It’s another gorgeous, sunny day on Mt. Hood, and it happens to be Skibowl’s last day. As always, the last day of the season at Skibowl is free, so if you’d like to check out a new place, head on over there. Make sure you have the nachos at the bar after you’re done. They’re the best on Mt. Hood, hands down. The weather will stay sunny today. The free air freezing level will be 12,000′ with 5000′ temps maxing out in the low 50’s. Wind today will be W 10 in the morning and NW 15 in the afternoon. Continued after the chart.

Gorge Wind Forecast
Saturday certainly turned into a nice day on the river, didn’t it? I was able to get out for a short Dawn Patrol session before I made my way into Portland for my training. Windsurfing for me meant no forecast for you yesterday, but that sounds like a fair tradeoff to me! Hopefully all of y’all got on the river yesterday too!
Sunday’s starting off with solid westerly gradients of .13 (pdx-dls) and .04 (dls-psc). Expect Dawn Patrol at 18-22 at Swell, ramping up to 24-27ish for the mid-morning session from Viento to Mosier. The wind should fill in from Stevenson to Doug’s by early afternoon at 22-25. The Maryhill stretch of river is 50/50 for 22-25 today, but you can expect at least 16-19 out there this afternoon. What wind we have in the far east Gorge this morning will fade away by late morning, so driving out to Arlington isn’t going to be your best plan today.
Monday starts off with a good wind setup, but an approaching weak weather system in the afternoon will disrupt things. You can expect 21-24+ right off the bat Monday morning near Swell, picking up to 23-26 from Viento to Mosier for the mid-morning session. Things get a little wonky in the afternoon as the stable setup succumbs to that approaching system; expect the wind to turn gusty. In addition, the wind will back off to 18-22 at all locations expect for Stevenson.
Tuesday sees a weather system move through in the morning, leaving the western Gorge under low clouds. If you’re after wind on Tuesday, you’ll need to drive east, at least as far as Doug’s, but more likely further east. If you do that, you’re going to find gusty, up-and-down 23-27+ for much of the day.
Random Morning Thoughts
I grew up in a family where the interactional dynamic was one of win-lose. This came up for me yesterday at my training in a different context, where I realized that I had, in essence lost many battles but won the war; after all, I have an amazing life where I get to pursue my passions, give back to my community by using my talents, and where people thank and reward me on a daily basis for just doing what I love doing.
Wow. I feel so much gratitude. And I’m still thinking in terms of win-lose, as many of us do in many situations.
This win-lose thing really got me thinking. So much of what we do is conceptualized in terms of winning and losing or getting ahead of others. If we stop to look around us, though, we see that there are many, many people living decent lives around us. And generally speaking, they’ve had to rely on others to get where they are at, and we’re not losing because they’re winning. More than that, working with others often leads us to come to solutions that create a better outcome that two people working alone.
When we strive to get ahead in isolation, we make assumptions and miss out on options that may bring us even more benefit. We may think that we’ll be better off alone, but we are social beings at our core; we’re meant to work with others in order to get ahead. That’s how we humans took over the planet. It’s how we’ll craft a society where we can continue to thrive on this overcrowded warming hunk of rock. So, the next time you find yourself caught in a win-lose, me-you, us-them dynamic, stop and see if there might be another way. Have an awesome day.

White Sprinter Van of the Day
Road and Mountain Biking
The dirt is excellent. What more can I say? Oh, Mobius has reopened, dogs are not allowed on Hospital Hill (no, really, don’t piss off the landowners, please.), and the poison oak is getting all groovy on Syncline. In road biking news, we’re looking at moderate (or stronger) west wind for the next three days. Today, however, you’ll likely be able to escape the westerlies by riding in the upper valleys, at least for the first 2/3 of the day.
Upcoming Events
