Gorge Wind Forecast
It’s Thursday morning, and there’s a bit of a westerly breeze on the river, accompanied by a .05 (pdx-dls) and .05 (dls-psc) gradient. The river temp is currently 52 degrees, and flow at The Dalles Dam right now is 322kcfs, quite a bit if you’re thinking of heading to the Maryhill stretch of river – that’s a lot of current. Anyway, expect westerlies at 13-16 near Swell for a little while this morning. The wind will back off to 5-10 or so midday and pick back up to W 13-16 from Stevenson to The Dalles late this afternoon as a weather system approaches.
That weather system will move through on Friday afternoon, giving us a shot at stronger, but gusty, westerlies. Friday looks to start off with W 5-10 from Stevenson to The Dalles with W 15-18 east of The Dalles. As that weather system pushes inland late in the afternoon, we’ll see the wind pick up to gusty 21-24 from The Dalles to Arlington.
Saturday sees an upper low move inland, and that will kick off some stronger west wind. You can expect clouds and gusty 12-15 from Stevenson to The Dalles on Saturday. Beaches further east will start off with gusty W 24-28 and picks up to gusty 28-32 in the afternoon. Sunday currently looks like a light and variable start, but high pressure building off the coast sets us up for 25-29 in the afternoon. If the long range models are correct, Monday looks windy enough to tempt me to skip school. If only my Monday class weren’t so awesome… *sigh*
Random Morning Thoughts
I’m thinking this morning about that old cliché, “money can’t buy you happiness.” We American are so often in pursuit of more on so many levels: more square feet in our houses, more car, more money, more skill level at our sports, more speed on our bikes, more friends, more power, more, more more. We live for that momentary sense of accomplishment or competence or joy in a new toy.
Because of this, we miss that we are enough, just by ourselves, just as we are. Sure, life can suck if you’re struggling to simply make ends meet, and life can be unfairly difficult if you’re not a member of the privileged white male category. And we can rail against those things and try to change them. However, even changing the systems around us doesn’t change one important thing: we are enough, just as we are, as flawed as we are.
If we can learn that in a visceral way, we can develop a certain sense of equanimity that underlies everything else we do. When we F up, we understand that we’re still okay, and just have more to learn about being human. When we’re oppressed, we understand that it’s not us – it’s a system, and that gives us some peace. And when we do achieve something new – money, toy, competence – it doesn’t determine our sense of self-worth. It just becomes a nice addition to our day. So, I know it’s hard to believe, but you are enough, just as you are. Have an awesome day.

Road and Mountain Biking
A kind person sent me some information yesterday: Falls Creek is open to the Horse Camp, Siouxon is open, and Huffman Peak is NOT open. Other than that, it rained here yesterday, so you’re probably going to find some really nice dirt this morning on the other local trails. In road biking news, the wind will back off to almost nothing midday today, and with a forecast high of 75, you’re looking a near-epic road biking day.
