Friday. It’s gonna be a windy three days!

Catalarm woke me up around 7:05 today when the automatic food dispenser automatically didn’t dispense food. At that time, there were already whitecaps on the river, a wind average near 20 at Swell, and a gradient of W .12 (pdx-dls) and .01 (dls-psc). Given that solid gradient and lack of significant atmospheric dynamics today, it’s…

Meet your forecaster: Temira

For almost 30 years, Temira (they/them) has been making the most of the Gorge: riding river swell, shredding powder, and cycling all the gravel and pavement and trails. This is Temira’s playground, their gym… their life’s work.

This passion led Temira to take a vow: In 2006, Temira decided to provide the most accurate, hyper-local weather forecasts possible. Today, Temira’s forecasts have become an essential resource for thousands of skiers, snowboarders, wind sports enthusiasts and Gorge commuters. With Temira’s guidance, you can plan ahead, time your sessions perfectly, and just plain have more fun! But the story doesn’t end there.

There’s “Temira’s Awesome Travel Advisory Service” and “Valuable Advice for Gardeners Inhabiting Neighboring Areas” – the Gorge’s premier microclimate forecast and gardening information. When winter storms, extreme heat, hail, or avalanches on SR-14 and I-84 threaten, TATAS keeps everyone and their tomatoes and giant pumpkins and cash crops safe.

Temira’s relentless efforts keep the forecasts flowing. But it ain’t easy: each forecast takes a couple of hours. That’s where you come in. By contributing, you’re not just supporting Temira’s passion project – you’re investing in the safety and well-being of the entire Gorge community. Your financial support ensures these essential forecasts remain accessible to all, free of charge.

So please take a moment to click one of the buttons below. Donate $19.99 or more (how much does this forecast enhance your life?) and get the email in your inbox. Or just contribute enough for a cup or pound of coffee. I need coffee! Every contribution, no matter the amount, makes a difference. Help me keep this labor of love alive, so we can all commute safely, play in the river, and shred Mt. Hood with the best weather forecasts possible. Thank you!

Gorge wind forecast, continued…

Expect 18-22 right off the bat from Viento to the White Salmon Sandbar (well, maybe the Hook, because it’s glassy in Hood River as I write this and capping at the Hook). The wind will quickly rise to the 24-28 range from Viento to Mosier by mid to late morning. By this afternoon, we should have 28-32 from Swell to Rufus. Steven’s Locks will start off light today. By late morning, expect 13-16 down there, and by afternoon, 22-25. Arlington’s a maybe today. Let’s call it 22-25 this afternoon.

Tomorrow, Saturday, is a little trickier. An upper level low pushes down the BC coast, shifting into WA late in the day. This will make the wind gusty and unreliable, but still windy. Because wind is always windy – it’s just a matter of quality. Like steaks – just a matter of quality. Did I mention that T-bones were half off at Rosauers yesterday? Anyway, I digress.

Saturday looks a little tricky. Expect 13-16 in the western Gorge early with 26-30 at Mosier and 24-28 further east for Saturday Dawn Patrol. The wind will climb to 28-32 mid-morning from Mosier to Arlington, backing off in the afternoon to 24-28. Beaches near Hood River are a tricky call on Saturday, because we don’t yet know the depth of the marine layer. Steven’s Locks also depends on marine clouds, but should make it to 13-16 in the afternoon, at the very least.

Sunday sees a deep marine layer as a trough of low pressure sits over the Pacific Northwest. Combine that trough with offshore high pressure for another round of wind. Expect 17-20 east of Hood River early, rising to 20-23 from Mosier eastward by mid-morning. By afternoon, we should see 25-29 from Hood River to Rufus. This forecast is likely to change, if not in strength, at least in preferred locations. Looking at Monday, you can expect 17-21.

Mt. Hood Snow Forecast

There will be snow on the ground at Mt. Hood today, and every day until the glaciers completely melt away.

Random Morning Thoughts

A friend of mine took me out for dinner last night. We ate chocolate torte, apple pie, and fish and chips, in that order, not the reverse. It’s important to do that once in a while, because life is uncertain. If you’re going out for dinner because you want dessert, then consider dining in the opposite order. As Seattle’s Pacific Desert Company says (said?): “Eat dessert first – life is uncertain!”

This doesn’t mean you should always let your dessert-loving id run your life. But there are circumstances where it’s A-ok to let yourself do what you really want to do. Being momentarily irresponsible and childlike can break up your routine and unleash your creativity. The trick is determining when it’s unhelpful to behave like a child. In those moments, let your inner adult run the show.

Adulting can be a tedious business. Responsibilities pile up, and the to-do list is never finished. Remember to let yourself be a careless child every once in a while… eat dessert first (or play on the river before your work is done for the day). Life is uncertain. Have an awesome day.

Disclaimer required by my grad school program: I am not your therapist (but I could be in 700 days). I am your weather forecaster. Take everything I say with a grain of salt, and consult with your actual therapist about your mental health issues. One other thing: I plan to keep doing this forecast indefinitely, even when I am a therapist.
