The Mt. Hood snow forecast is nowhere near as interesting at the Gorge weather forecast this morning. After all, rainbows trump a couple feet of new snow, right? Kidding, kidding! The snow forecast, finally, is looking pretty good for Mt. Hood, with the possible exception of a period of rain on Saturday afternoon. It is time, people, to wax your skis or board, to reglue your climbing skins, and to dig all that gear out of the summer closet. Ski season is on! Continued after the chart.

Mt. Hood Snow Forecast, continued…
It is snowing up there this morning, and Timberline is reporting 8” of new. Fantastic! Snowfall will continue all day today. Hooray! The snow level will be 5000′ early, fluctuating a bit during the day and falling to 3000′ tonight. We’ll see .5” water value (WV) between now and 4pm, for 4-5” of new snow. Then we’ll see an additional 1” WV tonight, for 9-12” of new. Wind today will be WSW 50 for much of the day, falling to WSW 20 by tomorrow morning.
Tomorrow starts off partly to mostly cloudy with heavy snowfall returning around noon and continuing through Saturday morning. The snow level will be 3000′ early, 1500′ midday, and 3000′ overnight. We’ll see, if the models are correct, 1” WV between noon and 4pm, for 10-12” of snow. Then we’ll see another 1” WV between 4pm tomorrow and 4am Saturday for another 10-12” of new snow. Models do tend to overestimate orographic snowfall, so it’s possible we’ll see less, but I think 12-18” of new over the 24 hour period is likely if nothing changes. Wind on Friday will be WSW 20 early, SW 30 midday, and W 40 overnight.

See below for details.
Saturday starts off partly cloudy, quickly becomes cloudy, and sees heavy snowfall after 10am. There’s a bit of a monkey wrench in Saturday – there may be a period of rain mixed in with the snowfall between noon and 4pm. So, go ski early, just in case. The snow level will be 2000′ Saturday morning, rising to 6000′ in the afternoon and falling back to 5000′ in the evening. We’ll see 1” WV between 10am and 4pm. That may be mixed with rain, so it’s a tough call on accumulation. We’ll see another .8” WV between 4pm Saturday and 4am Sunday. Again, some of that may fall as rain, making for a difficult prediction. Let’s just say we’ll get some additional new snow Saturday and leave it at that for now. Wind Saturday will be W 40 early, SW 30 mid-morning, and WSW 50 in the afternoon.
Sunday looks colder, with the snow level at 2000′ for most of the day. We’ll get an additional 3-6” of snow. Sunday starts off really windy, but backs off in time for the lifts to run at the resorts.

Gorge Wind Forecast
Getting into the Columbia right now for windsports just isn’t a good idea. There’s a ton of debris floating around, and you are quite likely to hurt yourself. That said, the wind will be light and variable this morning with a period of gusty W 25-29 this afternoon east of The Dalles with gusty 10-13 or less in the western Gorge. Tomorrow starts off with E 20-23 and switches to gusty W 16-19 in the afternoon. Expect light westerlies, or perhaps 10-13 on Saturday.
Random Morning Thoughts
There’s a lot of research out there that shows that authoritative parenting leads to the best outcomes. Authoritative parents are warm and loving, set boundaries, and have rules. However, they do allow some flexibility, and they have open conversations about why things are they way they are, rather than simply asserting power. Authoritarian parenting, where parents assert power (the phrase “because I said so” is authoritarian), leads to worse outcomes. For example, children are more aggressive and don’t follow rules when authority figures aren’t around.
Authoritarian styles have the benefit of providing more protection in unsafe situations (violent neighborhoods, war zones, natural disasters) where time is of the essence. Authoritative styles make for happier, better-adjusted, more pro-social kids.
Looking at this research makes me think about how these styles of interaction play out in the rest of our lives. As adults, we appreciate respectful conversations that include explanations. We don’t like to be ordered around without good reason. We take orders much better, and accept situations more easily when we understand the “why” behind the “do this”.
It’s something to keep in mind if you’re in hierarchical relationships. You can have authority while still being warm, caring, supportive, and open about the reasons behind your requests and actions. Authoritative interactions will make your world flow more smoothly. Be a wise authority – be authoritative, not authoritarian. Have an awesome day!

Gorge Weather Forecast
Today, you’ll very happy to know, is much like yesterday, at least in terms of rainbows. There’s a 100% chance today – I’m staring right at a rainbow as I write this forecast. The rainbow was so spectacular that I just spent 10 minutes standing in the rain staring at it – full double rainbows are rare.
Anyway, expect a showery day today all day long with heavier rain after 4pm. Temps will be in the low 40’s this morning and in the upper 40’s this afternoon. Moderate westerlies later, 100% chance of rainbows. Tomorrow will likely start out dry, but rain returns after noon. Temps will be in the upper 30’s early and the mid 40’s in the afternoon. Light wind early, moderate late, 78% chance of rainbows. Saturday starts off dry, but it’ll be quite wet after 10am through the rest of the day. Temps will be in the upper 30’s early and the low 40’s in the afternoon. Light wind. 34% chance of rainbows. Sunday looks showery and cooler with a 79% chance of rainbows.
Looking ahead to the long-range forecast, the GFS says we go into a cold, dry period. The Euro isn’t calling for the cold, but is calling for the dry. So, we wait and see.
White Sprinter Van of the Day
Road and Mountain Biking
It’s still too wet to ride the trails, sorry. But there are fantastic gravel roads and lots of pavement. Remember, they don’t gravel the Petersburg Loop east of The Dalles, so there’s a nice gravel-free bike ride for you to enjoy, even with all the gravel on the road in the Hood River and White Salmon valleys.
