This right here is your Monday-Tuesday forecast, because this is the day when I have 12 hours between the end of my night class and the start of my day class. So, here ya go: Monday started off with an upper level low pressure system over western Washington, high pressure off the coast, and marine clouds way past Hood River. Gradients were just .05 (pdx-dls) and .02 (dls-psc). Continued after the chart…

Gorge wind forecast, continued…
We’ll see the wind pick up a bit today as the desert heats up. Expect just 5-10 under the clouds this morning, with 13-16 way out east at Arlington. By midday, we should see 13-16 east of Hood River, all the way to Arlington, with 10-13 under the clouds at Stevenson and in Hood River. This afternoon is a bit tricky, as desert heating combines with an upper level cold pool to create a possibility of thunderstorms. That could impact wind strength and quality. Best case scenario today is mid to late afternoon westerlies at 20-23, strongest from Rowena to Rufus. River temp is 70 degrees. Flow is 106kcfs.

Tuesday morning starts off with clouds in the western Gorge and a chance of showers. As Tuesday progresses, the upper level low will move eastward toward Idaho, setting up better cross-Cascade gradients. We’ll have 12-15 Tuesday morning from Hood River to Arlington. By midday, we’ll have 20-23 from Hood River to The Dalles. Later in the afternoon, as the low goes bye-bye, high pressure builds back in off the coast, and sunshine makes the desert warm, we’ll have 24-28 from Rowena (maybe Mosier too) to Arlington. Steven’s Locks will start off light tomorrow and pick up to 13-16 in the afternoon. Hood River’s, if it stays cloudy, will see 13-16. If it gets sunny, 16-19+.
Wednesday starts off with 17-20 from Viento to Swell and picks up to 20-23 from Stevenson to Doug’s. Thursday and Friday currently look like light wind days. The long-range and totally unreliable forecast that you shouldn’t plan your life around suggests next weekend will be super windy. Apparently this is The Year of the Weekend Warrior…

Random Morning Thoughts
This is my final week of summer quarter, and I’m pretty excited to start my summer vacation. I also have a lot of work to do in the next 72 hours, including a class presentation. Definitely not my fav, getting up in front of a crowd, but it’ll be over and done with soon!
Sometimes we get really stressed out about upcoming conversations or presentations or interactions. A future 30 minute interaction can come to dominate hours and days and maybe even weeks of our present-moment experience. Looking at this objectively, it’s ridiculous, right?
If we can keep in mind that the upcoming scary thing is going to be over in a contained period of time (assuming it is), we can remove some of that stress. Why? Because the part of our mind that gets scared and anxious doesn’t experience time the same way as the logical part of our mind. So, we can hack our brain by reminding ourselves in moments of anxiety that “this will only be 30 minutes of my life”. Create a container for the future worry, and you mind find yourself worrying less.
Hack your mind. Rule your world. Have an awesome day.
Disclaimer required by my grad school program: I am not your therapist (but I could be in 700 days). I am your weather forecaster. Take everything I say with a grain of salt, and consult with your actual therapist about your mental health issues. One other thing: I plan to keep doing this forecast indefinitely, even when I am a therapist.

Road and Mountain Biking
Everything is open as far as I know, although Boulder Lakes is rumored to have some trees down. Whoopdee is closed due to logging. All trails on Kreps and SDS lands will close on August 13th due to fire season. That means Hospital Hill, East Ridge, and Whoopdee, which will be doubly closed.
