Random Morning Thoughts
This grad program I’m in brings up all sorts of fascinating and disruptive emotions. The one I find most interesting is shame. Even writing about that emotion is difficult – one of shame’s purposes is to keep us silent, to keep us from straying too far from what our minds consider safe.
When we try new things and fail, shame can arise. When our behaviors stray too far from what is considered “normal”, shame can arise. This serves to keep us within the norms of society, and that, evolutionarily speaking, keeps us safe within a group.
There’s also power in being able to turn towards shame, especially when it’s blocking us from stepping outside our comfort zone. Next time you feel ashamed about something, take a look at what triggered it. There’s something really important to be learned there, if you can bear the agony of experiencing shame. Perhaps you did something unskillful – this is your chance to understand why you did that and change the behaviors that led to it. Perhaps you stepped outside your comfort zone, and didn’t do so well. This is your chance to applaud yourself for trying, even if you didn’t get the results you wanted.
Be gentle when you see shame. Be curious about its cause. There’s something really awesome to be learned there. Have an awesome day.

Gorge Weather Forecast
It’s another cloudy start to the day in the Gorge, and it’s going to get rainy. Thank goodness, because we just caught up to the monthly average rainfall yesterday. I was kinda worried we were going to have an average month of precip. But no. Not with the forecast for the next few days. Expect temps today to be in the low 40’s early and the upper 40’s in the afternoon. We’ll see showers this morning with steady rain after 1pm, continuing through 7pm. East wind early, strong west wind after 4pm. 39% chance of rainbows.
Tomorrow will likely start out with low clouds and sprinkles, with the showers ending by noon or 1pm. Temps will be in the mid 30’s early and the upper 40’s in the afternoon. Light wind all day. Sunday starts off dry and turns quite wet between noon and 6pm. Temps will be in the mid 30’s early and the upper 40’s in the afternoon. It’s pretty likely the upper valleys will see snow early afternoon before a switch to rain. East wind early, light westerlies late in the day. 27% chance of rainbows.

White Sprinter Van of the Day
Road and Mountain Biking
As if the trails weren’t wet enough, we received .6” of rain yesterday (putting us over the monthly average, FYI), which leaves Post, Whoopdee, and Hospital too muddy to ride. Syncline’s probably in the same boat. With another round of heavy rain expected this afternoon and evening, the trails will be too muddy to ride again tomorrow. Looks like we might see a short window on Sunday morning. Stay tuned. Out on the roads, you may find dry-enough weather this morning, and it’s also possible you’ll find dry-enough weather tomorrow afternoon.
Upcoming Events
We all missed the group run this morning because I slept in. You know, the Kickstand Coffee Run at 7am: 4.1 miles that earns you a free cup of coffee and a donut. There’s a trail run in Post Canyon Saturday at 8am, and there’s a rail Jam at Mt. Hood Meadows on Saturday at 3pm.
Have an awesome day today!
