Saturday. Hot, damn hot. Better go to Mike’s Ice Cream’s 30th anniversary party this evening!

As of early this morning, there was nothing, zero, no wind at all happening on the Columbia. This zeroness was driven by a west .01 (pdx-dls) gradient, a passing weak disturbance, and a heat low over western Cascadia. Near-zero wind will continue through mid-morning, when the westerlies will finally pick up to a blistering 5-10…

Meet your forecaster: Temira

For almost 30 years, Temira (they/them) has been making the most of the Gorge: riding river swell, shredding powder, and cycling all the gravel and pavement and trails. This is Temira’s playground, their gym… their life’s work.

This passion led Temira to take a vow: In 2006, Temira decided to provide the most accurate, hyper-local weather forecasts possible. Today, Temira’s forecasts have become an essential resource for thousands of skiers, snowboarders, wind sports enthusiasts and Gorge commuters. With Temira’s guidance, you can plan ahead, time your sessions perfectly, and just plain have more fun! But the story doesn’t end there.

There’s “Temira’s Awesome Travel Advisory Service” and “Valuable Advice for Gardeners Inhabiting Neighboring Areas” – the Gorge’s premier microclimate forecast and gardening information. When winter storms, extreme heat, hail, or avalanches on SR-14 and I-84 threaten, TATAS keeps everyone and their tomatoes and giant pumpkins and cash crops safe.

Temira’s relentless efforts keep the forecasts flowing. But it ain’t easy: each forecast takes a couple of hours. That’s where you come in. By contributing, you’re not just supporting Temira’s passion project – you’re investing in the safety and well-being of the entire Gorge community. Your financial support ensures these essential forecasts remain accessible to all, free of charge.

So please take a moment to click one of the buttons below. Donate $19.99 or more (how much does this forecast enhance your life?) and get the email in your inbox. Or just contribute enough for a cup or pound of coffee. I need coffee! Every contribution, no matter the amount, makes a difference. Help me keep this labor of love alive, so we can all commute safely, play in the river, and shred Mt. Hood with the best weather forecasts possible. Thank you!

Gorge wind forecast, continued…

By mid-afternoon today (Saturday), we should have 13-16 from Steven’s Locks to the White Salmon Sandbar. In the evening, we may just see the wind pick up to 18-22 from Steven’s Locks to The Dalles. 99 degrees and windy. That will be nice. Nice enough that I might just break out my biggest sail (4.5) and get on the river to cool off.

The thermal trough shifts east on Sunday, and a weak disturbance moves through. That’ll drag more marine clouds into Portland, setting up the Gorge for a windy, if not-quite-nuking, day. As of Saturday morning, models were suggesting Dawn Patrol at 21-24 from Viento to the Wonderbar. By late morning, we should have 24-27 from Viento to The Dalles, with the possibility of the Maryhill stretch joining in the afternoon. Stevenson should start out at 7-11 and build to 20-23.

Now, that weather system moving through on Sunday, that could cause some trouble. It may impact the wind quality and duration near the Hatchery. If so, there’s always Stevenson, Mosier, and Doug’s.

A deeper marine push on Monday sets us up for another windy day. Expect Dawn Patrol at 23-26 from Viento to Mosier on Monday morning. By late morning, we should have 24-28 from Viento to Mosier, filling in from Stevenson to Rufus in the afternoon. Tuesday looks much like Monday, with the potential for slightly stronger afternoon wind.

Mt. Hood Snow Forecast

There will be snow on the ground at Mt. Hood today, and every day until the glaciers completely melt away.

Random Morning Thoughts

It’s really a lovely morning out there, isn’t it? It’s so lovely that I’m going to set the random thoughts aside for today and go for a bike ride before the heat arrives. Have an awesome day!

Disclaimer required by my grad school program: I am not your therapist (but I could be in 700 days). I am your weather forecaster. Take everything I say with a grain of salt, and consult with your actual therapist about your mental health issues. One other thing: I plan to keep doing this forecast indefinitely, even when I am a therapist.

Gorge Weather Forecast

We maxed out at 99 degrees yesterday, and the forecast is for the same today. Temps will be in the low 60’s early (open windows AND doors) and upper 90’s this afternoon (close everything before that happens). Tomorrow looks cooler. Temps will be in the upper 50’s early and the mid 80’s in the afternoon. Moderate to strong wind. No rainbows. Monday looks sunny with maybe just possibly a few scattered marine clouds. Temps will be in the upper 50’s early and the mid 80’s in the afternoon. Moderate to strong wind. No rainbows.

Road and Mountain Biking

All trails on Kreps and SDS lands are now closed. That means Whoopdee and Hospital Hill. The ban is actually wider than that – all access is closed to all users. Yes, even you and your puppy. Everyone is banned from Kreps and SDS lands until fire season is over.

Upcoming Events

Today’s community events include a trail run at 8am in Post Canyon, a women’s road bike ride leaving mountain view cycles at 9, and the Post Canyon 50k ultramarathon. Speaking of trails, all Kreps and SDS lands are closed to all users as of today due to fire danger.

Other events today include a geocache race at Meadows, a half-day meditation retreat at Yoga Samadhi, Cinderella at Hood River Movies in the Park at Dusk, Stone in Love at Lewis and Clark Park in The Dalles, and Mike’s Ice Cream’s 30th anniversary party in Hood River starting at 6, with free ice cream and drinks. The Perseid meteor shower continues tonight, best after midnight and best facing northeast away from city lights.

Do not forget that there are drag races at the Dallesport Airport tomorrow starting at 10am. How often do you get to see drag races in the Gorge? Almost never. So go check it out.

Have an awesome day today!

Temira
