Gorge Wind Forecast

Today’s a bit tricky to forecast, as an upper level low moving basically over the top of the Columbia this afternoon will be the driving force for the wind. Expect light wind early and east 20-25 mid-morning. As that low moves overhead, we’ll see west wind at 30-40 for a brief period in the western Gorge from Rooster to the Tunnels. It’s likely the wind will be less, and super gusty, from Hood River to Maryhill. You can expect E 30ish way out east late in the afternoon.

Friday starts out with light east wind and picks up to E 20-30 mid-morning. As a weather system moves through in the afternoon, we’ll see W 20-23 from the Tunnels to The Dalles, with 26-30 further east. Saturday looks like W 5-10 early and E 10-15 in the afternoon. Sunday starts with E 30-35 and goes light and variable in the afternoon.

Random Morning Thoughts

As many of you know, I have a bit of a fascination with mindfulness. I think it’s the key to feeling happier, more connected to others, and more in control of our lives. A friend of mine recently suggested the fantastic book, Mindfulness in Plain English, so I’m passing the suggestion along.

One of the things I like so much about mindfulness is the ability it gives you to create distance between your emotional world and your actual experience. For example, if you’re sad and not mindful, sad is pretty much the sum total of your world. You’ll engage with that sadness, and in engaging, you feed it. You perpetuate it. You let it dominate your perspective on life.

In mindfulness, you just notice the sadness. You hold it with compassion. You don’t argue with it, ask it to go away, get angry at it, nor do you beat yourself up over it. You just watch it and keep on with the rest of your life. You can be sad, and still appreciate rainbows and wildflowers and new snow.

The cool thing about watching an emotion without engaging it is that you get to see it come and go. So often we think our negative emotions will last forever. In mindfulness, we learn that isn’t the case. We learn that our inner landscape is constantly changing. And by watching, somehow, we find that positive mind states start to arise more and more frequently. It’s magic, really. Ok, I think it’s because humans are organized toward growth and positive change, but sometimes it feels like magic that the negativity lessens and the positivity increases.

I guess what I’m saying is this: next time an unpleasant emotion bubbles up, know that it will fade away. Give yourself the luxury of not worrying about it. Give yourself the gift of not identifying with it. Just let it be – approach it as you’d approach a sleeping baby: with love, compassion, and quiet. Just watch. And see what happens. Have an awesome day.

Gorge Weather Forecast

After sleeping for 10 hours last night, I woke up to cloudy sky. Enjoy that cloudy sky, because the heavens are going to open up later on, drenching you. Temps will be in the low 40’s this morning and upper 40’s this afternoon. Expect rain and showers (heavy at times) from noon all the way through tomorrow morning. East wind early, strong west wind after 2pm. 99.58% chance of rainbows.

Tomorrow starts out cloudy with a few sprinkles, becoming rainy with drenching periods from noon to 10pm. Temps will be in the low 40’s early and the mid 40’s in the afternoon. East wind early, moderate west wind after noon. 99% chance of rainbows.

Saturday may start out with some leftover sprinkles, but we should see partly cloudy to mostly cloudy sky for much of the day. Temps will be in the mid 30’s early and the upper 40’s in the afternoon. Light west wind early, light east wind in the afternoon. 47% chance of rainbows, but only early in the morning.

Road and Mountain Biking

Seems like it was rather wet yesterday – .32” to be exact – meaning the trails, especially Post, are once again too muddy to ride. If you sneak out early this morning for a road bike ride, you’re likely to stay dry. Later today, you’ll get very wet.

Upcoming Events

Today is Thursday. There’s community yoga at 6:30pm at Samadhi. There’s Zumba at the Parkdale Community Center at 6:30, and there’s Tai Chi at Our Savior Church in Bingen at 6:30. Coming up tomorrow morning at 7am, it’s the Kickstand Coffee Run: 4.1 miles that earns you a free cup of coffee and a donut. There’s a rail Jam at Mt. Hood Meadows on Saturday at 3pm.

Have an awesome day today!
