Mt. Hood Snow Forecast, continued…
Friday looks sunny for much of the day, turning cloudy in the afternoon. Precip starts up around 7pm, continuing overnight. The snow level will be 11,000′ early, falling to 7500′ with the arrival of the first wave of precip, and dropping to 5500′ with the second wave. By Saturday morning, the snow level will be around 4500′. This, of course, makes for tricky forecasting. We’ll see a total of around .7” water value (WV) Friday night. It looks like the first .3” will fall as rain. The next .4” will be a mix of rain and snow, giving us 1-3” of new snow. Wind on Friday will be SW 10-15 early, SW15-20 in the afternoon and evening, and W 30 after midnight.

See below for details.
Saturday starts out with a short burst of snowfall, followed by clear sky all day and clouds in the evening. The snow level will be 4500′ early, dropping briefly to 2500′, and then rising to 5500′ for the rest of the day. We’ll see just .1” WV in the morning, for 1” of new snow. Wind will be W 30-35 for the first half of the day, fading to SW 5-10 in the afternoon and evening.
Sunday starts off cloudy, sees precipitation midday, and ends up partly cloudy. It’s a tricky forecast – the snow level will be 6000-6500′ early, dropping to 5500′ with eh arrival of the precip and falling to 3500′ in the evening. My best guess at this point is that we’ll see .7” WV, starting as mixed precip and switching to snow. That gives us 3-5” of wet snow. Maybe. The wind forecast is a little easier to call: SW 15-20 early, SW 20-25 midday, and W 40 in the afternoon.

Gorge Wind Forecast
It’s Thursday. You can expect east wind at 30-35 this morning, 20-25 midday, and 30-35 this afternoon. Friday starts off with east 20-25, fades to nothing by early afternoon, and turns to W 10-13 after 4pm, picking up a bit in the evening. Saturday looks pretty darn okay on the river, if you can deal with 41 degree water and air temps in the upper 40’s to low 50’s. Expect west wind at 26-30 east of Hood River from 7am-3pm. It’s probably going to be gusty and 20-23 from Viento to Hood River, but it’s possible we’ll see decent conditions near town too. Sunday looks light and variable early with westerlies at 23-26 in the afternoon.
Random Morning Thoughts
The more I read, the more I self-study, and the more I talk to other people, the more I become convinced that there is no such thing as “normal”. Although we create these things called “normal curves” to delineate behavior that is closer to or further away from the average, all behaviors and experiences are on the spectrum.
In other words, each of us has a unique collection of past and present experiences and ways of being in the world. That “unique” piece is key, because what it means is that there is no “normal”. We may have similar experiences to someone else, but we’ve created different stories and different ways of responding. Normal, I propose, is just a dumb semantic concept that creates a group of people who are “okay” and a group of people who are “not-so-okay”.
You are okay. You are normal, even if you don’t feel that way in comparison to others. They’re just normal in a different way. You can be normal and okay and still want to change things about yourself. Not because you hate yourself, not because you’re angry at yourself, not because you want to be someone else. Real change happens because you are okay with where you’re at, and you want to experience the world in a different way. It’s paradoxical, but accepting who you are leads to more positive emotions, and that leads to change (maybe because acceptance is change).
Anyway, we’re all normal. And we’re all weird and quirky in different ways. It’s only judging our uniqueness that makes it good or bad. Embrace yourself because you’re awesome (find one tiny part of yourself that you find awesome, if nothing else), and have an awesome day.

Road and Mountain Biking
I know the dirt’s great at Syncline. I also got a report from Post yesterday that the dirt is good there. So now you have options! Yay. The road biking will be good too, but watch out for east wind, especially this afternoon, especially the higher up you go. You’ll find nice road biking tomorrow too, and nice mountain biking, at least until the evening when the rain hits.
