Yesterday proved to be windier than the models suggested, so let’s keep going with the gut instinct forecasts. Models today suggest 17-20 to start, dropping off midday. But let’s just ignore that and stick with what the .10 (pdx-dls) gradient suggests. No, let’s do the numbers first! The river temp is 70 degrees, flow at The Dalles is 99.2kcfs, there were 1998 fall Chinook and 2490 steelhead that made it past Bonneville yesterday. Now that you’re caught up to speed, here’s the forecast. Continued after the chart…

Gorge wind forecast, continued…
With clouds in Portland early this Monday morning, the desert will get a jump on the heating. That will keep the westerlies blowing today. Expect 18-21 to start from Viento to Mosier, picking up to 22-25 mid-morning and hanging on all day. Stevenson will see a slow build into the 20-23 range today, and the Rowena stretch of the river will join in with 10-13 for much of the day and 22-25 mid-afternoon. The wind did come up briefly at Maryhill late yesterday afternoon, so that’ll probably happen again today. Let’s call it 22-25 from 4-7pm or so.

I could just say “repeat” for tomorrow, but I think, given a slightly deeper marine layer and a weak weather disturbance, that we may see a slightly different day that today. It looks like Tuesday will start off a bit windier than Monday, with 21-24 from Viento to Mosier. Models suggest the wind will back off, but I’m not buying that. As a matter of fact, I think we’ll see the wind climb to 23-26 from Viento to Mosier by late morning with 23-26 from Stevenson to Doug’s in the afternoon. The one hitch tomorrow is that weak weather system. That could diminish the wind speed and quality near Swell.
Looking at Wednesday, we’ll have strong high pressure off the coast, minimal marine clouds in Portland, and heat in the desert. That’ll start us off with 19-21 from Viento to Mosier with 23-26 in the afternoon from Stevenson to The Dalles.
The long range forecast suggests strong high pressure will build inland for Thursday, Friday, and the first half of Saturday, turning the wind easterly for a few days. It will be perfect weather for swimming and using your floating object to play in the local rivers.

Random Morning Thoughts
It’s another beautiful morning in the Gorge, and dang… aren’t we lucky to be here? Most of the nation is sweltering in muggy, hot weather or excessive dry heat. But us, nope, we’ve got it good. It’s just warm enough that we don’t need jackets, and just cool enough that we don’t need to run (shuffle?) from air-conditioned space to air-conditioned space.
The weather is just hot enough that it’s perfect for playing in our perfectly situated bodies of water. And that, my friends, has led to a proliferation of floating objects. When I moved here, the streets were lined with cars topped with windsurf boards. Then the cars were filled with kites and kiteboards. Then they were filled with tourists looking to drink beer. I think beer-drinking tourists float, but the floatiness probably varies from tourist to tourist.
Anyway, the floating inanimate objects have taken over. Don’t believe me? Go hang out downtown on a moderately windy evening. You’ll see windsurf and kite gear, for sure. But you’ll also see whitewater kayaks and sit-on-tops. You’ll see SUPs. And you’ll see the downwind objects: racy-looking SUPs, Surfskis, outrigger canoes, prone paddling boards… I am sure there are others, but I don’t even know their names!
We’ve been invaded, I tell you. Downwind is all the rage right now! It’s going to be windy today. Whether you’re going upwind, cross-wind, or downwind, enjoy your floating object and have an awesome day!

Gorge Weather Forecast
What a lovely summer morning it is! It’s even lovelier now, because I just pressed the plunger on my French Press. Anyway, expect sunshine today with temps in the mid 60’s early (open windows) and upper 80’s this afternoon. Moderate wind. No rainbows. The next two days look exactly the same with the same instructions about your windows (and doors). Actually, I take that back. Tuesday will probably have some high clouds and slightly higher humidity.
