There’s pretty much zero wind on the river this Thursday morning, and models suggest we’ll see zero wind for the rest of the day. Although that’s the most likely scenario, it’s also possible we’ll see an early evening push of 10-13 from Stevenson to Viento or Stevenson to Hood River. This might just be one of those days where reality outperforms the models. That happens sometimes, you know! Continued after the chart…

Gorge wind forecast, continued…
Friday starts off with a marine push into the Willamette Valley, setting up an all-day temp gradient across the Cascades. Combine that with offshore high pressure and a heat low in the desert, and you’re looking at a big day on the river. Expect 21-24 right off the bat from Viento to Mosier. By mid-morning, we should have 25-29 from Viento to Mosier. Morning wind at Steven’s Locks will start off light and pick up to 10-15. The morning will be followed by a very windy afternoon: 28-32 from Viento to Arlington, with the strongest wind concentrated from Mosier to Rufus in the afternoon.

Saturday looks a little trickier as an upper level low moves into western British Columbia. That will set up extra-large cross-Cascade gradients, but it may also contribute to unreliability in the wind field. In other words, you may end up driving quite a bit on Saturday to find your happy spot. Anyway, you can expect 25-29 to start the day east of Mosier with 5-10 at cloudy Stevenson and a big question mark near Hood River (probably cloudy 13-16). East of the low clouds, we’ll end up with 30-35 for much of the day, fading to 24-28 after 3pm.
That upper level low moves into Washington on Sunday. The current forecast (subject to change), of course, is 17-20 near Hood River in the morning and gusty 26-30 through much of the Gorge in the afternoon. Ok. Go ahead and pack your car now for a weekend in the Gorge. Sorry… did I say car? I meant White Sprinter Van.

Random Morning Thoughts
I had an experience yesterday that’s stuck with me. Normally I don’t talk about things that I haven’t finished processing, but I’m going to make an exception for this one. Microaggressions (minor insults, intentional or unintentional) come in a variety of forms. One of the most painful for the recipient is comments intended to help that actually blame the person in the situation.
This can happen in the context of poverty. People say, “Oh, those folks just need to get a job.” But there aren’t jobs in that person’s area, or there aren’t jobs that allow people to pay for childcare, or there isn’t transportation that allows a person to reach a potential job in a reasonable amount of time. This can happen in the context of teen pregnancy. People say, “Oh, those girls need to use condoms,” thus blaming the woman, not the man, and also not taking into account the effects of abstinence-only education and religious doctrine.
Another deeply painful area where people can person-blame is when talking to single people. Offering advice – “Have you tried online dating?” “You need to come to the city more.” “Are you asking your friends to set you up?” – implies that you think the single person isn’t doing enough. If a single person is unhappy with that status (and many people are happy single!), they are almost certainly doing all of those things and more in order to meet people. They are likely putting significant emotional energy into finding relationship, and when you suggest they do more, you are blaming them for their situation.
It’s subtle, and the response to hearing about single-blaming is often this: “Oh, don’t be so sensitive – I’m just trying to help!” Most often, however, single people don’t want your help. They want you to understand how they feel. And this goes for hurting people across the board – generally they don’t want help. They want validation, empathy, and a kind person to listen.
So, next time someone is sharing their pain with you (whatever the topic), listen to your reply. Are you subtly blaming the person for their situation? If so, take a breath. Apologize for how your comment may have sounded. And ask the person what they need, rather than blaming them for being in pain. Have an awesome day!
