Saturday. WIND!!!

My goodness: the temperature and precipitation forecasts have been all over the map for the last few days, making it really hard to come up with a reliable forecast. This morning, for example, the snow level is 1500′ lower than expected, and it’s started snowing, rather than raining, on Mt. Hood. You can expect light…

Meet your forecaster: Temira

For almost 30 years, Temira (they/them) has been making the most of the Gorge: riding river swell, shredding powder, and cycling all the gravel and pavement and trails. This is Temira’s playground, their gym… their life’s work.

This passion led Temira to take a vow: In 2006, Temira decided to provide the most accurate, hyper-local weather forecasts possible. Today, Temira’s forecasts have become an essential resource for thousands of skiers, snowboarders, wind sports enthusiasts and Gorge commuters. With Temira’s guidance, you can plan ahead, time your sessions perfectly, and just plain have more fun! But the story doesn’t end there.

There’s “Temira’s Awesome Travel Advisory Service” and “Valuable Advice for Gardeners Inhabiting Neighboring Areas” – the Gorge’s premier microclimate forecast and gardening information. When winter storms, extreme heat, hail, or avalanches on SR-14 and I-84 threaten, TATAS keeps everyone and their tomatoes and giant pumpkins and cash crops safe.

Temira’s relentless efforts keep the forecasts flowing. But it ain’t easy: each forecast takes a couple of hours. That’s where you come in. By contributing, you’re not just supporting Temira’s passion project – you’re investing in the safety and well-being of the entire Gorge community. Your financial support ensures these essential forecasts remain accessible to all, free of charge.

This morning, for example, the snow level is 1500′ lower than expected, and it’s started snowing, rather than raining, on Mt. Hood. You can expect light snow showers today, followed by heavier snowfall tonight. The snow level will be 5000-5500′ this morning, falling to 2500′ by Sunday morning. We’ll see .1” water value (WV) during the day today, for less than 1” of new snow. That’ll be followed by .2-.3” WV tonight, for 2-3” of new snow. Wind today will be NW 20 this morning, becoming W 30-35 in the afternoon and overnight. Continued after the chart…

Gorge Wind Forecast

Looks like we’re headed into a very solid stretch of wind here in the Gorge. Saturday’s starting off windy with big gradients of .11 (pdx-dls) and .09 (dls-psc). River water temp is 53 degrees, and flow at The Dalles Dam is 324kcfs, quite a bit if you’re planning on trying the Rufus stretch of river – expect strong current. In the weather picture today, we have a trough of low pressure moving inland early, high pressure over the Pacific, and a cold front approaching this afternoon. Those features will have an impact on wind quality today – that said, synoptic scale pressure gradients are in place, and that’ll help keep the wind blowing.

With the western Gorge under the clouds, you’ll likely find gusty 15-18 from Stevenson to Mosier or so today. Head east of these low clouds (you’ll have to look at the sky for that), and you’ll find 28-32 pretty much all day. There’s the potential of a midday drop sometime between 11 and 2, followed by a late afternoon pickup back to the 28-32 range. Where should you go? I think most beaches east of Mosier will be a good call today, but do expect some gustiness from all the dynamics in the atmosphere.

Looking at tomorrow, we’ll still have that low pressure inland and that high pressure in the Pacific. You can expect the cloudy western Gorge to see 10-13 in the morning and 13-16 in the afternoon. Looks like the wind will slowly climb to 24-28+ from Rowena (maybe Mosier) to Maryhill by mid-afternoon, holding through sunset.

Monday currently looks like Dawn Patrol at 23-26 near Hood River with 26-30+ in the afternoon. Tuesday looks like Dawn Patrol at 26-30 from Hood River to Mosier, with strong wind lasting all day.

Looking at Jones Beach, there won’t be much today, but Sunday looks like 13-16 and Monday looks like 21-24. Sauvie’s looks like nothing the next two days but may hit 12-15 on Monday. The coast looks windy on Sunday and Monday – 20-25 or so on the North and Central Coast – with a 9-10′ swell at 13 seconds.

Random Morning Thoughts

One of the things that’s so awesome about psychotherapy (or insight meditation) is how it broadens a person’s experience of the world. We experience life in many different ways: through our thoughts, our senses, our emotions, our creation of meaning, and our limbic connection with others.

Most people rely on certain domains more than others. How do you take in the world? Do you analyze it? Intuit it? Feel it? Bring up related memories? Create stories in your mind about it? Each of these is a totally valid way to exist; each contributes something to your experience.

Sometimes one domain is enough, but often, much like in cooking where flavor is layered on top of flavor to create a rich and complex dish, multiple ways of experiencing the world can be layered on top of each other to create a fulfilling moment in time.

For example, I’m looking out my window at a stunning sunrise. I think about how lucky I am to live where I do. I feel gratitude and awe. I bring up memories of other mornings like this. I feel my awesome human community all around, and hear my sweet, kind neighbor moving about upstairs. I see whitecaps, and that brings windsurfing into the picture. I feel the solidity of my body in my chair. I tell myself that I’m lucky, that I’m loved, and that my life is enough just as it is. And with all that, this moment is enough.

So, play with this if you’re inspired to do so. Notice which domains you’re neglecting, and bring them into your world a little more. Create more layers to your life, like you add salt, pepper, and spices (and bacon fat?) to your cooking to make it taste better. You might be surprised what happens. Have an awesome day!

Gorge Weather Forecast

It’s mostly cloudy outside my window this morning, and the clouds are making their way eastward, where they will dissipate in the power of the desert sun and dry eastside air. Expect clouds all day with a chance of sprinkles tonight. Temps will be in the mid 50’s early and the low 60’s this afternoon. Moderate west wind. 9% chance of rainbows. Sunday looks mostly cloudy with sprinkles possible. Temps will be in the mid 40’s early and the upper 50’s in the afternoon. Moderate wind. 9% chance of rainbows. Monday looks partly cloudy. Temps will be in the low 40’s early and the upper 50’s in the afternoon. Strong wind. No rainbows.

Road and Mountain Biking

The trails are actually starting to get a little dusty, so it’s time for you to pray for a little rain. You may do that in whatever form of prayer feels best to you. In road biking news, unless you want to rie in a ton of wind, Sunday morning is your only chance until Wednesday morning. In other bike news, there’s a work party at the EasyCLIMB trail in Cascade Locks today, and Anson’s Bike Buddies has a donation drive tomorrow at Cascade Eye Center from 10-3.

Upcoming Events

Coming up today, there’s the Cherry Run 3k/5k/10k in The Dalles. Maupin has the Deschutes River Valley Time Trial Bike Race (that’ll be nice with all that wind). There’s a trail run at 8am in Post Canyon. There are Earth Day work parties at the EasyCLIMB, Hood River’s Waterfront Park, Mayer Park, Ainsworth, Rooster Rock, and on the Indian Creek Trail. The HRVHS girls lacrosse team has a car wash at Les Schwab today from noon to 3pm. Drop by and let them wash all the winter dirt and deicer off your car!

Sunday is the first swap meet of the season, happening at Windance. Also on Sunday, Anson’s Bike Buddies has a bike donation drive at Cascade Eye Center. Drop off your used or broken bike, receive a tax writeoff, and Anson and his friends will fix up the bike and give it to a local kid in need.

Coming up tomorrow, there are community yoga classes at 9am at Samadhi, 4pm at Pure Yoga in The Dalles, and 6pm at Pure Yoga in Hood River. There’s community meditation at 11am at Flow Yoga, pickup touch rugby at the Mosier School at 3pm, and ping pong at the Hood River Armory at 10am.

Have an awesome day today!
