Saturday. No wind. Lots of wind. All in the same day!

There’s just a touch of an easterly breeze on the river this morning, enough to keep the fishing folks from sweltering at the mouths of the local rivers. This morning is most definitely a morning for fishing and road biking, but this afternoon is one for the wind sports folks. As a weak weather system…

Meet your forecaster: Temira

For almost 30 years, Temira (they/them) has been making the most of the Gorge: riding river swell, shredding powder, and cycling all the gravel and pavement and trails. This is Temira’s playground, their gym… their life’s work.

This passion led Temira to take a vow: In 2006, Temira decided to provide the most accurate, hyper-local weather forecasts possible. Today, Temira’s forecasts have become an essential resource for thousands of skiers, snowboarders, wind sports enthusiasts and Gorge commuters. With Temira’s guidance, you can plan ahead, time your sessions perfectly, and just plain have more fun! But the story doesn’t end there.

There’s “Temira’s Awesome Travel Advisory Service” and “Valuable Advice for Gardeners Inhabiting Neighboring Areas” – the Gorge’s premier microclimate forecast and gardening information. When winter storms, extreme heat, hail, or avalanches on SR-14 and I-84 threaten, TATAS keeps everyone and their tomatoes and giant pumpkins and cash crops safe.

Temira’s relentless efforts keep the forecasts flowing. But it ain’t easy: each forecast takes a couple of hours. That’s where you come in. By contributing, you’re not just supporting Temira’s passion project – you’re investing in the safety and well-being of the entire Gorge community. Your financial support ensures these essential forecasts remain accessible to all, free of charge.

Gorge wind forecast, continued…

Expect east 8-12 through midday or so. Around 1pm, we’ll see the wind pick up to W 13-16 from Steven’s Locks (Stevenson and Cascade Locks) to Hood River, first at Stevenson, and then moving east. A quick ramp-up will then happen, with the Steven’s Locks to Hood River stretch rising to 24-28 by 2:30pm or so, with the Rowena stretch quickly joining. The wind will fill in all the way to Arlington eventually, but maybe not before sunset. This isn’t the most reliable setup for the Swell area, but you should still be able to get a good hour or two on the river before the wind turns gusty. More reliable today: Steven’s Locks.

I’m still not quite sure what to make of Sunday’s GFS runs. The models suggest we’ll have dawn patrol at 22-25 (although the cold temps could knock that down) from Viento to Mosier. The models then suggest a quick die-off to 13-16 for the rest of the day. However, that die-off prediction seems aggressive give the presence of a 1032+mb high off the coast. My gut instinct is to say we’ll have westerlies at 23-26 through noon, when the wind will start to back off a bit. But that’s completely in contradiction to the models, just so you know!

Monday looks easier to predict. High pressure builds inland, setting up an east wind event. We’ll start off with light easterlies at 5-10 or less. The wind will pick up through the entire Gorge in the afternoon, with 10-13 possible lots of places and 20-25 likely at Steven’s Locks and Iwash (Rooster) Rock with 15-20 at Home Valley. Tuesday looks like a more traditional east wind day, with the wind focused at Steven’s Locks and Rooster, maxing out at 15-20.

Mt. Hood Snow Forecast

There will be snow on the ground at Mt. Hood today, and every day until the glaciers completely melt away.

Random Morning Thoughts

You ever notice how you can have conflicting desires in a given situation? For example, I was riding my bike up the back side of Cherry Heights in The Dalles yesterday, and I wanted to do multiple things related to this hill-climbing project: get up the damned hill, turn around, call CAT for a ride home, rest in the shade (but there wasn’t’ any shade)…

All I really wanted yesterday was to have a long, pleasant, soothing bike ride, but my mind was tossing all sorts of obstacles in my way. Maybe going for a 60 mile ride while I was still sore from jogging 3.8 miles (I’m not much of a runner!) wasn’t the best idea, but that’s a different story…

This happens to us all the time. Even if we have a strong intention to do something, opposing urges can arrive. The trick is to ignore those urges and focus on the thing we set out to do. If we interact with our internal opposition, we make it stronger. If our intended action is difficult or unpleasant, we can help the situation by bringing in something to make our attempted task more pleasant, making it easier to ignore the opposing urges.

For example, while climbing Cherry Heights, I ate a Peppermint Patty (yum!!!) and cranked up a good song. I also looked at the beautiful scenery and thought about how awesome I would feel having made it to the top of that hill.

Having competing desires is normal. Ignoring the oppositional urges is helpful. Bringing in pleasantries is also helpful. Eventually, if you do this enough, it’s possible to unify your mind around your intention, subduing internal conflict and filling your life with peace and ease. May you be at ease. Have an awesome day.

Disclaimer required by my grad school program: I am not your therapist (but I could be 51 graduate school credits from now). I am your weather forecaster. Take everything I say with a grain of salt, and consult with your actual therapist about your mental health issues. One other thing: I plan to keep doing this forecast indefinitely, even when I am a therapist.

Monday looks sunny. Temps will be in the low 40’s early and the mid 70’s in the afternoon. East wind. No rainbows.

Road and Mountain Biking

Hospital Hill and Whoopdee are closed for fire season. That even applies to the four cars that were parked at the Spring Street trailhead yesterday. If you insist on trespassing, you will end up paying the consequences, and so will the rest of us in the form of restricted access. Yes, the rules apply to YOU too!

Upcoming Events

Today’s events include the Huckleberry Festival in Bingen, and with a high temp today in the mid-80’s, a huckleberry milkshake is definitely on the menu. There’s a trail run in Post Canyon at 8 this morning, a women’s bike ride from Mountain View Cyles at 9, the Special Olympics Shred Drive at the Rite Aid parking lot from 10 to 2, and a half-day meditation retreat at Yoga Samadhi in White Salmon at 1.

Coming up tomorrow, the Hood River Valley High School cross-country team has a fundraiser run at Kickstand Coffee at 9 and there’s a skateboarding contest at Daubenspeck Park in Bingen at 11. There are three free yoga classes tomorrow: my favorite, the 9am class taught by Crystal at Yoga Samadhi, then 4pm YogaFaith (Christ-centered) at Pure Yoga in The Dalles and 6pm restorative yoga at Pure Yoga Hood River.

Have an awesome day today!

Temira
