4/22 Rain, snow, rainbows and LOTS of wind!

It’s a partly cloudy start to Friday on Mt. Hood, which is a lot better than the downpours currently happening in the Coast Range. If the models are correct, we’ll see showers on Mt. Hood starting up by noon, with the potential for thunder this afternoon. The snow level today will be 8000′. We’ll see…

Meet your forecaster: Temira

For almost 30 years, Temira (they/them) has been making the most of the Gorge: riding river swell, shredding powder, and cycling all the gravel and pavement and trails. This is Temira’s playground, their gym… their life’s work.

This passion led Temira to take a vow: In 2006, Temira decided to provide the most accurate, hyper-local weather forecasts possible. Today, Temira’s forecasts have become an essential resource for thousands of skiers, snowboarders, wind sports enthusiasts and Gorge commuters. With Temira’s guidance, you can plan ahead, time your sessions perfectly, and just plain have more fun! But the story doesn’t end there.

There’s “Temira’s Awesome Travel Advisory Service” and “Valuable Advice for Gardeners Inhabiting Neighboring Areas” – the Gorge’s premier microclimate forecast and gardening information. When winter storms, extreme heat, hail, or avalanches on SR-14 and I-84 threaten, TATAS keeps everyone and their tomatoes and giant pumpkins and cash crops safe.

Temira’s relentless efforts keep the forecasts flowing. But it ain’t easy: each forecast takes a couple of hours. That’s where you come in. By contributing, you’re not just supporting Temira’s passion project – you’re investing in the safety and well-being of the entire Gorge community. Your financial support ensures these essential forecasts remain accessible to all, free of charge.

Gorge Wind Forecast

Well… hmm… this is quite a stretch of west wind coming our way. Today starts off with light westerlies and 6am gradients of .05 (pdx-dls) and .03 (dls-psc). We’ll see the westerlies pick up to 13-16 from Stevenson to Mosier midday, picking up to gusty (and possibly thundery) 23-26 from Rowena to Arlington late this afternoon. Saturday starts off with gusty W 7-11 in the western Gorge with 21-24 in the eastern Gorge. We’ll see the wind build steadily during the day as high pressure builds off the coast. That’ll give us W 28-32 from Rowena eastward to Threemile in the afternoon. If you are driving out past John Day Dam, keep your eyes open for flocks of bighorn sheep along the road. There are lots of them. Also watch for unicorns and rainbows on the river.

Sunday starts off with W 5-10 everywhere, picks up to 17-21 midday and 24-28 east of The Dalles in the afternoon. As of right now, both Monday and Tuesday look like Swell to Doug’s days, with 28-32 both days. YES! If you are headed out east, remember that The Dalles Dam is reading 332kcfs right now. That’s a lot of water moving through the river, and is going to make for an awful lot of current in the Maryhill/Rufus section of river. River water temp is 53 degrees.

Random Morning Thoughts

I’m thinking this morning about that old cliché, “money can’t buy you happiness.” We American are so often in pursuit of more on so many levels: more square feet in our houses, more car, more money, more skill level at our sports, more speed on our bikes, more friends, more power, more, more more. We live for that momentary sense of accomplishment or competence or joy in a new toy.

Because of this, we miss that we are enough, just by ourselves, just as we are. Sure, life can suck if you’re struggling to simply make ends meet, and life can be unfairly difficult if you’re not a member of the privileged white male category. And we can rail against those things and try to change them. However, even changing the systems around us doesn’t change one important thing: we are enough, just as we are, as flawed as we are.

If we can learn that in a visceral way, we can develop a certain sense of equanimity that underlies everything else we do. When we F up, we understand that we’re still okay, and just have more to learn about being human. When we’re oppressed, we understand that it’s not us – it’s a system, and that gives us some peace. And when we do achieve something new – money, toy, competence – it doesn’t determine our sense of self-worth. It just becomes a nice addition to our day. So, I know it’s hard to believe, but you are enough, just as you are. Have an awesome day.

Gorge Weather Forecast

It’s partly cloudy out there this morning, but if we meteorologists are hopeful for some sprinkles or thunderstorms this afternoon. Temps will be in the low 50’s early and the mid 60’s this afternoon. Light to moderate westerlies. 32% chance of rainbows. Saturday looks partly cloudy to mostly cloudy in the morning with sprinkles possible. If we’re lucky, we’ll get a shot of rain Saturday afternoon, but it’s hard to say if the rain will make it far enough east to drench us. Temps will be in the upper 40’s early and the low 60’s in the afternoon. 87% chance of rainbows. Sunday looks rainy. Temps will be in the upper 40’s early and the upper 50’s in the afternoon. Light west wind early, strong west wind later. 99% chance of rainbows.

Road and Mountain Biking

The biggest news in trail news is that Float On! is open. What, you ask, is that? It’s the new trail off Middle School (in Post Canyon) that connects into the Kleeway. If you like awesome, you’ll like it. If you like awesome, you could also just sit at the bottom of the Kleeway and look at the big grins on the faces of people who just rode that trail. Thanks to the HRATS, Jason Wells, Ben Ketler, and of course Matt Klee, may he rest in peace, for making this trail a reality. In other news, Surveyor’s is a total no-go due to downed trees. Falls Creek is open to the Horse Camp. Siouxon is open, and if you’ve never ridden it, you should. Huffman Peak is not open. In road biking news, Sunday morning is your best shot for a light wind ride. Morning, I tell you. Be done by the afternoon.

Upcoming Events

Today is Friday, and as on all Fridays, you can enjoy a free cup of coffee and a donut at Kickstand Coffee just for running 4 miles. There’s a free yoga class at the Heartgate Sanctuary in Oak Grove today at 4:30pm. The Northwest Cherry Festival kicks off in The Dalles today.

Coming up tomorrow, there’s the Cherry Run 3k/5k/10k in The Dalles. Maupin has the Deschutes River Valley Time Trial Bike Race (that’ll be nice with all that wind). There’s a trail run at 8am in Post Canyon. There are Earth Day work parties tomorrow at the EasyCLIMB, Hood River’s Waterfront Park, Mayer Park, Ainsworth, Rooster Rock, and on the Indian Creek Trail. Sunday is the first swap meet of the season, happening at Windance. On Sunday, Anson’s Bike Buddies will be taking used bike donations on Sunday, whether those bikes work or not, at Cascade Eye Center from 10-3.

Have an awesome day today!
