7/8 Incoming rain, rainbows and tack alert!

There wasn’t much wind on the river when I woke up this morning, just some light westerlies at 5-10 under cloudy, sprinkly sky. We'[ll see continued light wind this morning. As a secondary weather system approaches this afternoon, the wind will pick up to 15-18 east of Rowena, probably after 2pm. At that time, we…

Meet your forecaster: Temira

For almost 30 years, Temira (they/them) has been making the most of the Gorge: riding river swell, shredding powder, and cycling all the gravel and pavement and trails. This is Temira’s playground, their gym… their life’s work.

This passion led Temira to take a vow: In 2006, Temira decided to provide the most accurate, hyper-local weather forecasts possible. Today, Temira’s forecasts have become an essential resource for thousands of skiers, snowboarders, wind sports enthusiasts and Gorge commuters. With Temira’s guidance, you can plan ahead, time your sessions perfectly, and just plain have more fun! But the story doesn’t end there.

There’s “Temira’s Awesome Travel Advisory Service” and “Valuable Advice for Gardeners Inhabiting Neighboring Areas” – the Gorge’s premier microclimate forecast and gardening information. When winter storms, extreme heat, hail, or avalanches on SR-14 and I-84 threaten, TATAS keeps everyone and their tomatoes and giant pumpkins and cash crops safe.

Temira’s relentless efforts keep the forecasts flowing. But it ain’t easy: each forecast takes a couple of hours. That’s where you come in. By contributing, you’re not just supporting Temira’s passion project – you’re investing in the safety and well-being of the entire Gorge community. Your financial support ensures these essential forecasts remain accessible to all, free of charge.

Gorge wind forecast, continued…

Saturday sees a strong upper level low off the coast. Low pressure of the coast is most definitely not what we want to see when we’re hoping for wind. That said, sunshine in the desert and the inland progress of that low pressure system will give us some wind on Saturday. Expect 0-10 from Stevenson to Doug’s to start the day with 13-16 east of The Dalles. In the afternoon, we’ll have gusty 20-23 (maybe!) from Swell (or possibly Mosier) to The Dalles (or possibly Rufus).

Looking at Sunday, that offshore low moves inland and high pressure builds in over the Pacific. That is a better setup, assuming the low pressure system moves east early enough. We’ll start the day with 0-10 from Stevenson to The Dalles with 10-13 further east. As the low moves inland mid-afternoon (hopefully!), we’ll see gusty 26-30 from Hood River to Arlington. The wind will kick in at the western beaches earlier than the eastern beaches, and that may be crucial if there’s a delay in the onshore progress of the system.

Random Morning Thoughts

I’ve been thinking a lot over the last 24 hours about the shooting deaths of Philandro Castile and Alton Sterling, as well as the shooting of five police officers in Dallas last night. I live in a tiny town with a decent, kind police force. I also happen to be white and female. I’m lucky.

Some of you are not so lucky, and some of your friends are not so lucky. They are brown or black or of different abilities, and by virtue of that, they are victims of institutionalized oppression, unconscious bias, and outright hatred and discrimination (a friend of mine with a disability was denied service in a bar in Portland last night, for example).

We would all like to think we’re not racist, but we all have unconscious biases. You do. I do.

We may feel like the system is hopelessly rigged against non-White folks. It is. We may feel hopeless to impact the system. I do. And we can get angry about this, but anger won’t help. What will help is stopping the hatred. This is something all of us can do. When you hear hatred being voiced, speak out against it. It’s scary, but it’s the right thing to do. Oppression and killing arises out of hate and fear. By putting an end to the hate and fear, we can start to shift the way our society works.

Black lives matter. Brown lives matter. It’s time for White people to stop tolerating hatred. If you are White, use your privilege to speak up when others speak against. That will make you more awesome than you already are.

Disclaimer required by my grad school program: I am not your therapist (but I could be in 700 days). I am your weather forecaster. Take everything I say with a grain of salt, and consult with your actual therapist about your mental health issues. One other thing: I plan to keep doing this forecast indefinitely, even when I am a therapist.

Road and Mountain Biking

Well, we only got .04” of rain down here in Hood River, not enough to make our trails less dry. However, Timberline got .46” of rain, suggesting that Sandy Ridge and the 44 Road Trails might be under a tack alert right now. If you’re still hoping for tacky Syncline/Post/Hospital (Whoopdee is currently closed), keep hope alive: there’s more rain coming this evening. In road bike news, today looks good, with light wind and just sprinkles. Trailgate 2016 is at Billy Bob Snopark on Saturday from 10am on. Free demos, food, drinks and live music. And cold rain. Dress warmly, and expect tacky Fifteenmile!

Upcoming Events

Today’s events include the 7am Kickstand Coffee Run, where 4 miles of jogging gets you a free cup of coffee and a donut. The NW Cup mountain bike races start today at Skibowl and continue through Sunday.

Events tomorrow include Trailgate 2016 at Billy Bob snowpark tomorrow starting at 10am. Dress warm and head to the high country for free mountain bike demos, food, drinks, and music. There’s a work party on the Post Canyon trails meeting at Binn’s Hill Staging area at 9. There’s a free bootcamp workout at 8:30 at Lewis & Clark Park in The Dalles, and there’s a women’s mountain bike ride leaving Mountain View Cycles at 9.
Coming up Sunday, Corbett hosts the Larch Mountain Uphill Time Trial road bike race, with 3600′ of climbing at a full sprint pace.

Have an awesome day today!

Temira
