A friend of mine was talking last night about people learning meditation. (As you may have gathered, I’m a big fan of meditation!) He was talking about the simplicity of meditation practice, and how beginners in western societies often ask for detailed and complex how-to information. This brought to mind for me a training I was at last weekend. We were learning a process that’s, in essence, quite simple. In practice, it’s more difficult, and requires more intuition and flow than technique. Those things only come through practice. My fellow attendees were asking lots of questions about minutes details of the practice. Continued after the chart.

Mt. Hood Snow Forecast, continued…
Tomorrow starts off with the snow level around 5000′. It will fall to 3500′ during the day and 2000′ overnight. We’ll see light snowfall during the day, for .3-.5” WV or 3-5” of new snow. The snow will switch to flurries overnight for no accumulation. Wind tomorrow will be SW 45 early, dropping to SW 35 in the afternoon and 25 overnight.
Friday starts off with the snow level around 2500′. It will rise to 3500′ midday and fall to 3000′ overnight. We’ll receive .6” WV between 7am and 4pm, for 5-6” of new snow. Another round of precip after 4pm brings .4” water value, for another 4-5” of snow. So, total snowfall for the 24 hour period will be 9-11”. Wind Friday will be SW 30 during the day and WNW 30 overnight.

See below for details.
Saturday, much as it did yesterday, contains a bit of a question about the precip type. The snow level will be around 2500′ in the morning, rising to 5500′ in the afternoon and falling to 3000′ or less by Sunday morning. We’ll see .3” WV as snow flurries between 4am and 1pm, for 2-3” of snow. Then the snow level will rise, and we’ll see another 1-1.5” WV. It’s unclear what will happen with that at T-Line/Meadows base. Up high, that’ll be a lot of new snow. Wind on Saturday will be SW 25 early, becoming WSW 50-60 in the afternoon.
As of right now, the GFS model suggests 6-8” of snow on Sunday followed by a cooler, drier period to start next week.

Gorge Wind Forecast
Today is starting off with westerly gradients of .06 (pdx-dls) and .09 (dls-psc). On a mid-summer day, this would be a great start. We will see wind today, but high water will have pushed a ton of debris into the Columbia, making for dangerous play conditions. That said, you can expect gusty 15-18 in the western Gorge today with gusty 25-29 east of The Dalles, strongest between 10am and 2pm.
Tomorrow may start off with a quick burst of east wind as an upper level low swings up the coast. By daybreak, we’ll have light and variable wind. That will transition to gusty 13-16 in the western Gorge and gusty 25-29 east of The Dalles between 10am and 2pm. Friday starts out light and variable and picks up to gusty 23-26 late in the day, possibly after dark.
Random Morning Thoughts
There’s a lot of research out there that shows that authoritative parenting leads to the best outcomes. Authoritative parents are warm and loving, set boundaries, and have rules. However, they do allow some flexibility, and they have open conversations about why things are they way they are, rather than simply asserting power. Authoritarian parenting, where parents assert power (the phrase “because I said so” is authoritarian), leads to worse outcomes. For example, children are more aggressive and don’t follow rules when authority figures aren’t around.
Authoritarian styles have the benefit of providing more protection in unsafe situations (violent neighborhoods, war zones, natural disasters) where time is of the essence. Authoritative styles make for happier, better-adjusted, more pro-social kids.
Looking at this research makes me think about how these styles of interaction play out in the rest of our lives. As adults, we appreciate respectful conversations that include explanations. We don’t like to be ordered around without good reason. We take orders much better, and accept situations more easily when we understand the “why” behind the “do this”.
It’s something to keep in mind if you’re in hierarchical relationships. You can have authority while still being warm, caring, supportive, and open about the reasons behind your requests and actions. Authoritative interactions will make your world flow more smoothly. Be a wise authority – be authoritative, not authoritarian. Have an awesome day!

Gorge Weather Forecast
First, let’s talk about yesterday. At one point yesterday, it was 68 degrees in Hood River. Yeah, really. Someone said they saw a reading of 71 at the fire station on the Heights. That’s amazing for this time of year. That’s 20 degrees above normal. Thank you, Pineapple Express. That train’s leaving the station today, so it’s going to be cooler. Expect the temp to hover around 50 degrees all day. We’ll see showers early, plenty of sunbreaks midday, and rain after midnight. Moderate westerlies, 99% chance of rainbows.
Tomorrow starts off showery and ends up less showery as the day goes on with a chance of a fair bit of sunshine in the afternoon. Temps will be in the upper 30’s early and the mid 40’s in the afternoon. Light wind early, moderate midday. 97% chance of rainbows.
Friday looks sprinkly all day long. Temps will be in the upper 30’s early and the low 40’s in the afternoon. Light wind early, moderate late, 73% chance of rainbows. Best chance for dry weather this weekend looks to be Saturday morning. Looking out to the beginning of next week, the GFS model suggests we’ll enter into a colder period of weather, but not all the models are coming along with this.

Road and Mountain Biking
I believe those gravel roads are in great shape. Or you could try the trainer at the gym – I saw some competitive cyclists working out on spin bikes yesterday. Please leave the trails alone, and be safe on the pavement – there’s a lot of gravel and leaves out there for skinny tires.
