As of 4am today, Mt. Hood Meadows had received 3.43” of rain over the last 24 hours. That’s pretty impressive. More impressive is the maximum wind gust in the 3 o’clock hour yesterday: 141mph at the top of Cascade. Amazing. Timberline and Meadows have both chosen to remain closed today due to the weather. Mt. Hood Snow Forecast, continued…
Speaking of the weather… The snow level today will be 10,000′ all day long, a snow level more like summer than winter. After midnight, the snow level will drop to 7,000. The bulk of the rain shifts to the north this morning, leaving Mt. Hood showery, with a good chance of rainbows and sunbreaks after 10am. Heavier precipitation returns after midnight. So, Mt. Hood will receive .4” of rain this morning. Heavier precip after midnight will drop nearly 2” of water value, all of which will fall as rain. Wind today will be WSW 60-65 all day.
Tomorrow morning starts out with the snow level at 7,000′. It will drop to 4000′ midday and rise back to 6000′ after midnight. There will be a couple distinct rounds of precip tomorrow. The first will end around 10am, dropping 1-2” of snow on the tail end of Tuesday’s rain. The second round of precip will start around midnight, and will drop .8” water value (WV), most likely as rain. Wind tomorrow will be WSW 70 early, swinging to W 55 by 7am, dropping to W 35 by the afternoon, and becoming S 40 overnight.

Thursday starts off with the snow level at 6000′. We’ll see it drop to 3500′ by 7am and drop as low as 2000′ after midnight. Precip on Thursday morning starts either as rain or mixed precip and switches to snow by 7am. We’ll see .4” WV between 7am and 4pm, for 4” of new snow. That will back off to light flurries overnight. Wind Thursday will be W 40 early and SW 30-35 for the rest of the day.
Friday’s looking a little up in the air. The sounding model suggests the snow level will remain between 3000′ and 4000′ all day. The 850mb temp model suggests 34 degrees at 5000′. So… hmm… as of right now, we’re looking at 1” WV Friday, and we’re going to have to see what tomorrow’s model runs say about precip type. Saturday starts off rainy and switches to snowy. Sunday is also up in the air – it carries the potential for significant snowfall, and also, with slight shift in the storm track, for heavy rain.

Gorge Wind Forecast
We’re in an active weather pattern this week with lots of precip and fast-moving systems. That’s going to make it difficult to accurately predict the wind. Also, with inches of rain yesterday and more on the way, there will be a LOT of debris (and sewage) in the river. It’s really not the best time for windsurfing and kiting and such. That said…
Expect light west wind this morning, with squally W 20-23+ this afternoon. Tomorrow starts off with squally 20-23 in the western Gorge and gusty 26-30 in the eastern Gorge. That wind will dissipate after 1pm. Thursday looks like light westerlies in the western Gorge and gusty 23-26 east of The Dalles.
Random Morning Thoughts
There’s a lot of research out there that shows that authoritative parenting leads to the best outcomes. Authoritative parents are warm and loving, set boundaries, and have rules. However, they do allow some flexibility, and they have open conversations about why things are they way they are, rather than simply asserting power. Authoritarian parenting, where parents assert power (the phrase “because I said so” is authoritarian), leads to worse outcomes. For example, children are more aggressive and don’t follow rules when authority figures aren’t around.
Authoritarian styles have the benefit of providing more protection in unsafe situations (violent neighborhoods, war zones, natural disasters) where time is of the essence. Authoritative styles make for happier, better-adjusted, more pro-social kids.
Looking at this research makes me think about how these styles of interaction play out in the rest of our lives. As adults, we appreciate respectful conversations that include explanations. We don’t like to be ordered around without good reason. We take orders much better, and accept situations more easily when we understand the “why” behind the “do this”.
It’s something to keep in mind if you’re in hierarchical relationships. You can have authority while still being warm, caring, supportive, and open about the reasons behind your requests and actions. Authoritative interactions will make your world flow more smoothly. Be a wise authority – be authoritative, not authoritarian. Have an awesome day!

Gorge Weather Forecast
It’s cloudy and showery this morning, and not nearly as rainy as it was yesterday. As a matter of fact, we received record rainfall here in the Gorge yesterday, 2.23” in 24 hours. Wow. We also set a record high temp of 60 degrees, at least at the Hood River Weather website. And we set a record high-low this morning by 9 degrees. Hello Pineapples! In other news, I rode my bike past a big mudslide in the Goose Hollow neighborhood of Portland yesterday, so I suspect there were other mudslides. There were many, many new waterfalls and creeks flowing down the Gorge, and Multnomah Falls exit/park was closed when I drove home around 10pm last night.
In actual weather news, we’ll see off-and-on showers today with a chance of sunbreaks after 10am. Heavy rain starts up again after midnight. Temps will be unseasonably warm: low 50’s early and upper 50’s this afternoon. Moderate westerlies in the afternoon, 99% chance of rainbows.
Tomorrow starts off showery with more sunbreaks than today, goes to straight-up partly cloudy in the afternoon, and then gets increasingly rainy after midnight. Temps tomorrow will hover around 50 degrees all day. Moderate westerlies, 99% chance of rainbows.
Thursday looks mostly cloudy and showery with more sunbreaks later in the day. Temps will be in the upper 30’s early and the mid 40’s in the afternoon. Moderate westerlies, 99% chance of rainbows. Saturday and Sunday both look quite wet. I am a little concerned about the sounding profile forecast for Friday morning – it does look like there’s a chance of some snow in the Gorge. However, that feels a little unlikely to me, given the setup, but it is worth mentioning, just in case.
