Friday. Wind!

When I woke up (late, thank goodness) this morning, it was already windy on the river. Wisps of marine clouds were floating over Hood River, and large whitecaps were rolling down the river. I couldn’t see Tonia Farman (Kiteboarding for Cancer), but I bet she had a big grin on her face. Speaking of KB4C,…

Meet your forecaster: Temira

For almost 30 years, Temira (they/them) has been making the most of the Gorge: riding river swell, shredding powder, and cycling all the gravel and pavement and trails. This is Temira’s playground, their gym… their life’s work.

This passion led Temira to take a vow: In 2006, Temira decided to provide the most accurate, hyper-local weather forecasts possible. Today, Temira’s forecasts have become an essential resource for thousands of skiers, snowboarders, wind sports enthusiasts and Gorge commuters. With Temira’s guidance, you can plan ahead, time your sessions perfectly, and just plain have more fun! But the story doesn’t end there.

There’s “Temira’s Awesome Travel Advisory Service” and “Valuable Advice for Gardeners Inhabiting Neighboring Areas” – the Gorge’s premier microclimate forecast and gardening information. When winter storms, extreme heat, hail, or avalanches on SR-14 and I-84 threaten, TATAS keeps everyone and their tomatoes and giant pumpkins and cash crops safe.

Temira’s relentless efforts keep the forecasts flowing. But it ain’t easy: each forecast takes a couple of hours. That’s where you come in. By contributing, you’re not just supporting Temira’s passion project – you’re investing in the safety and well-being of the entire Gorge community. Your financial support ensures these essential forecasts remain accessible to all, free of charge.

So please take a moment to click one of the buttons below. Donate $19.99 or more (how much does this forecast enhance your life?) and get the email in your inbox. Or just contribute enough for a cup or pound of coffee. I need coffee! Every contribution, no matter the amount, makes a difference. Help me keep this labor of love alive, so we can all commute safely, play in the river, and shred Mt. Hood with the best weather forecasts possible. Thank you!

If you’d like to make the event even better, drop off some baked goods tomorrow morning for the big event. Continued after the chart…

Gorge wind forecast, continued…

On to the forecast, the 7am gradient was at .10 (pdx-dls) and .07 (dls-psc) with the water temp at 68 degrees and the river flow at 169kcfs. The peaches at Maryhill are ripe, I hear, important information when making a driving decision today. Expect 21-24 this morning from Viento to Doug’s with 16-19 further east and 10-13 at Stevenson. The wind should pick up to 25-29 this afternoon from Stevenson to Rufus, with 22-25 at Arlington. There are some weak weather disturbances moving through today, so that could impact the wind quality at Swell.

Looking at tomorrow, we’ll start off with 18-22 or so from Hood River to Doug’s. By the afternoon, we’ll have 24-28 from Hood River to Rufus, maybe Arlington too. One question tomorrow is the depth of the marine layer – it could push the stronger wind east of Hood River, leaving the under-the-clouds locations with 13-16.

Sunday starts off all good, with a deep marine layer and westerlies at 17-21 from Viento to The Dalles. Sunday afternoon looks tricky, with a decent chance of thunderstorms. So, models call for 22-25 or so Sunday afternoon, but the convection is probably going to impact the wind quality and duration. Monday looks like 25-29 all day everywhere east of Viento.

Jones, Sauvie’s, Coast Beta Test Forecast

Jones Friday: 12-15. Jones Saturday: 13-16. Jones Sunday: 17-21, maybe. Sauvie’s Friday: 10-13. Sauvie’s Saturday and Sunday: no. Coast (north/central/south). Friday: 5-10/10-15/30+, NW swell 5′ @ 7 seconds. Saturday: 5-10/10-15/30+, NW 6′ @ 8. Sunday: no/no/10-15, NW 6 @ 8.

Random Morning Thoughts

We always have the best intentions when we commit to changes. Maybe we’re looking to lose weight, exercise more (no, not you #GorgeNormal people – don’t exercise more – rest more!), eat healthier, meditate, be more kind, etc. It can be very difficult to stick with a new habit.

That’s why it’s important to be vulnerable and ask for assistance in making changes. Leverage the power of people who are important to you, and ask them to keep you on task. By doing so, you’re leveraging the power of thousands of years of evolution – we are pack animals, and our systems are wired to be respond to the feedback of others. If we know other people are monitoring/encouraging us, we’re more likely to stick with a habit.

As a concrete example… I know full well that journaling helps me create new insights. Writing helps me make sense of my sometimes chaotic inner world. Writing calms me down. Writing might do that for you too – you have to try it to see. Anyway, writing makes my hand hurt, and writing takes time, so I wasn’t giving my journal the attention it needs. I enlisted my therapist’s help: “Hey, tell me to write in my journal each week,” I said. He did. And now I do.

Your social networks have a lot of power in your world – you already know that. Your friends want to support you. That’s what friends do! So ask them for help on whatever journey you’re on, and that’ll help you stay on the path. Have an awesome day!

Disclaimer required by my grad school program: I am not your therapist (but I could be in 700 days). I am your weather forecaster. Take everything I say with a grain of salt, and consult with your actual therapist about your mental health issues. One other thing: I plan to keep doing this forecast indefinitely, even when I am a therapist.

Road and Mountain Biking

It’s all open, with the exception of the 7 trees on Gunsight and the 20 trees on Gumjuwac. Enjoy! In road biking news, it’s going to be windy, but if you head up in elevation, you’ll probably find less wind.
