Goodness gracious, it does get tricky forecasting the wind when fall and its accompanying cold nights and daily weather systems arrive. This morning’s gradient of .07 (pdx-dls) wasn’t corresponding with the wind on the river at 7am: we had upper single digits and low teens through the whole Gorge. As a trough of low pressure and a weak weather system move eastward today, we will see the wind pick up. Until then, you can go to the swap meet at the Luhr Jensen parking lot on Hood River’s waterfront. Continued after the chart…

Gorge wind forecast, continued…
As of last night, it was looking like today would bring 24-27. As of this morning, today is looking to max out around 22-25 this afternoon from Viento to Rufus with 18-22 at Stevenson and Arlington. Between now and then, expect slowly building west wind. River temp is 70 degrees, flow is 79kcfs, 13395 Chinook and 1731 Steelhead made it past Bonneville yesterday. You can purchase these fish, the wild, dip-caught (not gill net) at the fish stand at Windance. If you do so in the afternoon, Doug will give you fresh-smoked samples, which are pretty much the most awesome fish you’ll ever taste.

Monday is a bit of a transition day, starting with nice high pressure offshore and ending with a cold front in the evening. Look for Labor Day Dawn Patrol at 13-16 pretty much everywhere in the Gorge, with some areas a bit lighter and some a bit stronger. Well see 20-23 from Stevenson to Arlington by noon with 22-25 in the afternoon through the whole Gorge. The exception to this will likely be Swell, which usually sees less wind in this setup, so call it gusty 17-20 there after a 60-90 period of good wind.
The frontal system arrives on Tuesday, and it’s currently looking like a powerful one for this time of year. We’ll start off the day with light wind, rain, and rainbows. As the system moves east after 1pm or so, we’ll see the wind pick up to gusty 13-16 in the western Gorge (with sprinkles) and 22-25 east of Mosier. Wednesday currently looks like it’ll max out at 23-26.

Random Morning Thoughts
Yesterday I was riding my bicycle and I did one of those things that bicyclists do at T-intersections where there’s no oncoming traffic from the right. As I was cruising my merry way down the road at 25mph, just on the road side of the white line due to gravel and glass in the bike lane, a silver sedan blared a long blast of the horn behind me. I could feel the rage in that sound. Then the engine revved, and the car pulled up very close next to me. The driver, a male, screamed at me through his open window.
“First you don’t stop, and now you’re in the middle of the fucking road – it fucking figures,” he raged from his vehicle that was as close as he could get. My heart raced. Such anger… I worried that he would hit me. I didn’t look at him, shift my posture, or engage in any way, and after about 5 or 10 more seconds, he stomped on the gas and sped off, taking his fury away.
Sometimes in these moments we wonder what we did wrong. We blame this situation on ourselves. While it’s true that all of us make mistakes, none of use deserve to serve as a punching bag, no matter what has happened. Civilized dialog, or even letting a situation pass without speaking are always options. Some of you out there might have been the punching bag. Many of us have been the boxer at one time or another.
Rageful behavior is often a person’s attempt to gain power over others. Usually such displays happen in private (including a private vehicle on a public road), where the perpetrator won’t be chastised by witnesses. People often claim they have no control of their behavior in these moments. On some level, this is true, because they’re being taken over by reactions to helplessness and hurt from long ago. On the other hand, these power plays only happen in situations where nobody is around to stop this behavior, a situation that would leave the perpetrator once again feeling helpless and powerless. So, people making violent power plays are definitely making choices about behavior too.
If you’re the victim in these sorts of situations, it’s not your fault. If you’re the attacker, it is your fault. It’s your responsibility to learn kinder, gentler ways of expressing yourself in the world. It may not be easy, because it involves understanding old wounds, but it’s possible and ultimately freeing. May you be free. Have an awesome day.
