Random Morning Thoughts
I was thinking this morning about that Cartesian mind-body split thing again. Well, to be perfectly honest I was thinking first about Bernie over Hillary by 21% last night in New Hampshire. Anyway, I’m still sick, and I’m also having trouble sleeping. I have absolutely zero doubt that I will recover from this double-whammy of stomach virus and cold virus. I have, however, managed to work myself into quite a state worrying about getting enough sleep. And that, of course, is keeping me from getting enough sleep.
I’m sure many of you have played that game before.
It’s funny – most of the time we have faith in the power of our physical bodies to heal. But when it comes to the mind, we’re not so certain, are we? We get a cold, and we’re sure we’ll be fine in a few weeks. We get depressed or anxious or have a bout of insomnia, and we think we’ll need to be on meds for the rest of our life.
We do this in part because we’ve convinced ourselves that the mind and body are two different things. And yet, if you go looking for anxiety, depression, or tiredness, it’s not just in your head, is it? You’ll find those things hanging out in your body in the form of somatic symptoms.
It’s time to give our mind-body a little more credit. Illnesses of the mind (in many cases, not all, much like diseases) will heal, just as illnesses of the body will heal. We need to be kind and patient and gentle with ourselves when our emotions are hurting, just as we do when our bodies are hurting. After all, our minds and bodies are not separate. We just pretend they are, and in doing so, we keep ourselves from healing as quickly as we can. Have faith in your mind. In most cases, it too will heal itself. Have an awesome day.

Road and Mountain Biking
According to the fine folks at Dirty Fingers, the dirt is great on both Hospital Hill and Syncline. Lots of people have been out shredding perfect dirt in Post Canyon too. Whoopdee, I’m sorry to say, is still to wet and snowy to ride, but don’t worry – you have all spring and summer to get it.
