Friday. Ready for more summer?

Mt. Hood had a bit of a makeover the last couple of days, with 9” of new snow in the last 48 hours and half a foot in the last 24 hours. That’ll make for some great turns this morning, especially on the groom where 6” of new snow can completely revamp the quality of…

Meet your forecaster: Temira

For almost 30 years, Temira (they/them) has been making the most of the Gorge: riding river swell, shredding powder, and cycling all the gravel and pavement and trails. This is Temira’s playground, their gym… their life’s work.

This passion led Temira to take a vow: In 2006, Temira decided to provide the most accurate, hyper-local weather forecasts possible. Today, Temira’s forecasts have become an essential resource for thousands of skiers, snowboarders, wind sports enthusiasts and Gorge commuters. With Temira’s guidance, you can plan ahead, time your sessions perfectly, and just plain have more fun! But the story doesn’t end there.

There’s “Temira’s Awesome Travel Advisory Service” and “Valuable Advice for Gardeners Inhabiting Neighboring Areas” – the Gorge’s premier microclimate forecast and gardening information. When winter storms, extreme heat, hail, or avalanches on SR-14 and I-84 threaten, TATAS keeps everyone and their tomatoes and giant pumpkins and cash crops safe.

Temira’s relentless efforts keep the forecasts flowing. But it ain’t easy: each forecast takes a couple of hours. That’s where you come in. By contributing, you’re not just supporting Temira’s passion project – you’re investing in the safety and well-being of the entire Gorge community. Your financial support ensures these essential forecasts remain accessible to all, free of charge.

That’ll make for some great turns this morning, especially on the groom where 6” of new snow can completely revamp the quality of the shred. Expect sunshine on the slopes all day today. The free air freezing level will be 4000′ early and 6000′ in the afternoon. You’ll want to ride early, because the high sun angle will turn that new snow heavy and sticky by the afternoon. Wind today will be NNW 20 early, fading to light west wind in the afternoon. Continued after the chart.

Mt. Hood Snow Forecast, continued…

Saturday looks sunny all day long. The free air freezing level will be 7000′ in the morning and 10,000′ in the afternoon. Temps at 5000′ will max out in the mid 40’s, and the wind will be light and variable. I’ve heard that T-Line plans to open Palmer to the top on Saturday, so that should be fun.

Sunday also looks sunny. The free air freezing level will be 11,000′ or so in the morning and 13,000′ or so in the afternoon. 5000′ temps will max out in the mid 50’s. Wind will be light S early and SE 15-20 in the afternoon. Mt. Hood Meadows has the Popina Suits and Boots event happening on Sunday, and with temps in the 50’s on the hill, wearing a bikini or boardshorts isn’t going to be too much of a stretch.

Looking ahead to Monday, it’s going to be a warm one in the valley and pretty darn warm on Mt. Hood too. The free air freezing level will be 13,000′ all day long, and 5000′ temps will max out around 60 degrees. That’s warm enough, as far as I’m concerned, to spend the day in a bikini on the deck. Wind on Monday will be SE 15-20 all day.

Gorge Wind Forecast

Friday’s starting off with moderate west wind driven by a moderate west gradient: .09 (pdx-dls) and .06 (dls-psc). The marine clouds at 6am were past my house here in Hood River, indicating your best plan for at least the first half of the day will include a short drive eastward to the sunshine. Don’t drive too far, as high pressure will build inland today, shutting off the wind in the eastern Gorge, most likely.

You can expect 16-19 from Stevenson to Arlington for Dawn Patrol and the early morning session. By mid-morning, the wind should pick up to 21-24 from Swell to Maryhill, maybe at Stevenson and Arlington too. Models indicate the wind will back off to 16-19 this afternoon, with sites east of Maryhill dropping off even more. River temp is 51 degrees.

Saturday starts off light and variable everywhere with sunshine beating down on the river. In the afternoon, the easterlies will pick up to 10-15 at Stevenson and Rooster Rock. Sunday starts off sunny with east wind at 25-30 at Rooster and 15-20 at Stevenson. The easterly gradient will encompass the entire Gorge in the afternoon, meaning we’ll see the easterlies continue in the western Gorge and pick up to 7-11 from Viento to The Dalles. Monday currently looks like E 20-25, a perfect setup for riding a bike to Portland!

Random Morning Thoughts

I was talking to a friend of mine once about some stuff that was going on in her life. She’d pretty much worked herself into a panic. She felt like she had to make a decision about the situation, and that making a decision would have an irreversible impact. Sometimes that’s the case, but most of the time the world is a little less black and white.

The tricky thing is that when we get freaked out about something, our worldview naturally narrows. That’s just part of getting anxious and feeling threatened – our nervous system starts yelling, “Do something, and do it now!”We lose the ability to see a bigger picture. If we’re amazingly super awesome and extraordinarily self-aware, we can catch that happening and step back for a wider view.

If we’re merely human, this is a good place to call in friends. An all-important question to ask when we call on our social support network is this: “What am I missing?” If we’re so stressed out that we’re freaking out, we’re probably not seeing all our options – that’s why we’re freaking out. So, hold on to that question: “What am I missing here?”, and ask it of your friends next time you rely on them for support. The answer might just surprise you and bring you relief. Have an awesome day!

Gorge Weather Forecast

It’s partly cloudy here in the Gorge this morning, and that’ll be the case this morning. By afternoon, sunshine takes over, driving the clouds away and leaving the sky bright blue. Temps will be in the upper 40’s early and the low 60’s this afternoon. Moderate west wind. 1% chance of rainbows.

Saturday looks sunny. Temps will be in the low 40’s early and the low 70’s in the afternoon. Light wind. No rainbows. Sunday looks warm and sunny. Temps will be in the mid 40’s early and the upper 70’s in the afternoon. Moderate east wind. Monday’s headed for a record, with a forecast high of 85 degrees.

Road and Mountain Biking

We received approximately .14” of rain here in the Gorge yesterday, pretty much ending by 3pm. That’s enough to make Post a little slippery, but it should be pretty tacky by this afternoon. I will sacrifice myself and go check it out. Woe is me. Nestor, Whoopdee, Hospital Hill, Kitchen Sink and Syncline should all be good today. In road biking news, moderate wind will mess with you, but tomorrow looks off the charts: light wind early with light easterlies in the afternoon. You won’t find a better day to ride Sevenmile counter-clockwise. Sunday brings stronger east wind, and that will impact your road biking in the afternoon. Speaking of Sevenmile, the Cherry of a Ride group ride takes place in The Dalles on Sunday.

Upcoming Events

Coming up Friday morning, there’s the Kickstand Coffee Run: 4.1 miles that earns you a free cup of coffee and a donut. Also Friday: community Hatha Yoga at the Heartgate Sanctuary in Oak Grove at 4:30pm. Looking ahead to Sunday, it’s the Sandy Ridge Super D, and looking at next weekend, Anson’s Bike Buddies has a bike donation drive at Cascade Eye Center on Sunday from 10am to 3pm. If you have a bike you’re not using, donate, and ABB will fix it up and give it to a local in need!

Have an awesome day today!
