Saturday. KB4C, outriggers and WIND!

There’s a very deep and solid marine layer out there this Saturday morning, and bits of marine air and fluffy marine clouds have pushed past Hood River. That means the steadiest, warmest wind will shift a bit east today, but it’ll still be windy enough for Kiteboarding for Cancer at the Event Site. A couple…

Meet your forecaster: Temira

For almost 30 years, Temira (they/them) has been making the most of the Gorge: riding river swell, shredding powder, and cycling all the gravel and pavement and trails. This is Temira’s playground, their gym… their life’s work.

This passion led Temira to take a vow: In 2006, Temira decided to provide the most accurate, hyper-local weather forecasts possible. Today, Temira’s forecasts have become an essential resource for thousands of skiers, snowboarders, wind sports enthusiasts and Gorge commuters. With Temira’s guidance, you can plan ahead, time your sessions perfectly, and just plain have more fun! But the story doesn’t end there.

There’s “Temira’s Awesome Travel Advisory Service” and “Valuable Advice for Gardeners Inhabiting Neighboring Areas” – the Gorge’s premier microclimate forecast and gardening information. When winter storms, extreme heat, hail, or avalanches on SR-14 and I-84 threaten, TATAS keeps everyone and their tomatoes and giant pumpkins and cash crops safe.

Temira’s relentless efforts keep the forecasts flowing. But it ain’t easy: each forecast takes a couple of hours. That’s where you come in. By contributing, you’re not just supporting Temira’s passion project – you’re investing in the safety and well-being of the entire Gorge community. Your financial support ensures these essential forecasts remain accessible to all, free of charge.

A couple of notes: there is no windsurf launching at the Event Site today. Kites may launch. Also, if you have baked goods, you can bring them for the athletes. Third, there is an outrigger canoe race from Stevenson to Bingen today. Please keep your eyes open if you are windsurfing and kiting in the Corridor – stay away from those boats! Gorge wind forecast, continued…

Okay, on to the forecast. Our morning started off with .09 (pdx-dls) and .04 (dls-psc) with 68 degree water and 158kcfs at The Dalles Dam. We have a weak surface ridge in the PNW, a beastly 1038mb high off the coast, and an upper level low in Idaho. Models suggest we’ll have 15-18 for not-quite-dawn patrol with 23-26 this afternoon. Given the overall picture, I’m going to add some gut instinct to the forecast.

I suspect we’ll see 15-18 from Viento to Doug’s this morning (more at Mosier) with 10-13 at Stevenson and out east. By late morning, we should have 24-28 (or more) from Mosier to Doug’s, with 26-30 this afternoon from Mosier to Arlington (late at Arlington). Wind strength today from Stevenson to Hood River is a tricky call with the marine layer so far in. I think we’ll see the wind pick up late in the morning or early in the afternoon to 25-29 from Viento to HR with 13-16 or a touch more at Stevenson. I’m going out on a limb with this forecast, but ya gotta take a risk sometimes, right?

Tomorrow is a bit trickier, with the GFS model suggesting building thunderclouds by midday with thunderstorms possible in the afternoon and overnight hours. Models say 15-18 early in the morning from Hood River to Doug’s with 17-21 by mid-morning, holding through afternoon. If the thunderstorms don’t interfere, I suspect we’ll actually see 21-24, with the strongest wind on Sunday between Hood River and Doug’s.

Looking at Monday, we may start off with an unstable atmosphere, but models suggest 23-26 Dawn Patrol from Hood River to Arlington. By midday, models say 26-30+ east of Hood River. Tuesday looks like 10-13 early and 16-19 in the afternoon.

Random Morning Thoughts

We haven’t talked about catastrophizing in a long while, so let’s talk about it today. I was just looking at my hands, and for the first time in my life, I have fingernails. This is a direct result of a lot of psychotherapy, but that’s a different story. As a result of never having had fingernails that weren’t embarrassing, I have never had a manicure.

Now, the thought of having one is scary. After all, the manicurist might make fun of me. I might leave the salon and immediately chip my nails. Then my nails would look ugly, and I wouldn’t know what to do. I’d have to break out the nail polish remover and take off the polish, and that would make my nails weak and brittle and then they’d break and I’d be embarrassed by my hands again… Um, wow… ridiculous, isn’t this?

We all have a tendency to think ahead to the worst-case scenario. We do this so we have a plan in mind if the worst happens. However, when we think like this, we just create stress for ourselves. Saying “STOP” probably isn’t going to work, but we can try something else.

Next time you get into this cycle of catastrophizing, count how many steps down the path of doom you go. In other words, count the number of “and thens” in your stream of thought. Why? Because you’re going to worry about each one. See if you can let go of a couple of the least likely outcomes. The idea here is to get back to the most likely outcome, not the myriad of awful possibilities. But if you only drop one or two of your worry-worts, that’s okay too.

Most likely outcome for me: I’ll have pretty nails to enjoy for a day. What’s the most likely outcome of your current catastrophic scenario? Let go of a few of the steps (or even just one), and have a little less worry in your life and more energy for fun. Have an awesome day!

Disclaimer required by my grad school program: I am not your therapist (but I could be in 700 days). I am your weather forecaster. One other thing: I plan to keep doing this forecast indefinitely, even when I am a therapist.

Gorge Weather Forecast

What a beautiful morning it is, with a few fluffy marine clouds (but bigger than yesterday) overhead in Hood River. Expect mostly sunshine today with temps in the low 60’s early and the mid 70’s in the afternoon. Light to moderate wind early, strong wind later. No rainbows.

Sunday looks interesting. We should start off a lot like today: partly cloudy. In the afternoon, if the GFS model is correct, we’ll have thunderclouds at the least and thunderstorms at the worst/best. Temps will be in the upper 50’s early and the muggy upper 70’s in the afternoon. Moderate wind. 11% chance of rainbows.

Thunderclouds should continue Monday morning for a spectacular sunrise, but we should have sunshine by afternoon. Temps will be in the low 60’s early and the mid 70’s in the afternoon. Strong wind. 7% chance of rainbows.

Road and Mountain Biking

It’s all open, with the exception of the 7 trees on Gunsight and the 20 trees on Gumjuwac. Enjoy! In road biking news, it’s going to be windy, but if you head up in elevation, you’ll probably find less wind.

Upcoming Events

Events today include kiteboarding for cancer at Hood River’s Event Site. If you want to support the athletes, drop off some baked goods. There are short track mountain bike races all day today at Cooper Spur. There’s also an outrigger canoe race from Stevenson to Bingen today, so please keep an eye out for these hard-to-see, but big boats coming through the Corridor.

In the Dalles today, there’s the Ft. Dalles Days run and walk at 8:30 at Sorosis park. At 9 at Lewis and Clark Park, there’s a bootcamp workout, and that’s followed by a free yoga class at 10:30. Coming up this evening, it’s Movies in the Park (Hood River) with the movie Princess Bride starting at dusk at Jackson Park.

If you want more free yoga, there are three classes tomorrow: 9am at Samadhi, 4pm at Pure Yoga in The Dalles, and 6pm at Pure Yoga in Hood River.

Have an awesome day today!

Temira
