Wednesday. Got your parasol?

This lovely morning (it’s Wednesday – thanks for helping me keep track) starts off with marine clouds in the west and a strong offshore high. The gradients aren’t all that big, with high pressure building inland: just .05 (pdx-dls) and .03 (dls-psc) at 7am. With all those clouds to the west and the high pressure…

Meet your forecaster: Temira

For almost 30 years, Temira (they/them) has been making the most of the Gorge: riding river swell, shredding powder, and cycling all the gravel and pavement and trails. This is Temira’s playground, their gym… their life’s work.

This passion led Temira to take a vow: In 2006, Temira decided to provide the most accurate, hyper-local weather forecasts possible. Today, Temira’s forecasts have become an essential resource for thousands of skiers, snowboarders, wind sports enthusiasts and Gorge commuters. With Temira’s guidance, you can plan ahead, time your sessions perfectly, and just plain have more fun! But the story doesn’t end there.

There’s “Temira’s Awesome Travel Advisory Service” and “Valuable Advice for Gardeners Inhabiting Neighboring Areas” – the Gorge’s premier microclimate forecast and gardening information. When winter storms, extreme heat, hail, or avalanches on SR-14 and I-84 threaten, TATAS keeps everyone and their tomatoes and giant pumpkins and cash crops safe.

Temira’s relentless efforts keep the forecasts flowing. But it ain’t easy: each forecast takes a couple of hours. That’s where you come in. By contributing, you’re not just supporting Temira’s passion project – you’re investing in the safety and well-being of the entire Gorge community. Your financial support ensures these essential forecasts remain accessible to all, free of charge.

So please take a moment to click one of the buttons below. Donate $19.99 or more (how much does this forecast enhance your life?) and get the email in your inbox. Or just contribute enough for a cup or pound of coffee. I need coffee! Every contribution, no matter the amount, makes a difference. Help me keep this labor of love alive, so we can all commute safely, play in the river, and shred Mt. Hood with the best weather forecasts possible. Thank you!

Gorge wind forecast, continued…

So, instead of going with the model predictions, let’s go with gut instinct, not nearly as reliable, but the only thing available today. How about 14-17 this morning from Viento to Swell with 10-13 from the Wonderbar to Mosier. Beaches further west and east will be under 10mph until late morning. Now, models suggest zero wind midday, but I think we’ll stick with 14-17 all day, perhaps 20-23 late in the afternoon, filling in from Stevenson to Mosier. Total guesswork today, though, based on the fact that the models are useless!

Looking at Thursday, the models suggest we’ll see 13-16 early, going to zero midday and picking up to 10-13 late. Given the fact that we’re expecting less marine clouds, that seems pretty likely, so let’s go with it. Strongest wind on Thursday will be from Viento to Swell in the morning and at Stevenson late in the day.

Friday looks quite light all day long as hot weather combines with high pressure and leftover meteorite impacts to give us wakeboarding conditions in the Gorge. The westerlies return for the weekend, peaking at 22-25 or so Saturday afternoon and 26-30 or so on Sunday.

Random Morning Thoughts

It’s Wednesday, August 10th, and do you know what that means? It means that in less than 12 hours, I’ll be finished with my first year of grad school. In 12 hours, Summer Temira will be here. Tomorrow, my poor neglected bicycles, my poor neglected kayaks, and my not-so-neglected, but still-gathering-dust windsurfing gear will receive some much needed attention.

Although the lack of playtime hasn’t bothered me all that much over the last year, I’m happy playtime will be back. Grad School (my name for the accumulation of too many chocolate bars and too much sitting) is making cycling difficult, and I’ll be glad to leave her behind. But I digress… I was pretty worried before grad school (not capitalized, note) started, thinking how sad it would be to miss out on wind and good dirt and cool pavement.

But you know what? Grad school is awesome too. The lesson from this is twofold: try not to worry too much or create too much of a sense of loss before something happens. You don’t know what it’ll be like when it arrives. It might be completely unlike your prognostications. Second, don’t let being in the middle of something difficult distract you from the small pleasures that are still happening in your life – boy do I appreciate my Wednesday morning bike ride and waterfall swim now!

Third, know that “this too shall pass”. Everything changes. If you can embrace the fact that life will renew each day until it does not, you can live the fullest life possible. Well, that was a threefold lesson, not a two-fold lesson. See, don’t get caught up in expectations! Have an awesome day. Love, Summer Temira!

Disclaimer required by my grad school program: I am not your therapist (but I could be in 700 days). I am your weather forecaster. Take everything I say with a grain of salt, and consult with your actual therapist about your mental health issues. One other thing: I plan to keep doing this forecast indefinitely, even when I am a therapist.

Gorge Weather Forecast

Looks like we’re in for another warm and dry stretch. Expect sunshine today with temps in the low 60’s early and the low 80’s in the afternoon. Light wind. No rainbows. Thursday looks warmer, with temps in the upper 50’s early and the upper 80’s in the afternoon. Light wind. No rainbows. If Thursday wasn’t warm enough, you’ll like Friday better: temps in the low 60’s early and the mid 90’s in the afternoon. Light wind. No rainbows.

Road and Mountain Biking

Everything is open as far as I know, although Boulder Lakes is rumored to have some trees down. Whoopdee is closed due to logging. All trails on Kreps and SDS lands will close on August 13th due to fire season. That means Hospital Hill, East Ridge, and Whoopdee, which will be doubly closed.

Upcoming Events

Today’s community events include a free yoga class at the Fish Food Bank at 10. That’s followed this evening by ping pong at the Hood River Armory at 5, the women’s Post n’ Pinot bike ride at Dirty Fingers at 5:30, Sailboat Races at the Hood River Marina at 6, and Zumba at the Parkdale Community Center at 6. If you want to watch Olympic soccer on the big screen tonight, go to Jackson Park. This event is by donation benefiting HRVHS soccer. Food will be available for purchase. Starts at 8pm.

Tomorrow night looks clear as a bell, and that’s great news for the peak of the Perseid Meteor shower – watch the northeastern sky after midnight for the best show.

Looking ahead to this weekend, the movie Up shows at Cascade Locks Marine Park Friday night, and Cinderella shows at Jackson Park in Hood River Saturday night. Mt. Hood Meadows has a geocache race on Saturday. The Journey Tribute Band Stone in Love plays in the Dalles on Saturday night, and there are drag races in Dallesport at the airport on Sunday.

Have an awesome day today!

Temira
