple hours of the morning. We’ll see the easterlies pick up by late morning through the entire Gorge. In this situation, models ten to overestimate the wind at Iwash (Rooster) and Steven’s Lock – they’re suggest 25-30 for a brief period at Iwash today. I suspect we’ll actually see 20-23 at Rooster and 15-18 at Stevens’ Locks with 5-10 in the rest of the Gorge. The upper valleys today (for you road bikers) are likely to see brisk easterlies too.

The easterlies end up confined to the western Gorge on Tuesday. Iwash (Rooster) Rock and Steven’s Locks will see 20-25 for a brief period late morning before backing off to 10-15 or less in the afternoon.

Wednesday starts out utterly calm and glassy and stays that way until noon or so. By 2pm, we should see west wind at 13-16 from Steven’s Locks to Hood River. Models suggest we’ll see 18-22 in the evening from Steven’s Locks to The Dalles.

The Euro model and the GFS are having some strong disagreements over the weather past Wednesday, so making any predictions would be nothing more than guesswork. Let’s just leave the forecast at three days for now.

Random Morning Thoughts

We human beings have a variety of needs for connection. We want community that shares our hobbies, community that shares our spirituality, community that shares our gender identification and/or sexual orientation, worldview, food preferences, and past experiences, among many other things.

It can be very difficult to find community. Speaking our needs aloud feels scary and vulnerable and even shameful, depending on what we’ve been through. That’s why there are so many online groups dedicated to creating community around nearly any given set of needs.

If you’re longing for a community of like-minded souls, you may find they are hidden right next to you. For example, I was able to start a women’s circle by asking 20 growth-oriented women if they might be interested. A chorus of yes’s (and a few scattered no’s) indicated to me that other people wanted what I wanted, but weren’t sure how to create it.

Getting what you want and need involves taking the risk of speaking your truth. There’s a potential for rejection, for sure. On the other hand, you may also find deeper friendships, connection, and self-confidence by reaching out. Speaking your truth, living your truth, is powerful. Give it a shot. Have an awesome day.

Disclaimer required by my grad school program: I am not your therapist (but I could be 51 graduate school credits from now). I am your weather forecaster. Take everything I say with a grain of salt, and consult with your actual therapist about your mental health issues. One other thing: I plan to keep doing this forecast indefinitely, even when I am a therapist.

Gorge Weather Forecast

It’s beautiful out there, and in a fun twist, it’s chilly too. Not as chilly as tomorrow, but chilly nonetheless. Temps will be in the mid 40’s early and mid 70’s this afternoon. East wind. No rainbows. Temps tomorrow morning are supposed to be right around 40, so let’s not be surprised if Parkdale sees 30’s. The high temp tomorrow will be near 80. Light easterlies. No rainbows. Wednesday looks sunny with temps in the mid 40’s early and right around 80 in the afternoon. Calm early, moderate westerlies later. No rainbows.

Road and Mountain Biking

Hospital Hill and Whoopdee are closed for fire season. That even applies to the four cars that were parked at the Spring Street trailhead yesterday. If you insist on trespassing, you will end up paying the consequences, and so will the rest of us in the form of restricted access. Yes, the rules apply to YOU too!

Upcoming Events

Today’s events start with meditation at Trinity Natural Medicine at noon and Tai Chi at the Mt. Hood Town Hall at 1. At 6 this evening, there’s pickup kickball at Daubenspeck Park and community yoga at Yoga Samadhi in White Salmon. At 6:30 tonight, there’s pickup basketball at the Mt. Hood Town Hall and Zumba at both St. Francis House in Odell and the Parkdale Community Center. Lastly tonight, there’s free YogaFaith at Pure Yoga in The Dalles.

Tomorrow night is my hands-down favorite event: meditation with the monks from Pacific Hermitage at 6:30. You can follow that up with $12 Prime Rib at Cebu from 5pm to 9pm.

This weekend’s events include the Music Festival of the Gorge at Hood River’s Waterfront Park on Saturday afternoon and evening. All proceeds benefit the Matt Klee scholarship fund. There’s a half-day meditation retreat at the White Salmon Grange Saturday afternoon. Sunday is the annual alms-giving ceremony at the Grange – an amazing meal at 11am followed by talks and chanting and socializing with cool people. Also on Sunday, the Hood River Waterfront hosts the annual Gorge Kids Triathlon.

Have an awesome day today!
