Looks like today will be the last sunny day on Mt. Hood for a few days, and it’s going to be a good one. It was cold enough overnight that the snow set up, meaning there will be excellent corn snow today. On top of that, clouds this afternoon should keep the snow from getting sticky. Hooray! We will see some light rain late tonight, but that’s not going to impact your experience today. The free air freezing level today will be 10,000′ early, dropping to 9000′ in the afternoon. We’ll see a trace to .1” water value of rain after midnight. Temps at 5000′ will max out around 50 degrees. Wind today will be W 10 in the morning, becoming SW 10 in the afternoon and SW 20 overnight. Continued after the chart.

Gorge Wind Forecast
We’ve had a delightful couple days of west wind, and today will continue that streak. If you’d like to get a daily double, head up to the mountain for good spring skiing this morning, and come to the Gorge for wind this afternoon! This morning is starting off with solid west gradients: .12 (pdx-dls) and .07 (dls-psc). That’s a great start, but something to keep in mind today is that an approaching weak weather system this afternoon will have an impact on the wind today.
Expect 20-23 right off the bat from Swell to Mosier with 13-16 further east, all the way to Arlington. The wind may pick up for a little while in the far east Gorge, but by midday, the strongest, steadiest wind will end at Maryhill. You can expect 24-28 for the 10am-2pm window from Viento to Doug’s, possibly Maryhill too. After that (and maybe even a bit earlier), the wind will back off to gusty18-22 everywhere expect Stevenson.
Tuesday morning sees the western Gorge under clouds from that weak weather system, meaning the steadiest wind will shift further east. That said, models predict a very up-and-down day. The western Gorge will likely see gusty 11-15 from Stevenson to Doug’s. Further east, there will be periods of 23-26. Your best bet for reliable wind on Tuesday is probably going to be at Arlington, but honestly, it doesn’t look all that awesome. That said, wind is wind!
Wednesday looks light and variable and so does Thursday. As of right now, it’s looking like the westerlies will return on Friday.
Random Morning Thoughts
I’ve been thinking a lot about systems and institutions lately, because I interact with quite a few. A couple things come up for me when thinking about this. First, systems seem a lot like people in some ways: when they get stressed, they respond inflexibly to other people and other systems. Second, I’ve been thinking about our interactions with the institutions around us. Our model for how to interact with a system comes from our experiences with systems, most fundamentally from our family system.
It seems to me that institutional stress is transmitted to the members of the institution, causing the individuals to act in rigid, reactive ways. For example, teachers in a poorly-funded school system are more likely to be stressed out than teachers in a well-funded system. It’s not just the stress of working under such conditions – it’s that plus the system’s stress coming from the top down.
Add to that the bottom-up stress of unresolved childhood issues (we all have them to some extent, unless we were very, very lucky!), and people in reactive systems can find themselves behaving in unexpected and reactive ways, as if they were engaging with their family, not their workplace or school.
It’s just a conceptualization, but it’s something I’ve seen play out around me recently in both stressed and unstressed institutions. It’s interesting, I think. Maybe you will find something in it too – if you’re working in a stressed institution, make sure you’re aware of the stress around you, and give yourself extra space for R & R if you can. Have an awesome day.

Temps today will be right around 50 early and in the upper 60’s this afternoon. Moderate wind. No rainbows.
Tuesday looks partly cloudy and sprinkly early, sunny midday, and rainy after 7pm. Temps will be in the upper 40’s early and the low 60’s in the afternoon. Moderate west wind. 96% chance of rainbows. Wednesday looks partly cloudy to start and cloudy in the afternoon with rain after 3pm or so. Temps will be in the mid 40’s early and the low 60’s in the afternoon. Light wind. 72% chance of rainbows.

Road and Mountain Biking
I went for a quick lap in Post yesterday evening, and it was a combination of excellent dirt and dry dirt. So that’s what you can expect right now – a mixed bag of mostly lovely riding. Last I heard there was still some snow on the upper half of Dirt Surfer (170). If you have information to the contrary, please let me know. And if you’ve ridden Nestor Peak recently, we’d all love to know the snow situation over there. Other than that, NO DOGS on Hospital Hill. Mobius is open. The flowers are out on Whoopdee. In road biking news, the Hood River Valley is is bloom, so get on your road bike. It’ll be light wind on Wednesday and Thursday, so thems the best days!
